    thought Pena was pretty good

    I agree.

Charlie Miller had a bit of a career but not the stellar one predicted by Hateley.

Did that 4-2-4 come before the Hungarians

You’re right. Hungary were first. What a team they had. I was being parochial as usual.

Hearts were first to do it officially by name. Danny Ferguson, normally a right half, number 4 trotted out with 7 on his back and took post on the right of the back four.

“ GerrupyurrwingFerrgyssun” the helpful cry from the terracing.

Do you know Man City - and most other elite sides - play like this? It's a 3-2-5.

The old stuff was more 3-2-2-3.

Two fullbacks either side of the centre-half.

    Two half-backs, left and right.

Two inside forwards, left and right.

    Centre furrit, wingers either side.

One half-back tended to be further back than the other, likewise one of the inside men.

Rangers were playing a 4-2-4 before the system was invented. The earliest example being:

    Shearer, Davis, Patterson, Little

    McMillan, Stevenson

    Scott, Millar, Baird, Wilson

  4. Is London as a venue a good sign? Handy for Clement but also Eustace. Probably rules out McInnes.

For some reason, I’m starting to lean towards Muscat. I didn’t like him as a player because he was a nutcase. It’s not going to be him, though. He’s still in Yokohama so there isn’t any need for the appointments committee to go to London. Tokyo would have been a big clue.

    8 - box-to-box, a bit further forward than a #6. (Gerrard, Lampard, DeBruyne)

Ah, John Greig, the Prince of them all because he could do full back and centre forward as well often in the same ninety minutes.

    9  and 10 - You know what #9 and #10 are, surely?

Nine the main striker or centre forward as we used to call them, got that, I think.

The ten? The nine’s chief assistant? Seems to be Ralphie Brand’s role. He actually wore number ten on his back and actually scored more than the nine. Role reversal.

  6. Fired up the telly a few minutes ago and what appears on the screen but one C. McLaughlin pontificating from Paris on the Rugby match tomorrow. Good to know that we’ll be getting the most informed and most professional analysis from a true rugger expert. Shows the importance of the game otherwise it would have been the other idiot Idessane.

  7. @26th of foot has launched a milan missile left over from his old job at the unanimous vote.

A fair and even minded moderator is entitled to discard 26th’s vote for McAusland because he did not play the whole match. A substitute must play more than sixty minutes or do something exceptional in a shorter time to be eligible.

Either that or just retrospectively ban the bamstick.
