As much I believe we had to move on from Candeias he’s a much better attacking midfielder than Jones. It’s understandable that there is hype over a new signing but Jones is an average attacking mid. He’s all about pace, “directness” and going down easily to win free kicks and penalties.

What's the split between goals and assists?

Also where do you get those figures?

GS stated going from Candeias + Kent to Ojo + Jones is "a huge step backwards". I merely suggested, providing some data, that I think it could be a step forward. Mainly because we may get more of an end-product from these guys. (And, I was only talking offensively; defensively, Candeias light years ahead, IMO.)

I liked both Kent and Candeias -- Candeias I love to bits -- but you can't deny they don't quite provide the end-product that they should, and that we need. Admittedly, that doesn't mean to say Ojo and Jones will; I'm looking for the positive.

Ultimately, I wouldn't sell Candeias. He's started pre-season very well. If he keeps it up, he's a real asset.

I do think our fans are overestimating Jones. Doesn’t suit our formation and is a less good version of Kent who I didn’t even like. Like Kent he’s good at winning free kicks, goes down easily.

I do agree with that. I think Kent is a better player, but I do have a feeling we may get more end-product out of him. That's based on optimism!

No idea how you can say that about ojo and Jones has 11 goals in his life by the age of 24 so that's patent nonsense.

Kent didn't have enough of an end-product, for me. Ojo has one goal in one, with a similar ability with the ball.

Re Jones and Candeias, I admit it's a projection, but Candeias had 5 goals and 5 assists in the League last season playing for the top scorers in the league, whereas Jones has 4 goals and 4 assists playing for a side that scores bugger all. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say he may be better offensively. He may not be.

If you're going to bring their total career stats into it, Jones has 45 goals + assists in 193 games ( contributing 0.23 goals per game), whereas Candeias has 96 goals + assists in 384 games (contributing 0.25 goals per game). Candeias is 7 years older.

It's just my opinion. I still love Candeias to bits.

We hardly ever played 4-4-2 ever since Warburton. But do try and list all of our players in a 4-3-3 and the post will be stretched like there is no tomorrow :smokin:

As for Candeias, lets wait for one of our more informed guys here.

I did it with primary positions:

    (GK) McGregor | Foderingham

(RB) Tavernier | Flanagan | Polster - (RCB) Goldson | Edmundson - (LCB) Katic | Helander - (LB) Barasic | Halliday

    (DM) Davis | McCrorie*

(RCM) Docherty | Jack - (LCM) Aribo | Kamara

    (RF/RAM) Arfield | Candeias | Hastie - (LF/LAM) Ojo | Stewart | Jones | Murphy

    (ST) Morelos | Defoe

A majority of yesterday's game was 4-3-3, rather than 4-3-2-1.

It's really swapping Kent for Jones and Candeias for Ojo. Based on performances so far, there's an argument to say Ojo is an upgrade, but I'd much prefer Kent to Jones.

My point was based on the 4-3 part. The front three doesn't matter. (Yes, you're right: it was, and it will fluctuate all season.) The RCM and LCM is the positions that will aim to cover the FBs.

Are you talking about the positions? I was talking about swapping our loan (Kent for Ojo) and our permanent (Candeias for Jones).

I would prefer Kent for Jones. I don't agree that's the swap, though.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching that.  This quality of football (notwithstanding the quality of opposition) is a joy to watch.

Stewart, Pollster, Halliday, Edmundson and Docherty have all made a claim for a starting role with that performance.

There were too many instances in the first half when I thought, 'Mmm... Polster's not doing it for me here': Wayward crosses or misplaced passes, getting caught on the ball, being indecisive etc.

And then in the second half I thought he was brilliant! He has a wonderful cross on him!

Hastie tried too hard, as you said. Still raw, but he looks like he has something about him. He is only 20!

Stewart was class; Halliday worked his socks off, and was unlucky not to have a hat-trick himself (!); Edmundson was cool and composed; and Docherty was phenomenal, covering every blade of grass.

Swapping Kent and candeias for ojo and Jones is not a step in the right direction though. It's a huge step back.

Swapping Kent for Ojo is a step forward. IMO.

Jones for Candeias is better offensively, but a step back defensively. I don't think that defensive aspect is required with our formation, however.

If Candeias leaves we’ll need to come up with some other way of covering for Tavernier’s forays forward. Because Candeias’ work rate has been missed whenever he’s been left out.

I don't think we need to rely on a single player to cover. The 4-3-2-1 is set up to allow our FBs to play high and wide. Yesterday Polster and Halliday spent most of the game on the opponents byline, because they have Aribo and Docherty to cover--the latter, I may add, was phenomenal at covering yesterday.

  9. Ooh, yes! Now my mind is going through possible back-three line-ups.

Did he say 3-5-2 specifically, or merely back-three? If it's the latter, I think he'd want to keep that narrow front three.

    McGregor

    Goldson - Katic - Helander

    Tavernier - Kamara - Aribo - Barasic

    Arfield - Ojo

    Morelos
