  3. Bale's a good signing, but I don't see it improving Spurs, in terms of league placement. Mourinho could fill his team with Ronaldo and Messi but it would still be bland, counter-attacking football. It looks like they could play a 3-4-3 with their players, and the starting line-up does look tasty. It remains to be seen if Bale -- or more accurately, Mourinho -- can make the difference, though.

I think Thiago is the pick of the signings, thus far. Phenomenal player that gives Liverpool something different. They have quite a workman-like midfield, but Thiago brings a touch of class.

I see Liverpool are after Diogo Jota from Wolves too, who would fit in nicely.

  4. Strange one: either 1 point for the Correct Result, or 5 points for the Correct Scores.  No one had Tavernier as FGS.

  5. I'm surprised by the praise for Adam.

From what I remember, the majority could only criticise him at the time.

He was never utilised properly with us. It was only when he dropped into a deeper, central role, and where the team was built around him, that he was able to show his qualities.

  6. I'll reserve judgement until I see them tonight, and when they get all their new signings back fit, but I don't see it with Chelsea.

They've strengthened on paper, but I don't rate Lampard, just yet. You can sign all the best players in the world and cobble them together into a team, but it doesn't then translate into improvement or success.

I do think, in this country, we're to preoccupied with bringing in newer, better players to generate that improvement, rather than relying on the coaches to improve what's there and how they play.

Arteta's -- too early to say transformed, but -- improved a rubbish Arsenal side, not by making big signings but by implementing his ideas on their style of play.

Gary Neville has a bad habit of saying Man Utd just need a couple of big signings and they'll be up there challenging for the League. Nonsense. They'll get closer, but they need more than that.

Yeh it is a bit strange. I was hoping we’d be signing a player to go straight into the first team. Gardiner is 28 in a few weeks and the fact he is still at Preston suggests he will be coming in to be a rotation player. We’ve signed a 28 year old from Preston before, a hero with their fans, and he was a Preston level player. Having said that, Gardiner does seem to have some attributes that we could do with. From what I have read and seen, he is a player who is mainly about his passing and vision and creativity in general, he isn’t fast and isn’t one to be taking men on very much. He would play in our midfield 3 and not as one of the number 10s. If that description is correct I think be a really useful player to have for games where we are trying to break a team down, even if it is a hugely exciting signing.

    Who's Gardiner?

Watched his youtube vignette and whilst I am always very dubious of those (thanks Sebo....) this boy looks like a player

Strange-- I wasn't convinced after watching the above clip: he looked slight, and only scored penalties or scuffed shots.

I've now watched more clips and I think he looks better. He still looks quite slight -- I wonder how he'd cope with our League's physicality -- but has a bit of pace about him, and he likes to get into the box and/or take shots from distance. Maybe not a creative player, but one that likes to get on the end of things.

Not a bad option to have.
