The old stuff was more 3-2-2-3.

Two fullbacks either side of the centre-half.

Two half-backs, left and right.

Two inside forwards, left and right.

Centre furrit, wingers either side.

One half-back tended to be further back than the other, likewise one of the inside men.

For some reason, I’m starting to lean towards Muscat. I didn’t like him as a player because he was a nutcase. It’s not going to be him, though. He’s still in Yokohama so there isn’t any need for the appointments committee to go to London. Tokyo would have been a big clue.

For the benefit of the really aged what are sixes, eights and tens? Do sevens play any part in the game? I’m guessing that the numbers refer to pitch areas and or playing roles.

Derek Ferguson aged just over sixteen but played in a friendly aged fifteen. Durrant was a geriatric nineteen.
