The good old effy cup continues to entertain. Wrexham performed sturdily against Sheffield United in the replay at Bramall Lane. Blades played really good passing football but couldn’t finish until taking a lead in the second half which Wrexham equalised with a penalty. They got a second penalty which they missed and then lost two goals deep into extra time. Slightly weird to think that Don Bradman hit 140 on the ground for the Australians against Yorkshire.

But it was wrong to broadcast it. If they had said a scout from Rangers had been seen at the rhinoceros enclosure at the zoo, that would have been acceptable as a comment on the club’s style of play, a comment that listeners might or might not have agreed with. There was no need to single out for insult a young foreigner who unlike Gascoigne, for example, had hardly any profile other than not being very successful. Speaking about rhinos, can you imagine the demented press coverage Don Kitchenbrand would get?

Gordon and his programme went rapidly downhill after that.
