podcast thread (image) GN Pod 026 - How can we regain momentum?
buster. replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
Decent listen, mostly down to the common sense and IMO relevant logic coming from the Rev.I.M. Jolly I don't understand anyone not caring that much about getting through to the European KO stages or not. It's tangible prestige that comes with financial reward. I'd estimate at around a minimum of 3M sterling (although by the time we'd be paid part of that it might double given exchange rates/brexit shambles & effects ). -
Before I was born........... and I thought I was an auld git Beating the eventual European Champions at Ibrox must have been a good night. edit. Just realised it would have been Spring 1965 and so I had arrived, just. edit2 Looking at the European record. We don't appear to have even qualified for Europe for the following season (65/66) yet made a European Final the season after Makes me think of us making the 2008 UEFA Cup Final then going out to Kaunas in the first qualifier a couple of months later.

Plus for Inter now is that they may get to play at Ibrox in the Spring.

The Winter 2018/19 - Transfer Window Rumours and Deals - Thread

I doubt there will be any real news until January and rumours are like 'a fix' that doesn't fix anything. Bottomline is that our finances limit scope when it comes to quality and it'll probably be about creative short-cuts with fingers crossed. Bit like backing an outsider. Sometimes they come in, mostly they don't. This is where patience and realism should kick in and continue to build a squad as fast as possible but without betting too big amounts on apparent emergency fixes. We've got to work with what we have and bring in little bits of quality when they become available and it fits in with plans (including budget). -
EBT's being heavily used was down to Sir Duped, no-one else.

Davis His current physical state is the potential issue that might impair on 'envisaged' performance levels or probability of getting injured and missing significant chunks of games. Over the years, we've seen it repeatedly. Recruiting players coming towards the end of their careers based on their past performance levels, rather than current reality. Sometimes it can work (hence 6 month loan for Davis would be perfect before any contract offer)) but I reckon the majority of times it goes Pete Tong and you have a big wage going out for little in return. -

We haven't the money to buy successful centre-forwards at the higher end other than in 'smaller countries' (eg. Finland). A good scouting network/contacts/luck is essential. -

A 6 month loan is as far as we should go for Davis. Let him prove his fitness and earn any further deal. -

Sometimes I think we are both the 'best' and the 'worst' support. The board need to stay strong and four square behind the SG project. SG&Co also need to learn quickly and adapt where necessary. -

The lesson should be that we don't chop and change as much (the financial situation can't support that anyway). That we don't throw playerrs under a bus after two bad games or a loss of confidence. We got quantity in the summer (it was required), we now need to allocate funds towards quality. Short-termism is our biggest enemy. -
Forlan has a bigger carbon footprint than a small country in Africa.

Second time, he's not played much and today even when he scores, he doesn't. -

We aren't winning this league and it's about SG&Co building a team over at least 3 transfer windows that can win a league within a couple of seasons. We've played very poorly in the last couple of games, it happens. Yes, there are some worrying signs and fundamental gaps in the squad and in quality that need addressed. We need to up our game again and at least perform well in Vienna, then get 3 points from Hamilton. -

At least Morelos and Arfield will be well rested for Vienna. Had he played well today, I'd have played Lafferty against the Austrians instead of Alfredo,....... but he didnae so......... ! Although he'll rightly be peeved that he scored a perfectly good goal that never stood. -

Hamilton being a few days ago and a 4-0 win tends to give a side some confidence and belief. I thought today would end up a draw but didn't think we'd play as poorly. The Goldson mistake, the Lafferty 'offside', Kent going off injured and Dundee going down to 10 and sitting-in all contributed. -

Injuries, suspensions, fatigue, confidence are part of football. A poor run of results accompanying the above happens to everyone, every season. -

The fact we lack a real creative midfielder makes todays result anything but a surprise. Kent going off at HT was the departure of most of our creative midfield today and it showed. It was always going to be a difficult fixture. Dundee going down to ten probably made it more difficult (once they reorganised at HT). -

I know you weren't but just wanted to get the 'keep the faith' message out there ! A poor run of form can happen and you can see mistakes have been made at all levels (players on the pitch, manager and recruitment....but this happens as well). We were light on creative options in the middle of the pitch and this was apparent since Skhupi. -

We qualified for EL group stages and are second in the league. We are playing badly but the last thing we need to do is look for more managerial change. We need to keep and support SG&Co. -

We needed numbers in and finances meant loans were always going to play a big part in that. Over time we might reduce our dependency on them. -

We desperately need a creative midfielder. Kent did a job in the first half. -
