The comparison is still just unfair, so I don't like it. The vast majority of Ally's European appearances were against champions. He played against the champions of Italy, Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, England, Russia, Belgium etc, and as we know Rangers badly struggled to challenge those sides. Unlike today, our managers just couldn't crack Europe, and part of that was probably just that opposition were the cream of each country and just stronger than we face in the Europa League today.

That is not a slight on Alfie's European record for one second. 6 of his goals have been against Gibraltan part timers but the rest have been very valuable goals against good teams. I just don't see the value in comparing it to a different time when we played in very different competition.

If we compare the goals scored in the group stages/proper rounds (excluding qualifiers) and where those teams finished in their leagues:

    McCoist:
    CL: 4 goals - Leeds (C), Grasshoppers (C)
    EL: 3 goals - Bohemians (-), Ives (-), Boavista (5)

    Morelos:
    EL: 9 goals - Rapid Vienna (2), Porto (C), Young Boys (C), Feyenoord (3), Lech Poznan (2).

    Morelos shades it, for me.

The Europa League definitely looks a more difficult prospect now - McCoist was playing against sides from Ireland and Finland!

  2. I thought the issue last night in that first half was the poor press.

We clearly wanted to let them play from the back, as they were supposedly poor playing out.

The problem was it was only the front three that pressed; the midfield didn't, so they were able to pass through the press.

Second half we utilised a mid block, which worked better.

  3. Most were expecting more goals from us, so the majority only picked up 1 point for this round.

Correct Result (1 pt): Everyone who entered.

Correct Number of Rangers Goals (1pt): Rousseau, Bill, gaspard and Devil.

FGS (2 pts): gs, WB91, Franc and Bill.

Correct Score (3 pts): Rousseau, Bill, gaspard and Devil.

@Bill collects the full 7 points for the round!

  4. Hamilton has certainly had the best car over the last few years -- same with Schumacher -- but I think he's certainly the best driver of his generation.

Damon Hill made the point that it's too difficult to compare drivers of different eras, because the cars and circumstances are too different.

I don’t know what more Hagi can do to be fully appreciated by some fans. 8th assist of the season already, and it’s 7 assists in 6 games for him. Both his passes here were worthy of an assist in their own right. Hopefully more fans are starting to see how important a player he is.

    Reminds me of Ozil.

Ozil is/was an assist machine, but because of his relaxed approach and tendency to drift out of games, he was criticised.

  6. Hagi was our main creative force during that first half, drifting out out it like the rest of them later on.

Tavernier was excellent too: that assist to Defoe was pin-point.

However, I think Davis was at the heart of that creativity early on too, and while the rest of them drifted out of it, he continued to graft when it got tough; he continued to probe but also covered us defensively too when we were a bit sloppy.

    Davis gets it, for me.

  7. Oft! A lot were waiting on that third goal!

  8. Interesting; very interesting.

Surprised to see Defoe start, but it's probably the best opportunity. He's very good at finding space in packed boxes -- which it'll inevitable be -- so he might suit this game.

Kamara and Arfield probably deserve a wee rest.

I'm not concerned in the lest to see Bassey replace Barisic - he's more than an able deputy and it's better if we don't take any risks with Borna.

It's great to have Aribo back.

It's quite exciting to have Kent, Hagi and Aribo in the same side today.

We need to capitalise on their slip-up.
