We are being told DoFs recruit, a fancy word for sign, when there is no manager in place.

Once again what if incoming managers do not like the players recruited/signed by any DoF, when there was no manager in place.

I do not believe for one moment DoFs sign anyone, advise on logistics yes, sign no.

I think you need to read up on it.

Agree with this but remember Allen said the manager determines selection and tactics. He also has a say in signings. I guess that means that overall he needs to fit within a style of play but can adjust if necessary but he cannot go out and spend £12m on Tore Andre Flo for example if that style of player cannot play within the overall philosophy. It makes sense and also suggests Allen / DoF has a firm hand on the purse strings.

Bearing all that in mind and given the DoF has a big say in the next manager perhaps our future criticism / plaudits will be as much towards the DoF. For example if he presents a bunch of diddies to the manager then the managers job becomes more difficult. But if his players are of good calibre and understand the playing style and philosophy and by extension the tactical requirements then it is very much the manager who takes the flack.  All in all I like the model and if it had been in place would have prevented the PC mistakes. Allen would know the market of players who could be recruited for the kind of money we have wasted on Pena.

You also have to consider Murty and the fact that he has not fully operated within this model for Rangers as it is probably in development (we haven’t worked like this before).

Thats my positive spin on the sutuation anyway. I am pretty sure we don’t need to clear an entire squad out.

We'd need to judge the recruitment alongside the performances on the pitch going forward.

Murty is not a good manger either.

You could argue our recruitment has been good, but the manager has not been able to do his side of things.

Germany isn't just a big team though.

They are a formidable and mentally strong group of world class proven winners backed up by a fantastic youth system. Not to mention an amazing tradition and consistency of success over many decades.

There are very few 'big teams' that can boast the same.

'Big team', great players doesn't guarantee success.

His tactical innovations has taken them to a new level.

I'm not discussing this any more; it was an aside. We'll just agree to disagree.

Obviously he deserves a lot of credit but the quality coming through in Germany is outstanding and alongside their mental capacity means that you'd have to be a numpty not to do well in tournament football.

He was lucky wrt timing as well and got the job after a relative lean spell was coming to an end.

He was involved in the turnaround, wrt to the behind-the-scenes development of young players; it's one of the reasons why he was appointed.

I don't get this need to dismiss a manager's record, or performance, as nothing special simply because he's at a big team.

Anyway, this is not the point of the thread. I only mentioned him because he exemplifies the 'right man for the job' idea.

If he's underperforming, he'll get stick. And currently he is.

Subjective. The stats show he's one of our best contributors to goals, whether that's scoring them, assisting them, or being involved in the build-up.

I don't mind dropping him for a rest, or to suit the tactical plan etc., but I have no time for some of the criticism bandied about.

At this point in time, I don't think managing Germany is the most difficult job in the world and the fact he seems quite happy there and as yet not willing to go into club football is I think a wise decision by him.

Conversly, managing say Brazil, England, Italy, Holland, Scotland is much more of a challenge.

No way can you say that. He's transformed them. There was a period of 10 years where they were garbage.

If it's the right man anyone one of those teams will be successful -- maybe not Scotland... -- and conversely, the wrong man will have them languishing.

Think you meant inexperience should not rule anyone out! MW only had Brentford, true. Low had better raw material than we have currently. Whoever takes over will need assurances about a transfer kitty; Mourinho wouldn't be able to do anything with us right now.

    Yes, my mistake.

Low does have an ok group of players.

Mourinho wouldn't, but Guardiola would! :D

Warburton was an "interesting" appointment & got a lot of folk excited due to what he had done down south.

We definitely need more of a "known" entity - someone to rival Brenda.  the need to make an immediate impact on the team & instill a real consistency from one game to the next.

I was listening to part of Clyde SSB last night & the asked a Gers-caller if Sundays win offered a confidence boost ahead of the Old firm game.  My initial though was no....our form in general has been so inconsistent we can go from a great game one week, to absolute dross the next.  Any new manager MUST address that as a priority.

Yes, we weren't that good against Hearts; they made us look good. Nothings really changed.

Potter would be an interesting appointment but tbh, we don't really want 'interesting' at this point in time.

We need pragmatic, respected and a level of experience that relates to the job at hand.

From a certain point of view, one could argue that Potter is pragmatic, respected and has experience over a number of years.

The issue is perhaps the level of that experience.

Defeating Voldemort is no small achievement...  *gets coat*

Experience maybe an issue, but it shouldn't rule anyone out if they are the right candidate -- I'm repeating myself, but Joachim Low.

The Potter-Reid axis is eerily similar to the Warburton-Weir one: inexperienced Englishman plus Scots assistant. So I dunno either.

Maybe, but Potter has been successful over a longer term, albeit in the Swedish lower leagues.

Experience should rule anyone out, as long as they're the right candidate. Joachim Low was a nobody before taking Germany to new heights (relatively speaking!).

But the club needs to develop a workable strategy with the assistance of a Manager/Coach.  To date, we haven't had a manager who has been able to implement a consistent & sustainable strategy/philosophy.

The DoF should be doing that. Then any manager should be scouted to meet those needs and philosophy.

Southampton keep a black box on managers that they want to, or could, continue their style and philosophy. The managers fit into the club's philosophy.

I have watched alot about him. I am honestly not sure, my mind keeps changing (as it does with de Boer)

I like he is a modern manager.

I like he has had the balls to leave England and make a name for himself.

I like he has had success. Heard what he has done being compared to taking Stenhousemuir from League Two to Europa League.

He has Billy Reid as his assistant which could help in Scotland too.

At the same time I see him and his players rehersing for plays in the town hall and thinking he will be treated as a joke from day one by the media here.

    I just don’t know ?

There are negatives -- although your's is just local culture I presume, so he'll not be doing that here!

It's a big step up for him. It's a good step for him.

For us, maybe too much of a gamble? Again...

Not sure what Murty's problem with the Portuguese defenders is, but neither was even on the bench last Sunday. In fact, no substitute centre-half was. Murty said nothing about injuries either.

IMHO, we won't see them next Sunday, it will the same back-4, in front of them probably Holt, Docherty, and Dorrans. Cummings will be left alone up front, Murphy probably on the left wing, Candeias on the bench and Windass get his usual starting slot ...

Great! He's our best player. :ninja:

If Alves scores against them on Sunday, he'll be better than Hill :P

    Until then...

That does not make sense. Especially when they are defenders.

Hill has been in teams that conceded 8 goals against Celtic (13 if you include the game he was on the bench), whereas Alves has been in teams that conceded 5. Both have gained 1 point.

    I REST MY CASE!! :D

  16. How long has Allan got left on his Celtic deal? I'd still take him: he's near the top of most creativity stats; he's the natural #10 that we're crying out for.

I'd also take Dundee's Aurtinxatse (sp? whatever) and Kamara. Again, they do very well in the stat department.

    Yes, Birmingham.

    He's hardly thriving either...

I'll worry about new players when we see who will be coaching them next season. Knowing Rangers, the new manager will probably be the last to arrive.

While that is certainly not an agreeable situation, our DoF should mitigate those issues somewhat.
