But my point was to suggest that investing heavily in scouting networks in places far flung such as South America is no panacea. I'd prefer we focus on developing home grown talent and if we can pick up a few gems along the way then so be it. But I would contend that the frequency at which we find those will depend more on our management team than anything else.

I agree generally that our scouting network could do with improvement. Howver, the trouble with looking at the likes of the South American market for players is our budget. Sure we can bring some of these players across but because we are not part of Europe's financial elite, we are unlikely to be realistically competing for the signatures of the really top talent. Instead we would then be scrabbling around for the lesser lights who will inevitably have a lower success ratio. As a result we would also need to invest comparitively quite significant sums in the scouting network itself so that any players we do try to bring across, we had done our homework on. And it doesn't end there. Players from South American look to gain moves to Europe through complex ownership arrangements with agents. You can bet your last dollar that any deals we do to bring in such a player would only happen if we were cross an agent, or agents, palms with silver. And even then, you could see a number of them failing to settle into life in Scotland given the cultural differences and climate. So you have to wonder, given the significant investment that would be required in scouting, administration, ongoing management, wages, signing on fees, agents fees, etc; to bring in some undoubtedly talented players but with high levels of risk attached, is it really worth it? I think I'd rather we focussed on developing home grown talent.

Commons would, at face value, appear to be a decent addition to out squad. But thats about it. If he goes elsewhere, I am sure we can target someone else.
-
Thats what I mean, if he were to break with tradition he would invest now they might stand a chance of pushing on and being contenders. Vlad's previous form when they have been performing well saw them sell players or sack their manager.
-
Or will they fade as the heat turns up toward the end of the season? Based on their form over the last 10 games or so, you might be persuaded to take a punt on them but I am not convinced. I felt their tactics against us were effective but unlikely to have the same effect in our next meeting. They don't seem to have any decent back up strikers with Kyle injured and whilst they are filling the gap at the moment, I doubt it will continue for the rest of the season. Now, what might make be re-consider is if Mad Vlad was to dig some money out of his Ukio Bankas coffers and splash it on a couple of big signings. Say, £1m on the boy Eremenko on loan at Killie, and a striker in the same price bracket. Now that would be a really good statement of intent because we wont spend anything like that.

Wingers survive on confidence and go through regular peaks and troughs. Commons is likely to be exactly the same but does seem to have a reasonable pedigree and hasn't looked out of place in international football. £0.5m seems a reasonable enough fee. I wonder if we might perhaps be trying to sign him up on a pre-contract in the hope that this then triggers Derby into accepting a permanent deal this transfer window rather than recoup nothing at all.

I have avoided all the fuss about this as far as possible. I couldn't care less what they said and pretty much agree with MF's sentiments. Whether it was indiscreet, ill-advised, politically incorrect, whatever; it just doesn't register on my radar of things to give a toss about. As such, this will be my last post on this thread.

I have fond memories of Robertson and Laudrup tearing down the left side like a knife through butter so he gets my vote.

Not read any VB articles in a while. Probably because Finbarr O'Fended got Newsnow to ban them. And I have to say, it was much improved as compared to the last time I read one. Previously I thought they were a bit rambly but that article was excellent.

U19's Striker Kane Hemmings training with the 1st team today.....
stewarty replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
Agreed. Ness, Hutton, Wylde, Cole, etc have all done a good job this season. No reason why this lad cannot do the same. -
I hope what this guy says is true. But until someone Murray hands over the share certificates, I refuse to get my hopes up about anyone taking over.

Deeply, Deeply Satisfying for any Rangers Fan

Is that a Rangers scarf tied round the big fluffy microphone near the end of that wee .gif? Clearly the establishment force was strong at the game last night. -
I enjoyed that

Yup. Lafferty for me. Best finish, best performance. ETA - challenge to him now that Miller is all but gone, is to step up and do that every week. As a wiser man that me once said... every problem is an opportunity. -
National Secular Society Letter to SFA RE: Hugh Dallas
stewarty replied to Frankie's topic in General Football Chat
It is sad that we may be "happy" that such a letter has been reported by the BBC. Given their duty of impartiality, they should be reporting all sides of a news story regardless. This should be expected as a minimum. -
Good news if true. But given the inflated values of Premiership players, surely £3.5m is a bit cheap for a proven performer, club captain with international caps?

Unless I actually see Whyte make a comment in front of camera, I think it best to assume its a load ay p***. In the past 2 years I think I've read that exact same article (except for perhaps then names of the alleged protagonist(s)) about 20 times. Total guff.

I'm not sure that is what he was implying. More that fans who use the web, in general, seem to express far more extreme views than they would normally air in public.

Somewhere to stick the latest headlines for the latest installment of the silly season. I'll kick things off: Rangers line up Bosman for Killie Goalkeeper Cammy Bell http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/04/rangers-bosman-kilmarnock-cammy-bell

He's a decent player who perhaps has the capability to be a Novo-esque player for us. If we could go a swap deal for Webster I would be happy with that.

This thread is an over-reaction. Always happens when we dont get the result we expect. My analysis of Sunday's game. We were pish and the deserved losers. Celtic were better, but not by much. A couple of poor defensive errors led to the goals; Boughie, Greegs and Foster being the culprits. Based on the few recent matches we've had, we played at a level much below that of the Motherwell game; and our recent form in general. Celtic had gone three home matches without a win prior to Sunday so I found their post-match reaction a wee bit surprising as they looked like they had won the league. No complaints though- I'm sure the coaching staff will not have to go searching far for motivational talks prior to the next two OF matches. Sometimes we need a bad result to re-focus the players on the task ahead. Its not like we lost the title at the weekend, far from it.
