The thought ran through my mind but I'm not sure he could hack it if things got a little difficult.

At St.Mirren when it wasn't going well he ended up in the stands arguing/conversing with supporters who were giving him stick, ie. multiply the scrutiny/demands and divide the level of patience and you have to ask if he could keep a level head and do his job.

I get the appointment of a younger promising manager (back in the day St.Mirren had one called Alex Ferguson) but I'm not seeing one that fits the bill in Scotland. Styles have changed and a Fergie like manager is old hat, perhaps Alex Neill is the closest younger Scottish manager at present.

Yes, that's an issue. As is the fact that he's on'y managed in the Championship thus far. Can he make the step up?

Alex Neil is probably the best young Scottish manager at the moment, but he's (a) not too different from what the rest do and (b) probably out of our reach, being a success in the English Championship is a good stage.

    None really stand out.

I watched a video about Guardiola's early managerial apprenticeship, and nothing really compares here -- he's choosing clubs in Italy and Mexico to work with managers and learn their methods. We're rather close-minded when it comes to this stuff.

  2. That's a good solid move from Bayern; they're not scrambling to appoint some 'big name', or someone based on a dated record, merely a promising coach who's been doing a very good job at Frankfurt (they play some nice stuff).

That's what we should be doing, but there's just no real talent in Scotland; every team plays the same sort of way, and no one is tactically progressive.

Jack Ross is probably one of the more promising, but he's not wildly different from the rest.

Before anyone says 'Silva???' I'm thinking of his record at Olympiacos in a league similar to ours which is mainly dominated by two teams. Albeit AEK are the current champions for the first time in twenty odd seasons.

He wouldn't be my first choice - just trying to gauge opinion on him.

Very good manager, but I think he's out of our league.

    He's also a bit of a mercenary.

    Here is something radical:

    Foderingham

    Martin -  Alves -  McCrorie

    Tavernier - Halliday - Docherty - Dorrans - John

    Candieas

    Morelos

    Radical?

    Hold my beer.

    Foderingham

    McCrorie - Alves - Wallace

    Goss

    Tavernier - Docherty - Dorrans

    Candeias - Morelos - Murphy

Think Man City. Tavernier/Candeias and Dorrans/Murphy interchanging in the half-space and wing. Tavernier can drop back to make a 4-3-3. Goss like Fernandinho, and Docherty moving about to create overloads like De Bruyne.

    Pointless, but fun. :D

    I can dream...

Holt has played in the two draws at Parkhead and the SC semi-final in 2016, so he has it in him to do a job and he is one of the few in our squad who know what it is to put Celtic out of the Cup. I think mentality and belief will be important, we need players who genuinely believe we'll go out and win, Miller is one of those types,...and another with experience of beating them many times.

Take off your rose tinted glasses wrt to Docherty. He is a work-in-progress and has a lot of improving to do and experience to gain.

When he develops into a better decision-maker, he'll become more (net) effective.

No matter how much belief Holt has, he still gets out-muscled too easily for this game. Like I said, I like Holt, a lot; he's got good technique, he tries, he brings great energy etc. However, so does Docherty -- perhaps with less technique, but that'll not be needed in this game -- but with that added physique. I don't think it's "rose tinted" to say that. Holt's experience is the only issue.

Miller over Candeias is mental to me. I'll never agree with that.

    Tav, Martin, Alves, John.

The last bastion of the defence. I’m sorry for the ‘keeper. But I suppose there’s nobody else so I’d put McRorie into the back line and put Alves on the ‘plane to Madrid.

McCrorie in front on Alves works well, though.

Alves was probably best when McCrorie was in front, doing the running, allowing Alves to cover and 'blooter' headers back up the pitch.

    It's a team for a specific game.

I think Holt has shown he can do a job in these type of games and whilst Docherty has more of a future, he has a tendency to lose the ball far too often, often undoing the good work of winning it in the first place.

Miller is a player who can hurt Celtic. His mentality for these types of games tends to be spot-on and he has a game and a goal under his belt from last weekend. It's tough on Candeias but it's a formation thing and Tav is a very good outlet to have on the right.

I like Holt, but I've lost count the number of times he gets pushed off the ball against them; he just doesn't have the strength.

I don't agree with Miller over Candeias: Candeias is just superior in every way, even against them -- he dominated Tierney in the last game, so we can't omit him.

  8. I think Ian has a good team there. The 4-1-4-1 looks solid, if we play it tight -- and Murty usually does against them, to be fair.

    Foderingham

    Tavernier - Martin - Alves - John

    Goss

    Candeias - Docherty - McCrorie - Murphy

    Morelos

I like Goss' control, but he's not a presser; more a sitter, covering passing lanes. He's a decent sitter, but will need energy in front of him, which McCrorie and Docherty have in abundance.

Dorrans might be a more solid option, though; in which case, McCrorie would play DM and Dorrans further forward (Ian's team):

    Foderingham

    Tavernier - Martin - Alves - John

    McCrorie

    Candeias - Docherty - Dorrans - Murphy

    Morelos

How can you go for Holt over Docherty, and Miller over Candeias?!?!

An idealistic approach possibly can work but it's too big a risk and it's not what we need right now. A pragmatic approach doesn't need to be limited to these two.

His inability to change sounds like Warburton. Plus I want a manager who can come up with tactics based on the players he has and not force players into a style that's not natural to them just because it's sexy.

Yes, I'm not convinced by FdB; he's too steeped in Ajax, that he's not got that ability to change things too much.

My heart says idealist, my head says pragmatist.

We need a safe, less of a gamble appointment.

Although any appointment is a gamble, I'm not sure that an idealistic manager like FdB is what we need right now. We've had that with Warburton and Pedro to a lesser extent. I believe that we need a more pragmatic manager

I agree, but I can't help feel deflated at that.

A part of me still thinks an idealistic approach can work. And, I do worry that a pragmatic manager won't better Rodgers -- McInnes has an awful record, Clarke's a bit better.

Dundee United are a ship without a rudder and it's those type of situations at clubs that can mean they go downhill quickly.

Kilmarnock weren't on a disimilar path until people with competence and substance got a hold of the club.

  13. Three in the middle would probably help, but we still should be better with the two. Virtually every side in Europe played a 4-2-3-1, with a double-pivot, but none get opened up the way we do. It's brutal.

Closing the distance between the two wingers would help. Guardiola likes wide wingers to hug the touchline, but only at one side; our wingers are out of the game, isolated.

Another simple thing would be to close the gap between the CB and Morelos; it's massive at times. Any pressing on the defensive transition takes too long as players are too far away from each other. Dundee were running at our box before our players noticed!

Three in the middle would perhaps help, but it goes deeper; the spacing, and structure of the team is not good enough. I can't help but feel even with three we'd still be chasing opposition players who've broken through our lines.

Ah, Ok, sorry - I was going for the general mood too.  I can't see it so just following on text. I found the hatred (and it was hatred) directed by some on FF to be OTT and as baffling as the adoration of Cummings.  Who may one day develop into a good player, and may even grow up (somewhat less likely) but why he is adored and Miller despised is hard to fathom.

Aye, but Cummings has got that funny tattoo, and he's a really nice guy...

You and thousands of others, to be fair.  I'm not quite sure what folk who sneer at Miller think we've got in our squad that makes him such a "poor choice".

Anyway, we lead and other scores are currently going our way.

To be honest, I wasn't saying that; I was trying to capture the general mood. I like to see how players do first.

I'd rather not play Miller, but like I posted above, I understand why he's playing in that position; there's no one else that naturally fits.
