For whatever reasons, it was fairly plain that Pena wasn't for applying himself or particularly interested in doing a professional job with Rangers.

Facts prior to him joining were that he had been good enough to play for Mexico and that in more recent times had had issues outwith the game that might have been a factor in a sustained lack of form.

The signing was a distinct gamble. Pedro Caixinha was to be the man who was to get Pena back to playing the way he had been when capped by Mexico. If he did, we'd win a watch and have an excellent midfield bargain with sell-on value....The real gamble had been Pedro Caixinha.

What we got was a Pena who wasn't particularly interested or bothered in applying himself.

Caixinha left and the writing was on the wall and if there was any doubt about his attitude, we got yesterdays video tweet

I saw nothing to suggest he "wasn't for applying himself", or "wasn't particularly interested or bothered in applying himself". I saw him laughing and joking, fitting in with teammates in training, and working hard on the pitch. He's lost his touch, though; his control is terrible; and not the quickest. As TB said, his goals-to-games ratio is superb, and his knack of finding space is second-to-none.

And 'short-gate' ( :D ) is just a made-up story; nothing in it at-all. It took me several views to see what people we up in arms about.

Time will tell how positive it may be but at least we appear to be seeing the ongoing re-construction of the football operation and we have to presume that the DoF is playing a major role in this.

A "major role"? That's his job (the football operation).

Some will no doubt be suggesting that recent coaching recruitments are "jobs for the boys" as has been suggested in the past.  However, if you look at the appointments of Vignal, Lovenkrands and Thomson they all have their coaching badges.  Not sure about Vignal but Lovenkrands and Thomson both have their A licences which actually makes them more qualified than the vast majority of coaches within the Academy of both us AND Celtic.

Seems to me that the Club are, rightly, starting to follow the Spanish route whereby the best, most qualified coaches (A license and pro license) are the ones entrusted to develop the children - the vast majority of A license coaches in Spain coach the kids whereas in the UK the vast majority of A license coaches actually coach the adults which, in my opinion, is virtually pointless - too late by that point in time to "teach old dogs new tricks".  Get the best coaches teaching the kids the proper techniques and develop them into how to understand the game and do the basics perfectly.

You need those characters, the ones that know what it takes to succeed as footballers and as Rangers players; this is a good move.

Interestingly, the article suggests we're looking to implement a hybrid approach, whereby experts and ex-players work together to give us the best of both worlds:

    Quote

“All top clubs in Europe were recently asked by the European Clubs’ Association if their Academy coach recruitment policy focussed solely on ex-players, as the likes of Ajax do. Or did we employ teachers and academics as the majority of the best clubs in the likes of Belgium and France do very successfully?

“My belief is in a hybrid of both. We need coaches who are experts at understanding how young people learn and have a unique skill set for developing kids of a specific age, combined with ex-players who can pass on a wealth of knowledge from playing at this club and at Champions League level.

    Same issue on IE.

Seems to be the size of the sticky note - you can't scroll up to the top of it to click on the X to close, which  I was able to do to the sticky note that showed up when I initially landed on the new forum page, pre-login.

I sent myself one: I can remove it by clicking the dismiss 'x' at the top right.

    Maybe @Frankie can help?

The problem I have is how to cancel a post once you have decided not to post it. That was the reason I (unwillingly) deleted the Florida thread yesterday. In the old site there were 3 options before posting.

Post quick reply, Go advanced or cancel. I see how to go advanced but I can't see a way to just cancel the post.

    Click "Cancel"...?

Oh, I see: I just delete what I've written, then leave it. There's only a cancel button when you want to edit.

Hah, either that or 'fools seldom differ'!

Rousseau, don't be surprised if Pena is quite keen on a return to Mexico. Whatever his goal to game ration is he's struggled to find a regular starting place, we've struggled to understand and adapt to his 'game' and with Pedro gone his chief supporter has gone. Murty has used him, and used him well at times, but this might be a mutual thing rather than us simply looking to offload him. Pena's biggest problem is one of expectation. The fee paid for him and the stories that followed him created the impression that he was going to be a big, big player. That's not his fault of course. On balance moving him on seems like the wisest course to me.

Yes, his main reason for coming is gone, so I wouldn't be surprised; which is understandable. If we're recouping the money it's not a bad idea to move him on.

(It's most definitely 'fools seldom differ'... :ninja::D)

  7. Pena wasn't the all-round midfielder we were expecting, but I really don't see how he was a "flop"; his goal-to-game ratio is superb, and his ability to find space in the box likewise. The narrative is quite clear.

I'd rather keep Pena. However, if we're able to recoup the money and put it into a better all-rounder, then so be it.
