  1. When they suggested that, they were probably expecting about (or even more than) 10k Rangers fans + the away support to help cover the costs.

Well, they'd still have to pay full price, but ST holders would get in for 1p! Same situation, but SPFL get less, which is always good.

    I see your point though.

  2. It would be a brilliant GIRFUY, but we're going to need to get as much money in as possible in order to even have a sniff at covering the cost of staging the home games. The policing, security, stewarding and general staffing costs are astronomical at Ibrox.

Yes, but the Board have already suggested allowing ST holders in for free, so they can obviously cover it.

  3. Understandably angry but I agree with what Martin Keown said in the article:

'Carver is out of his depth'

Former Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown on Final Score was not impressed with the Newcastle manager.

"When you're in a position like Newcastle are in, you have to stick together, but John Carver is digging players out. There was a lack of desire granted but he is out of his depth at the moment."

"It's not just about demanding the effort. He needs guidance on how to behave because he is taking players apart. Just don't say it. If he was an experienced head, a long-term manager, he wouldn't do that."

  4. 5 wins out of 11. Looked defensively strong all game. Bring McCulloch on and suddenly the defence is all over the place and he is to blame for two goals.

    1 defeat in 11!

That's my point: if a new guy comes in a draws more games than he wins for the first year, then we will all be on his back saying he's not good enough. McCall's not the answer, but he never was IMO. We must also remember he hasn't had a transfer window to make acquisitions; he's only been able to work with what he has got.

  5. Championship Players Out of Contract – Summer 2015

Here’s the final list of Championship players who’s contracts expire in the summer. There’s going to be a lot of players on this list who don’t get new deals. A few will go up to the Premier League; some will stay in the Championship but many will fall down the Divisions & some will fall out of the game. It’s going to be interesting to see which players move on as the beginning of the transfer window awaits.

    Championship Contract Expiry Summer 2015

Ooh, it's like a buffet. Few good players there.

    Nile Ranger? C'mon...

  6. Nobody can be judged over a short run of games, his job was to get promotion via play offs.

But what is going against him is his lack of tactical knowledge and inability to make big decisions like dropping players. His previous CV doesnt do him any favours either.

The ambition has to be a far more proven manager who will excite the club / fans and put a bit of worry in the others. It needs to make a statement that we are on the way back to the top. Likes of McCall and Billy Davies will just waste a few years by maybe a run of 2nd place finishes while that and allow Celtic to win a few more titles.

It was good to hear Butcher got the Newport job yesterday so he would be out of the running. It shows none of the teams in Englands top 2 tiers fancied him.

The problem is that a 'proven' manager -- that we could realistically get -- would be of a certain type; old school. I think we need to go young and more technical and coach-like. (With a DoF, but I'll leave that for now because we're talking about 'managers'.)

  7. If we have to play McCulloch anywhere, he would probably best be played wide left, in his original position. He offered nothing then and offers much less than that now. Our wide players contribute nothing as it is so at least he would be out of harm's way. The main downside is our side would end up booting long diagonals to him all game, which he would inevitably fail to win, just like when he joined.

I'm not sure if I'm being serious or not. I think he would offer as much as the likes of Smith and Aird, i.e. absolutely nothing.

    The Blue Fellaini!

He's too slow to play wide (or centre-back for that matter!) -- put him up front.

  8. He was an easy fit at the time. He has done OK, but I still think we have better players than our position suggests, so in that regard he's hardly been a success.

However, for the long-term we need a complete overhaul, and I hope the Board get someone progressive to do it -- not the same old types.

I get frustrated when people say it's too late to change. We may have missed an opportunity 2 years ago, but it's never too late to instigate a change in the way we do things. I hope we get a statement of intent from the Board when King gets the ok (?).

  9. Agree to take 50% before costs are taken off is robbery. I hope Motherwell Hibs and Rangers refuse to accept this. Let Queens go up if necessary. What I don't understand is what did these teams vote for at the acceptance meeting.

It's the 50% of turnover that really sticks in the throat. Set ticket prices at £1 -- They'd still get their money, but it'd be next to nothing.

  10. What do the SPFL exactly say on the matter? Is it just that ST holders can't be let in for free? If so could we not just let them in for a quid?

It'd cost us, but it could cost us anyway. It appears as though the board have budgeted free entry anyway. It's all about getting one over the SPFL.

  11. We've got Hardie, Clark and Miller, though the latter two are very much the same type of roving-all-over-the-place strikers. Hardie is more direct and should play no matter what, Gallagher probably remains outside the radar right now. Given that McCulloch is less mobile and sure a presence, you would expect him to stay up front and in or close to the area, which would be "a bonus". We haven't seen him up front for ages though, nearly two years now. 10 mins against Falkirk is sure no indication how he would perform away from home and at Tynecastle.

Generally, I'd rather use Mohsni up there than McCulloch. More presence, can play football, is IMHO a greater threat in the opposition box and a better target man than any of the rest. I do asume that McCall will go 5-4-1 or 5-3-3 at Tynecastle though, and McCulloch retaining his place with McGregor to his right and Zaliukas to the left. It worked before.

A 5-3-3 looks like it would be tactically beneficial with that extra man!

  12. The Tories are currently showing a lot of anit-Scottish feeling, and being incredibly insulting to us. Why would a Scotsman vote for them? Luckily, most Scots are wise enough not to. I imagine those that do must generally be high earners who want to avoid more tax and public spending on those less well off. They put their money before their country.

    Sarcasm? Subjectivity?

    You're calling Conservative voters stupid?

(This thread is going to have to be moved: it's turning into another political debate!)

Edit: I actually feel the same about SNP voters, in the sense I hope Scots are wise enough to see through their rhetoric and propaganda. Who's right I wonder? Or are we both unduly subjective?

  13. I think we all agree that he is not the finished article. I worry that after only 50+ games we are quite dogmatic in our condemnation. The lad has certain qualities, can we not use them? He's quick, so when we need a goal or some pace in the latter stages could he not play a role? Not all youngsters are going to be like Mcleod, but they all have certain qualities that we can use. Moreover, he is 20! His career has not even started, but we've deemed him not good enough? He can still be developed, and that's what I hope the youth coaches are able to do.

I thought we all wanted our youth players to get a chance? A couple of seasons in 3rd and 2nd division games is not a real chance. Just because he has disappointed this season does not mean he is finished. We need to develop players properly; and use their strengths.

  14. I'm not sure whether he really ever was "that much" fitter. These new close-fitting jerseys just reveal more of the players. Now, sarcasm aside, he could well have had 20 goals this season, if for an utter lack of finishing power, luck and touch. If go back and watch the highlights, he was always there or thereabouts, hitting man, wood, metal or keepers, rather than the net. He never was the all-out marauding and running striker, but the clinical finisher in the box. Every video will reveal that. For whatever reason, he lost his touch this season and that is essentially the coup de grace for a striker's career.

On the other hand, as I pointed out after our last game, we sorely miss(ed) a decent poacher and penalty-area type of chap, as Clark, Miller and Co. are running all over the place, but 5 out of 10 times when a ball comes into the danger area, Clark or Miller (much like Little was, BTW) are somewhere else. A Daly, Boyd, Hateley, McCoist type of player would remain in the middle. Hardie changed that somewhat, but we sure need to adress that.

You've summed him up perfectly. He does require service; and the right type of service at that. His touch has always been poor, but his finishing has deteriorated; whether that is down to the type of service or age, I couldn't speculate.

    I'd keep him.

  15. It's not only out of date, it's prehistoric. The Scottish national team (apart from a recent up turn) and Scottish clubs get horsed on the big stage because we have an ignorant mindset towards modern football. Our techniques and philosophy are about 30 years out of date.

This applies to the British game as a whole, English football has so much money though that the foreign players and coaches will keep their game relatively modern at club level.

Agreed. I think the fans have to take some of the blame. We have not given players the time in the past. hopefully it's changing now though. Scotland in general is living in the past.

What's the answer? Cathro? (Not him as such, but that type.)
