  1. Again, this is excellent stuff although I couldn't get the pdf to open properly. It may just be because I'm trying to access it at work though...
  2. Happens all the time in football when teams up their game against stronger opponents. For us its the Sheep, for Scotland its Liechstenstein....
  3. From twitter.... @RyanBabel: a very good friend ..former Celtic player Evander Sno had a heart attack
  4. playing for Ajax reserves I'm hearing. Don't have any other details. Sad news if true - the guy must be only about 22/22 years old.
  5. Great work guys. Happy to make a contribution as well.
  6. Before big matches I always have hope and belief. Its when the heart takes over from the head in the build up. I guarantee that before the Man U game I'll reckon Fergie's men are there for the taking and that all we need is a bit of inspiration and some backs-to-the-wall defending.
  7. Quite surprising since he has played reasonably well in 2 major tournaments (ACN and WC) in the last couple of years.
  8. A good post Andy! Fingers crossed Levein learns quick although I have no problem with him giving players a bollocking. I suspect the only reason it has been leaked is because certain players nose's have been put out of joint.
  9. Had you asked me that question before then I would have given you an answer! To answer directly - my rational brain says no, but my heart says YES! We need to beat Lithuania at home, get at least 4 points off Czech and hope other results go our way i.e. Lithuania dont keep up their promising start. A wee cheeky draw/win at home Spain would go a long way as well but thats me being overly optimistic. Hang on - you'll accuse me of sitting on the fence again so I'll say yes. Now, back to your pish about low expectations?
  10. I suspect you are on the wind-up here. Nonetheless, regardless of how Scotland do during Levein's tenure, I don't suppose anything would persuade you it was a success, regardless of the results on the pitch. I suspect today's story in the Daily Rebel might give us a clue here. Apparently Levein roasted the team at half-time calling McFadden wasteful and selfish, and Boyd lazy. In other news, bears really do shite in the woods!
  11. You can hark back to the halcyon days of Scottish fitba all day, it wont make us a better team right now. I've watched enough Scotland games to know better than to expect us to easily beat teams like Liechtenstein. Low expectations? I prefer to call it realism - a condition that doesn't stop me dreaming. I have not sat on the fence - my opinion is clear. In terms of performance we have been poor but results-wise we have done okay. It is too early to judge Levein's tenure. If you want to dive off the deep end then that's up to you.
  12. I thought Levein was a good appointment and he has done okay so far. Too many folk are quick to judge - I'd prefer to see where things lie come the end of the qualifying campaign. Also, I think folks expectation levels are too high when you consider we are a nation who has not qualified for a major competition for 12 years now.
  13. It was more than the press conference that indicated he was clueless. There was the Broadfoot "player of limited ability" comments, the bizarre team selection and tactics for that game too. Quite why he thought it was a good idea to sit in for the first half when a blind man could see we would struggle with the heat in the second half, I do not know. And, to be honest, that was just the start of the whole Burley debacle.
  14. An over-reaction IMO. Not an untypical one although quite bizarre considering he won the match. The sharp knives are out for Levein much in the same way they were for Burley, except this time I'm not so sure its deserved. Not yet anyway. The performance was poor but its the result that counts. Should that change to poor performances AND poor results, then I will reconsider.
  15. I'm not suggesting he is a panacea but time will tell regarding Levein. You and many others may have already written him off. But, whilst there are aspects of his approach I do not like (such as his post-match whinging), I am willing to give the guy a break whilst he gets results. If he stops getting results, all bets are off. I have been consistent on my views regarding the structure of our game so I don't see how that is me being unable to see the wood from the trees and I will continue to support the national team despite it being pretty desperate viewing at times. I can't remember us being anything other than inconsistent so yes you are lucky! As said above, I agree regarding root and branch reform of the game.
  16. Your wider points about the structure and organisation of the game I largely agree with. Where I differ from you is the aftermath of last night's game: I see us sitting top of the group with 4 points whereas you seem to see it as us plummeting new depths of desparity. Whilst poor, some of the reaction to last night's performance has been OTT in my opinion.
  17. Sent him a wee reminder text! :spl:
  18. On the contrary. I just don't subscribe to the harbinger of doom sentiments you set out in your original post.
  19. Sad sad news. Get well soon Sir Brian!
  20. I agree with the sentiments on Ferguson - we badly missed him last night and I hope Levein tries again to get him back. He is a natural leader as opposed to Fletcher who seems to struggle with the responsibility.
  21. Fletcher tries to do too much in a Scotland jersey. He wants to fetch and carry from the back four, run the channels, support the strikers, spread the play, make defence splitting passes, the works. There are few footballers in the world who can do all that effectively and consistently. At Man U he mostly keeps it simple - why can't he do the same for the national team? God knows we could do with someone with a bit of composure in the middle because Scott Brown is a headless chicken.
  22. The manager's performance is interesting. On the one hand he is sticking with old favourites who clearly have not performed in a Scotland jersey for a good while now (Brown and Fletcher in particular) but has done enough to keep the team in the hunt, despite playing poorly. He was criticised for playing too defensively yet when Frick was given too much space at the edge of the box by McManus, they scored. Had we played more expansively, there is every chance they would have found more space and today we could have been lamenting another defeat to a minnow. He made immediate changes after going a goal behind and the changes worked! Boyd was getting no change from the linesman/ref with regards off-side decisions; and McFadden was flattering to deceive (again!). The introduction of Robson and Morrison had a significant impact on the game so credit has to go to the manager for bringing them on. You learn more in times of adversity than at any other time. It seems to me that Levein will have learned a lot about his squad in the last 2 games and to have done so without losing is a good sign. We're still in the mixer to qualify in second position and in many ways I expect the next two games to be less nerve-racking than the first two. We always play better against top level opposition so I wouldn't discount us getting a cheeky draw against Spain - however unlikely that would seem on paper. As for Czech, they are must win games both home and away - even more so considering their defeat to Lithuania last night.
  23. That's the bit I mostly can't get my head around. I've seen various comments from people who normally consider themselves to be patriotic Scots, but who are getting stuck right in to the team. At the risk of repeating myself - WE WON!! Better the team that plays poorly but gets results, than the team playing silky football but never gets anywhere meaningful. Although it doesn't work as a direct comparison, there are certain parrallels with the Scottish domestic game...
  24. I should add that I have several gripes about the Scotland set-up, the selection policies, tactics and style of play - I just don't think we can expect to move instantly from the Burley era back to something akin to the performances seen under Smith and Eck.
  25. I refuse to join in with the doom merchants this time. I was quick to get on the Burley Get Tae F*** bandwagon but I don't think Levein deserves that treatment - not yet anyway. Three points is three points, and better we are a lucky team with the points in the bag, than an unlucky team with just one or none. Hopefully this is a turning point but the proof is in the pudding. Levein needs to build on this and learn from the mistakes made.
