he was a different kind of midfielder, definitely more typical of a continental type player. I always think of that kind of midfielder as being a joining up player, he links defence to attack, he is always looking for that undramatic, but effective joining pass. I remember a game he played for Brum against Liverpool and him being the stand out midfielder, with Gerrard on the pitch, some might say understated.

good post, it is the hard work and simple things that show a players class, it isn't going for the long, glory passes, or trying to beat three players and then losing possession, but understanding that it is holding on to possession, playing in team mates and supporting them for the return pass. Easy to write down and say but to do it week in week out, whilst still covering the ground and making the important midfield tackles, shows his class.

Ibramovich scored a screamer last night as well, this guy seems to be getting better with age.

great thread. when I played football for my primary school, which would have been 1974/75, we played a 2-3-5 formation. The league was a goal fest, which we won that year, with our centre forward, a lad called Ian Stirton, who had a few years at Rangers, mainly as a reserve, but played in a few friendlies etc, banging in plenty of goals. Your central midfielder played a lot deeper, just to cover between your back two, who were essentially covering as full backs, with your right and left midfielder truly putting in box to box shifts. tried to explain 2-3-5 to my boys recently, they thought I was talking some kind of crazy language, football from the dark ages to them.

agree, he was never funny, and the sourest faced comedian I've ever seen in every day life, off stage and that was before we had our problems, however don't think he is deserving of the abuse he's received in this thread, he is still a Rangers fan.

there seems to be no consensus amongst all Bears and I find this too much to be taking this display to Ibrox, when they're not representative of all fans. Whilst the Easdales have had a shady past I believe they're both Rangers fans and I agree that they should come forward and vocalise, themselves, or through a 3rd party, their intentions, plans and possibly who's backing them, though they seem to be reasonably wealthy in their own right. From everything I've read here and elsewhere I think Stockbridge going is a good thing, so no issues with that pressure, but again, their will be other Bears with possibly a different opinion, so parking a van representing a sub-set of fans outside Ibrox, I don't think delivers the right message. There have been many Rangers boards in the past who were more insulated than the Kremlin when it came to issuing information and we never questioned that, because that was the way it has always been. It shouldn't be like that and we should receive more information, particularly at this time, but how much? Additionally, how long have the Easdales actually been inside Ibrox, hardly a long time and the AGM would be the time to publish that information, so maybe SoS should lay off till that time. If they've done something wrong since they bought their way into Ibrox, well I'm not convinced it is enough to be hounded out already. I'm not necessarily a fan but I believe in a fair hearing and there is time for concerted efforts to enforce resignation, should it be proven that they don't have the Clubs best interests at heart and a genuine plan to move us forward, but seems a bit premature to me.

Celtic shareholders want UEFA to probe SFA over Rangers punishment
MikeN63 replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
sounds like newspaper shite but would like it to be true; would show their continued obsession with us, not only locally but on a larger UK scale, as this story would get plenty of SSN coverage, plus would display a massive nervousness within their smaller shareholders about what will happen once we're back in the top division. I fail to understand, if the story had any basis of reality, where the resolution instigators, thought where this motion could go. It isn't going to harm Rangers, may show up the small mindedness of septic fans/shareholders, please let it be true.- 37 replies

I think that some of the Board should walk, but whoever is on the Board their needs to be more transparency to the fans. their has been board talk of the fans assisting/investing in the Club and ultimately people like King and McColl are fans first and investors second, so if King is to become Chairman can we expect more financial transparency on going, because if we have this then we should expect more reasonable financial behaviours within the Board?

totally believe in if you're good enough you're old enough and recently Lewis McLeod is the only one who has consistently delivered against that adage. We hear that Crawford shows up fantastically in training but he's not in the game enough on a Saturday/Sunday to merit a regular starting place. these fringe, young guys need to step up and knock the door down, because they are getting more opportunities whilst we're in the lower leagues. there is talent their, it is consistency that is the issue, which seems to be a problem for youth players to deliver upon. as for the septic comments; most of their transfers have been of the Jelavic sort, buy in from an obscure country/club and develop for a couple of years and then sell for a much bigger fee, their youth system is no better than ours, the one where I think I've seen most recent sell on youth talent has been Dundee Utd, in Scotland anyway, not sure of the reason for that.

he's only 19 and just wants to play, so playing on the left, though may do better on the right instead of Peralta, in an experienced midfield with Black and Law may help his development. He has all the attributes, can cover back, can tackle, can play a pass, can score a goal, nothing bad to say about this lad. I am sure there have been other clubs interested in him before, I hope he'll be around for the Premiership years.

Neil Doncaster relaxed over lack of SPFL sponsor
MikeN63 replied to ian1964's topic in General Football Chat
good to see him promote the official betting partner as well! good to see his moral compass is well placed and that the likes of Wonga are not appropriate but WH are to be acknowledged, particularly after the Black saga. -

there's two law codes in Scotland, there is the innocent till proven guilty, the one favoured by any sane and sensible person on this planet, there is then the rabid Rangers knocking press and mhanks rule in anything that can impact our club, guilty until proven innocent, which this shit storm in a tea cup seems to be all about.- 109 replies

bought two kids strips last weekend (9-10 and an 11-12) and the prices have hardly changed since last season. Also we've had this quality discussion in regards to previous providers and I honestly can't see that much variation. personally don't like the bit inside the collar, at the front, but the quality isn't that different to recent productions.

opinions, agree with other posters, thought he was liable to errors as a full-back and was prone to try and beat players, as opposed to play the pass as a defender, which caused us problems.

Whittaker's best games for Rangers were when he played in a midfield role, sure that was the role he was playing when he scored that cracker against Sporting Lisbon. Wallace is an out an out, specialist, attacking left back and is better in that position than Whittaker ever was. I also think Wallace is stronger than Whittaker. One of Whittaker's major benefits to Rangers was his utility capability, which he personally may or may not have liked, sure most players prefer a specific position. Both players can cross a ball, though Wallace seems to get to the line more and whips in some excellent left sided balls. I always thought Whittaker had potential for great consistency, but honestly and maybe it could be lack of positional consistency, never saw it. Prefer Wallace as a player.

"taking steps to ensure it can't happen again"- putting a picture of Neil lemon at the bottom of the mast, possibly?

him and Charles Green a great partnership, "my little Paki friend" both seeing Rangers as a cash cow to advantage themselves, but obviously only buddies to squeeze as much cash out of our Club as possible. Green seemed plausible, said the right things at the appropriate moments, but the true colours are displayed now, he's only back to try and eek out a bit more from fans and the share price, just feck off Green with your recently acquired buddie because neither of you should get a penny more than you invested. as ex England manager Jim Royle said, or am I mixing things up, contracts yer arse Ahmad.

think we need to take this back to a base, footballing level; we had a good pre-season, players all trained well, a great facilities, with some of the best coaching staff that money can buy in Scotland, we had players on salaries that other 1st division teams can only dream about, we came out played very poor tactical football and were beaten by a team that we never should be defeated by. Ally McCoist is not a quality football manager, his tactical capability is very limited, his plan B every time is to punt long balls into the box, in fact occasionally that is his plan A. he has not exploited the opportunity he had to build a new footballing philosophy at Rangers. He's run out of excuses and time. Great servant, has been a true Ranger, but time to step aside and let the Club move forwards. Admire Walter's friendship and loyalty but if he has to go as well, so be it, the team has to move on and we won't do that under Ally's tutelage.
-
he got that one from Walter, he didn't even think of that one on his own, but totally agree, why would Rangers need to play that against any team in the Scottish 3rd division with our playing resources, advertises that Ally has not had an original tactical thought of his own since being parachuted into his management role.
-
We won't even last 2 more rounds of the Ramsden Cup with Ally in charge
MikeN63 replied to Anchorman's topic in Rangers Chat
I agree totally with the comment that McCoist had an incredible chance to start a new footballing philosophy, simple things like pass and move. After all we were a f-t football team with an SPL football coaching set up and incredible facilities, the ability to make the most of our youth set up and better wage structure, signing capability. We could start again, pass and move, excellent passing capability, movement off the ball, McCoist had a chance to create a different footballing style at Rangers, something that would carry us forward into the future, something fans would love to come and watch, go away satisfied, tell their fellow Bears about and drive up attendances and a desire to follow, follow. He has failed miserably to do that and I didn't see todays game but from what I heard we resorted to long balls into the box for Jig to win, but mainly things were won by Marvin Andrews, who is probably 38 now?! The one thing that is similar to John Greig and McCoist is they had no management experience elsewhere , but Greig was up against a very good septic team of that era and got sacked, McCoist, due to circumstances, has been given time in div 3 and now div 2 (now rebranded as div 1) and has proven he has no tactical capability. On purely a footballing level, he needs to be replaced. Good time to do it, all the new signings will not have developed any real level of loyalty.
