That's interesting. Are you saying that King disappointed and annoyed those fans, presumably the Union of Fans, that he had dealings with?

OFFICIAL: New Home Kit for Season 2014/15 revealed
Hildy replied to Super Cooper's topic in Rangers Chat
One tries not to be over-critical about matters Rangers, but it's an impossible task. This ghastly effort is just one more reason to bandy words like 'mediocre' and 'unimaginative' about. The club seems to be making a concerted effort to do everything badly. The strip has slipped in quality and this reflects the standing of the club and the standard of the team. I look forward to the day when Rangers says something or does something that will be worthy of positive comment. Make it soon. For God's sake, make it soon. -
Rangers To Honour Sandy Jardine by re-naming the Govan Stand in his honour.
Hildy replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
This is true, and of course John Greig has been privileged to actually see his statue although it commemorates a sad event more than the player himself. It is when death occurs though that people are motivated to do something to honour those that merit a lasting tribute.- 46 replies

Rangers To Honour Sandy Jardine by re-naming the Govan Stand in his honour.
Hildy replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
Where do we go from here when other leading Rangers figures fade away? What about those distinguished servants who have long gone and not been publicly remembered? We could all list deserving names that the club should have immortalised, but it didn't do it and now we have this. It's clear that Jardine has the respect of those who saw him play, but after Struth, should Jardine have been next in line for such an honour? I don't think so. Our club has honoured one great player, but in going so, it has dishonoured many who are also worthy of this mark of respect and who were mostly before Jardine's time. A handful of people made this decision, authorised by a board of unpopular non-Rangers supporting directors. They know as much about Rangers as I do about Celtic. While some may applaud this decision, I believe it to be wholly wrong, and I say that without meaning to tarnish Jardine's name in any way. We could end up having a collection of names from roughly the one era being honoured and practically no-one from our more distant and equally glorious past. That can't be right.- 46 replies

Ally McCoist and Rangers: Time for some home truths
Hildy replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
I wouldn't go near McInnes. In fact I wouldn't go near anyone who might be considered to be a Walter Smith disciple. McInnes might be better than McCoist, but the club needs a complete change of football culture and it won't happen under McInnes. -
Rangers To Honour Sandy Jardine by re-naming the Govan Stand in his honour.
Hildy replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
The club is wrong. We are free to say so without a hint of disrespect to the man. The last thing we need is to pussyfoot around the issue and pretend that it is right when it really it is not. No-one has said or is likely to say a bad word about the man but there should not be the merest hint that criticism of this gesture is out of bounds, distasteful or inappropriate. We are here to express our opinions on matters concerning the club, and while it is easy to heap praise in situations like this, it is more useful to give an honest view even if it doesn't fit with the mood of the hour.- 46 replies

Rangers To Honour Sandy Jardine by re-naming the Govan Stand in his honour.
Hildy replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
Not at all. The only thing that is disrespectful is the implication that criticism of this move should be discouraged or disallowed. As we can see on this thread, people who remember him fondly are uneasy about this gesture. They can be uneasy without being disrespectful.- 46 replies

A poor but perhaps predictable decision from a board that is chasing popularity. I strongly disagree with this move.- 46 replies

Ally McCoist and Rangers: Time for some home truths
Hildy replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
There are different degrees of fan, from the casual to the diehard, and we all prioritise different things while sharing the same allegiance. The boardroom debacle that is damaging our club has led to thousands of fans opting out of buying season tickets, but I really do wonder - how many of the stay-aways are actually sick of the unimaginative football, the coaching staff and the sight of players who fall well short of the standard we should be aspiring to? -
Ally McCoist and Rangers: Time for some home truths
Hildy replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
Big business knows that football fans, due to their unswerving loyalty to club, are unlikely to question owners very hard. New owners come in, say some nice things, and fans then defend them to the hilt until it's too late. Fans tend to hate their own for even questioning the boardroom and of course the Rangers support makes a big thing about being loyal. From a ruthless business point of view, football fans present a wonderful opportunity for exploitation. They are customers who keep buying the product even when it is tired and useless. If a stadium leaseback happens, it will be presented as a wonderful opportunity to invest in the team, and some of us - thankfully not all - will buy it. The faith that people have in big business is mystifying - and worrying. -
Ally McCoist and Rangers: Time for some home truths
Hildy replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
This reluctance people have to be 'negative' - it always fascinates. The team is a hotch-potch of generally clueless mediocrity; it labours to perform, it is sore on the eye, it is about as fluent as Fabio Cannavaro's English, it would field have a dozen central defenders against a girl guide select and now it has been humbled by an American college team. If you want to be positive about Rangers, speak as you find. Don't defend the indefensible. It is not negative to tell the truth about a Rangers team that is never going to be what you want it to be. Ally McCoist will still be a Rangers legend when he is no longer manager. While he remains as manager, Rangers will never build a legendary team. Off the park we have problems, but on the park, our problems are just as daunting. -
This is a good post. Well said.

Anything else is a bonus? Why bother attending then? They can check the result and cut out the too often miserable experience of actually being there. If the result is everything, and watchable football is considered to be a bonus, it is wholly understandable that people are reluctant to pay good money to watch Rangers. People pay to attend an event that they hope will be enjoyable. When they are told that entertainment is a bonus, and with an implication that they should be grateful for it, they cannot and should not be blamed for packing the whole thing in.

Many would argue that Rangers are not providing 'entertainment'. That's why they arrive late, leave early and spend much of their time at Ibrox chatting, eating or checking their phones. I've seen season tickets offered to Rangers-minded folk - free of charge - for games at Ibrox and few are interested. Those who go usually return content that they gave up on the match-going habit, often with comments like: ' How can you watch that every week? It's awful'. (This is the watered-down less colourful description). Take loyalty out of the equation and there is very little to get excited about watching Rangers. It may be bracketed as entertainment but many don't feel entertained at all. When Rangers fans return from Ibrox feeling shortchanged after watching Rangers for free, something is badly wrong.

As you say, it's expensive, but are Rangers really offering value for money? This will be Scottish second division football and Rangers are already difficult to watch due to the unsophisticated way they approach the game. When something is expensive, people tend to be more hesitant and thoughtful before making a purchase. If football truly is the people's game, we have to ask ourselves, should it be 'expensive' to attend? Can Rangers really afford to price people out of going? People will go less or not at all once they lose the habit. This is an issue - not just for the present unpopular regime - but for football in general and Rangers in particular - whoever is in charge.

The unquestioningly loyal will stump up - no questions asked. Having done so, they will expect others to follow suit, but many are starting to wonder about their attendance at Ibrox. Is it worth the effort and cost? Live streams are not difficult to find for clued-up fans. Tickets can be picked up outside Ibrox on the day for Old Firm games. The cost - over £40 - and inconvenient kick-off times have put people off. £50 tickets are a real possibility for this fixture next season. More will choose not to pay when the initial excitement of the return of this contest wanes. Football is getting outrageously expensive and it's hard to justify paying serious money to sit through and hour and a half of monotony and tedium. You don't believe me? Look around. Even the diehards are transfixed by their smartphones. Latest scores, betting latest, social life arrangements, gossip and news stories attract people in a way that this Rangers team does not. Many stopped going to Ibrox because they were bored, but those who are still present appear to be bored too. Is this sustainable when prices are rising again and we're in the second division? My fear is that loyalty is on the way out. My observation is that people increasingly want something back for their money, and they aren't getting it at Ibrox. I want Rangers to have a great future, but more than ever now, I understand why this is unlikely to happen. The unquestioningly loyal will accept any old junk, but the discerning want a return. How dare they.

I'm sure we all have, but a new club would have the same people supporting it, or at least some of them anyway. It could fall by the wayside of course, but imagine if it actually took off. It would be a wonderful experience to grow a new club from the ashes of the old one. Hopefully Rangers will get through this sorry period and we'll never need to start a new club, but I'm not particularly optimistic - at the moment - about our longer term outlook.

I can understand that, but with the passage of time, and with a new upstart club borrowing a tune or two from the Rangers repertoire, people might feel inclined to back it when it eventually squared up to Celtic. Being a football fanatic without having an allegiance is a bit like being a car nut without owning a car. It can be done, but it is surely an incomplete experience.

Like you and Gunslinger, I think there would have been a split, but there would be no real Rangers any more. The argument would be about which new group represented the true spirit of the old Rangers. I know my own position on this. Once it was confirmed beyond doubt that Rangers had ceased to be, I would have been behind a new fan-owned entity rather than a club that happened to play at Ibrox, that had no history, and which was owned anonymously or by people who had allegiances elsewhere. I would look on the demise of the old club as an opportunity to build a new one, and it would probably be quite exciting after we had got over the cataclysmic event of Rangers going under.

If membership had not been transferred, and if the club had died, I wonder if we would have rallied to a genuinely new club that was owned by untrusted strangers which happened to play at Ibrox - with no history - or if we would have opted to start afresh with a new club wholly owned by its membership? Perhaps there would have been a split and both would have happened.

The possible appointment of Nerlinger was a rare piece of good news coming out of Ibrox. I'm disappointed that it won't happen.

To make seven figures though, a pre-season tournament is probably the best idea, but at our level it is difficult to attract three high calibre clubs when Rangers are low calibre and uncompetitive opposition. If we ever become a decent side again, we will surely be able to come up with something worthwhile, but our present circumstances limit possibilities to come up with something seriously lucrative.

Well done, Dundee. Manchester City, possibly the richest club in the world, are certainly a top club financially, if not in terms of trophies. I see no value for City in it unless to give their squad players a run-out. At Rangers, we surely want to see top teams fielding their top players instead of witnessing their fringe players up against our best players. I do not believe Rangers would have made, as has been suggested, seven figures from a pre-season friendly at Ibrox. A well-run Rangers could - in the future - but not this lot.
