Game specific formation and tactics is something there hasn’t been enough of since we got promoted and it’s cost us dearly repeatedly. One size doesn’t fit all and a good manager sees that before and/or during a game. I think when everyone is fit we have the players to switch between 4–2-3-1/4-3-3 and 4-4-2 depending on the game.

I doubt very much Gerrard is ready to switch from the current set up but I think it’s just not working with the midfielders currently available and Lafferty has far more to offer than some of them.

The midfield, but also the front line doesn't work yet, but...

    I agree.

    Very much so.

To continue in what obviously wasn't and hasn't worked in many such games would be the equivalent of :brick:

Do we start that way against Hibs if the midfield options are bereft of creativity ?

Quick word on Lafferty. The gods have of late have certainly been against him getting on the scoresheet.

Pardon my gloating I just had to make the most of it. For me it’s as much about the players at our disposal as the formation per se. We’re more likely to score with Lafferty on the park in Coulibaly’s place. But due to the lack of creativity across the midfield I think we’re also currently more likely to score with two men on the oppositions centre backs than just an outnumbered Morelos.

That's not a failure creativity -- although we were short in that area -- that's just a failure of proper offensive structure.

Sure, more strikers on the pitch, more chance of scoring. It's not universal, but yes, I can go along with that.

4-4-2 is not needed for that. Like I said, I felt they were making the runs that they should be making in the 4-3-3.

However, we're getting ahead of ourselves; this was game specific. If we can do it from the start, and win, then I'm all for it.

  4. The Irony for me, was that the runs Candeias and Lafferty were making in the 4-4-2 were the same runs they should be making in the 4-3-3, if they're the wide men.

I'm not convinced the 4-4-2 is the way to go, but we played it well, and more importantly for me, there was a good positional structure to it.

We were susceptible on the counter, but we were pretty gung-ho at that point.

McGregor arfield Morelos are my top 3

tav goldson barisic katic arfield dorrans murphy kent morelos Middleton are all players I like a lot

fod mcaulay halliday coulibaly mccrorie jack rossiter lafferty candieas Grezda have all done ok but I don’t think are as good as the first lot

flanagan worrell can both leave anytime they like and wouldn’t be missed

might have missed some but that’s all I can think of at this time of night! What would your list look like by comparison @Rousseau?

I agree with all of that -- although I'd move Jack up to the 'players I like a lot' section, and move Katic down.

I'm surprised I agree with you... I must be maturing.

Hopefully this Gif makes up for it:

Think I’m definitely in the minority on this one!

He is not anywhere near the Kenny Miller level of annoyance as I like Ryan Jack, I just don’t think he is as good as everyone raves about him.

i have watched him quite closely in recent games as guys on the bus, on here etc are saying he was great and I didn’t notice anything decent from him, and I remain to be convinced he is anything more than bang average, or any better than McCrorie or Coulibaly in that defensive holding role.

i don’t sigh when I see he is in the team like I did with Miller! He will do as decent a job as anyone else in that role, I just have never noticed anything outstanding or MOTM about him.

Like others have said and as I said in my previous post, if SG thinks he is worthy of a new deal, that’s fine by me, I’m just not going to be over-excited about it, but not annoyed either.

I think Jack is a good player, and is most certainly better than McCrorie and Coulibaly, but fair enough.

I'm curious, though, out of our current players, who you think is good?

  7. Solskjaer remains Molde boss -- while the Norwegian season has ended, it starts in April, so I wonder how they'll resolve that?

He brings Mike Phelan with him; I can see them steadying the ship, and bringing an upturn in results, but they're not getting top 4.
