Match Thread [FT] Rangers 2 (Cerny 34', 58') - 0 St Johnstone

Coming off the Lyon scudding on Thursday, last night was never going to be pretty. Job done and forget it. Next spell of games between International breaks will be interesting. We'll be visiting Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Olympiakos and Hampden for a semi final against Motherwell. Aberdeen's credentials will be fully tested against us and Celtic(X2). Celtic also have a challenging run of games. -

Park bench, feeding the ducks. Although, he'd probably miss the lake with the bread. -

Dortmund won the European Cup Winners Cup in 65/66 beating West Ham in the semis and Liverpool in the Final. Defending the trophy in the following season, they got a first round bye then Rangers put them out in the second round. Dortmund didn't qualify for European football again until 82/83 season. In the UEFA cup first round, they were once again drawn to play Rangers. Once again, Rangers put them out. Their next season in Europe was 87/88. Another visit to Scotland in the first round. However this time they managed to win the tie, against Celtic.

Aye, but I have seen enough in other games to feel he doesn't have a full grasp on the situation. A case in point being the structure of the team to play against a Lyon side with exceptional wingers. You talk about "time and luck". If he wants more time, at times he needs to be pragmatic and give luck a better chance of playing a part. Watching Clement in press conferences of late is becoming painful. It is curious that some of the above applies to Rodgers intransigence/Celtic CL scudded, again. But he comes at it from a position of strength, although if he repeats the structure and Atlanta thrash them, he'll suddenly become a target. Relative expectation levels. Clement doesn't have the benefit of a firm base and he needs to cut out the self inflicted damage. Depressing, but you start to think that McInnes wouldn't be the worst option at this stage in a rebuilding process. Doubt the board would be brave enough/ support would tolerate it. It is a process that I think will take 3 to 5 years. You don't suddenly happen upon a functioning player trader model and the revenue stream that this can generate. -

What a pair of wingers Lyon have !! From a football perspective, worth the admission money. -

Individual errors, missing a bonafide sitter, etc don't help but Lyon were simply a far better team. Their middle to front players made the most of the space we presented them with. That, IMO is down to the manager. How he set up the team and the players he selected. Clement has a very difficult remit. We don't want to hear excuses but it is going to a gunfight with a wooden sword. But, last night he compounded the situation through his own decisions. -

The main difference is that team was more than competitive, domestically. -

That is a very solid and competent starting XI from 17 years ago. Light years ahead of what we currently have. -
Dortmund were simply stronger, faster, better technically and tactically. Nothing to do with referring. Expectation levels amongst their fans was high, so this has brought them down with a heavy thud. Will be interesting to see how the players react at the Ross County. I'm sure they drew up in Inverness after a prior 7 goal CL scudding.

I reckon we'll have our European game face on and perform to our better levels. The uncertainty for me is Lyon. No idea what type of performance they are up for. No prediction. Not a clue how it will go. Will be an interesting 90 minutes for several reasons. Especially to see how we do against a good level of player. -

Excellent rendition of a great tune and what a result 👏🏻 Looks like the new bunch can get up for a European match, like the last lot. Good, we badly need some positivity coming from somewhere in the club. No better place than the pitch. Lyon match will probably tell us more. -
Another German side only scored the nine goals last night. Context: In our last 19 games in CL group stage football, we have scored 9 goals.

Rangers supporting investors want out and talk of "investor fatigue" amongst those have already thrown in their money. But expect to find outside Investors (who want to make a profit) desperate to throw their money at a business that loses on average 10M a year. What kind of investor can do well out of us ? Asset stripper? They can take a look where the last man to try (not just speak about it) and make the business viable is at the moment. Hospital. Gilligan, King, McCoist giving his opinion, midnight breaking news. .... Depressing

There has been a lot of investment over the years of one sort or another. We have nearly always used most of it for short term temporary fixes. Not forgetting how the 2012 IPO money was used !! John Bennett was the first to actually put into practice some of what was really needed. Lets say it wasn't appreciated. However, he lacked the cojones, delayed communication to TELL the support what was going on and why. Not to mention being too late (Beale summer 23). The other side of the city got it right but their support didn't like the medicine either. But upstairs didn't care, they did what needed doing. That kind of leadership has been lacking at Ibrox for decades.

Bit of a stretch but my vote goes to Hamza. Boy looks like he could be a player.

What we need is to become a viable business that doesn't spend around 10M more than it earns every year. What we as fans have to accept is that the transition will come with a degree of pain and show the patience necessary. What we need is vision, competence and cojones in those upstairs. What looks like happening is more of what has been going on for decades.

A collective determination, effort and application has been there today. Makes a huge difference. Still fragile.
