Given the demographic of the electorate I have no quarrel with the Robertson vote. Unlike many I was very pleased when Rangers signed him and he didn’t let us down.

I am too young to realistically assess Young and Woodburn but their repute is massive and we’re entitled to take that into account. The old fellows said Woodburn was the best but they never played together in central defence. Young was the Curtain’s original RB, converting to CH when Woodburn was suspended and serving club and country illustriously. I understand why many are choosing Butcher and Gough and I liked Amo but it’s Ronnie McKinnon and Geordie Young.

Bobby Shearer would be vulnerable to pace but a big six footer brick outhouse would cause him no problem such was the applied strength of his twckling. Caldow on the other hand relied on his own speed over the ground and the speed of his interception and tackling. He would prosper anywhere, everywhere.

This is easy. ERIC CALDOW. Probably best right back too because he played there with the same distinction. I thought of keeping him for RB to let me pick Sammy Cox for LB but Cox was primarily left half and we should be choosing the best in every position and not shoe-horning in others no matter how good they were otherwise we could end up Greig, Greig and Greig ….

Numerous is a bit much. A few describes it better. Some were important though. That’s why I chose Ritchie.

On the same note Bobby Shearer taking over from the injured Billy Ritchie at Tynecastle after about eleven minutes, no subs of course. He conceded a goal in the second half but the Famous scored three. What a game, what a night in the days when the Hearts had taken over from the Hibs as Rangers’ main challengers

Superb analysis, John. I saw Brown but I really only know him by reputation. George Niven was excellent and Billy Ritchie even better, the epitome of reliability with superb anticipation and positional sense. I can’t remember Ritchie having to fly about the goal performing miracle saves nor can I remember him losing daft goals. He must have done, I suppose. I really liked Chris Woods. I hoped he would stay for a while because I didn’t think he could be bettered. Peter McCloy is often ridiculed but his record speaks for itself. Playing for Motherwell against the Hibs he made the best save I ever saw, equal to Gordon Banks’ effort. Goram and McGregor, both performers of miracles over and over again every one of them seeming more impossible than the previous. So it has to be either of these two or Ritchie. I see the professional goalkeeper among us has gone unhesitatingly for Goram. Only a fool would fail to agree with that choice. OK. It’s Billy Ritchie.
