Is it unreasonable to expect Murty to be doing better than he currently is? We have seen footballers being chucked in at the deep end to manage clubs who have risen to the challenge. Murty is a coach with years of experience and he looks completely clueless.

Julian Nagelsman, 29, 4th in Bundesliga

Going off at a tangent maybe, but with regards to us a young coach with bright eyes would be wonderful. The problem is that without a proven track record and considerable experience, we're likely to end up with yet another dud. Mind you, most of the names being linked are so poor that I'd be open to anything. I think the key change is getting the infrastructure in place so a coach can come and go and we don't end up rebuilding from scratch again. Put that in place and appointing a young coach doesn't become such a big risk. He can quickly be changed. I think we'll end up with some poor Scottish manager who will need replaced again in a year or 2. -
You say the demand at Ibrox is immense, but we put up with horrendous football under Eck for long enough, we put up with McCoist for years and Warburton wasn't sacked until we were almost 30 points behind Celtic and 3rd in a 2 team league. We play in a piss poor league with resources far larger than everyone else bar Celtic. I really don't think this is the difficult position it's made out to be. If we implement the correct methods and start playing good football again, the results will follow. I don't understand the logic behind 'we must win ugly'.

Where did I say that? I said he was performing extremely poorly and deserved to be sacked from Chelsea. All true.
-
The free flowing football disappeared at the tail end of last season. We should aspire to play football correctly regardless of who the manager is.

What should I be liking?

What about him?

A calm, rational analysis from Richard Wilson

Yet he was pro Mike Ashley and cohorts? How on earth were/are they 'fit and proper'? I like BH and he's very knowledgeable when it comes to on the pitch. He's agenda-driven when it comes to everything off it. -
Frank De Boer's the only option that looks remotely interesting. And I criticised Conte and Chelsea early in the season quite rightly. I changed my view on that quickly. Most things I get right

Objectively they are not a good team. Good teams don't consistently get nowhere in Europe, crashing out of Europa, bottom of the CL groups if qualifying at all. That said, the rest of us are crap as you say. And more than a couple of players is needed to bridge a 27 points (and counting) gap. We pretty much need a whole new team.

We really are scraping the bottom of the barrel if we're looking at him.
-
I'd put Muscat second bottom of the pile, firmly above McLeish.

1. I want a manager with the criteria I stated. 2. I don't want McLeish for reasons already stated. Do you understand yet? I'd rather have McInnes because I consider McLeish to be completely useless. McInnes isn't someone that particularly interests me though. It's like me saying I want us to sign an internationalist striker who's scored at the highest level. That doesn't mean I'd want us to go and bring James Beattie back.

So because I want a manager with experiencing of winning league titles and coaching at a high level that must automatically mean I want every single manager who has ever done this? Try thinking through things a bit more in future. I know jumping down my throat is your favourite pastime on here, but you're just starting to look foolish. And you're right, I don't want a guy so inept he couldn't even hold down a job in Egypt.
-
Does he have experience of winning league titles and competing in Europe? Or at least a lot of experience coaching at a high level? No, so he doesn't seem like an ideal candidate to me. He went to England and bombed and despite being 10 years in management, he's still managing at a low level. That said, we could do a lot worse, like McLeish. Edit - he did win the second tier with St Johnstone, though that's irrelevant.
-
I agree with just about all of that, though we did play good football in 02/03 and the tail end of 10/11. I'm also not sure we have that many technically gifted players currently.

Craig - I will respond to that tomorrow if I've got time. I find it absolutely mind boggling that anyone in our support is looking upon the potential return of Alex McLeish in a remotely favourable light. To go off at a tangent somewhat, I bet if SDM was rumoured to be buying us back, a sizable chunk of our support would be advocating him. I just don't understand our support at times.

You should have just left it there. And relegated them twice. Worth pointing out that this is a tournament few sides in England care about, particularly a few years ago. Bad managers and players sometimes win trophies. 5 of those trophies were with Advocaat's squad. I could have won those trophies with a team containing Klos, Numan, Ferguson, Arteta, De Boer etc. playing in Scottish football. He's playing in a 2 team league so winning trophies is inevitable, particularly when the squad are earning a fortune in wages and there's various internationalists to choose from. And lost to Georgia and failed to qualify. Strachan did it twice. McLeish's record overall in Europe was extremely poor. See Viktoria Zizkov. He is a woeful manager. That's why he's out of work after being sacked from a job in Egypt. I've presented plenty facts and you can find them all below. - Record consecutive losses to Celtic. - 2 and and half months without a victory (record 10 games) - Knocked out by Viktoria Zizkov in Europe with a team containing Klos, Amoruso, Ferguson, Arteta, Numan, De Boer etc. - Third in the SPL with a squad on big money, below a team of Lithuanians. - Numerous awful signings like Capucho, Emerson, Ostenstad, Mladenovic etc. All players on a fortune. - Brutal football once he had his own players. - Has been a complete disaster and repeatedly sacked ever since. Last season failing in Egypt! Let's review his positions since leaving: Scotland - did well initially but lost to Georgia and ultimately failed. Birmingham City - relegated twice. Left under a cloud. Aston Villa - almost relegated and sacked. In charge less than a year. Nottingham Forest - sacked after barely a month. Genk - sacked after less than a year. Zamalek - sacked after a couple of months. Good managers don't get sacked repeatedly over a short period like that.
-
Someone who we don't already know to be completely inept at the job.
-
Why would he get OK results? He went 10 games without a win with a squad on a fortune. Who are the 4 or 5 clubs he did well with? Why does he keep getting sacked?
-
Why should I provide any balance? He's consistently proven he's a woeful manager. I welcome anyone on here to debate with me the merits of having him as manager.
-
Can anyone explain to me what is remotely safe about McLeish? The guy's been sacked FOUR times in the last five and a bit years. And that's not including Birmingham who he left after relegating twice. He proved beyond any doubt with us that he's an atrocious manager, so what more do you want him to show you? McLeish back in charge would honestly be my very worst nightmare come to fruition. I've said this for years on here. He's just a complete dud and watching us in the final season was hellish.

Alex McLeish is beyond awful.

Well played!
