  1. Numerous is a bit much. A few describes it better. Some were important though. That’s why I chose Ritchie.
  2. Just a pity Rangers couldn’t.
  3. Niemi was fine. Dibble didn’t let us down. Charbonnier? Occasionally brilliant but you’d never bet the house on him. Since we’re into the duffers, how about Christiansen (expensive) and Myhre (borrowed)?
  4. Don’t recall dips in form. McGregor went over the hill but that’s not his fault. Goalkeeper’s Job Description: Keep the ball out of the net.
  5. On the same note Bobby Shearer taking over from the injured Billy Ritchie at Tynecastle after about eleven minutes, no subs of course. He conceded a goal in the second half but the Famous scored three. What a game, what a night in the days when the Hearts had taken over from the Hibs as Rangers’ main challengers
  6. A wild bull of a ‘keeper if I remember right or was it just a myth?
  7. The old Rugby Park was reckoned the best playing surface in the country.
  8. Superb analysis, John. I saw Brown but I really only know him by reputation. George Niven was excellent and Billy Ritchie even better, the epitome of reliability with superb anticipation and positional sense. I can’t remember Ritchie having to fly about the goal performing miracle saves nor can I remember him losing daft goals. He must have done, I suppose. I really liked Chris Woods. I hoped he would stay for a while because I didn’t think he could be bettered. Peter McCloy is often ridiculed but his record speaks for itself. Playing for Motherwell against the Hibs he made the best save I ever saw, equal to Gordon Banks’ effort. Goram and McGregor, both performers of miracles over and over again every one of them seeming more impossible than the previous. So it has to be either of these two or Ritchie. I see the professional goalkeeper among us has gone unhesitatingly for Goram. Only a fool would fail to agree with that choice. OK. It’s Billy Ritchie.
  9. Aw c’mon, be fair. Only 3-0 after ninety minutes.
  10. Singing and dancing chez @compo tonight.
  11. Aye, fair enough but I prefer Shirley Bassey.
  12. A long period of silence from Liverpool would be most welcome. What was that song? “Who’s that lying on the runway.” And Heysel.
  13. That’s all so unfair on Aberdeen for reasons which will no doubt emerge.
  14. A legacy from Raymond Glendenning.
  15. You should know that “dwarf” is not acceptable. Probably “low altitude accomplished persons” would do. I have no idea how the word “homosexual” is rendered these days. The choice is multiple but heaven help you if you pick the wrong one.
  16. I’ve never been keen on Cantwell, asil. Can produce something superb from time to time but the rest of the team isn’t good enough to carry him waiting for it to happen.
  17. Pretty good. Spot on with Sheffield United.
  18. DJ was also a really classy centre half. All the necessary physicality and a lot of skills to go with it. If Rangers hadn’t had Colin Jackson DJ might have become full time in that position.
  19. How far back, Rab? Derek Parlane, Jimmy Millar? Of course Millar wasn’t a six footer, he only jumped like one.
  20. The river banks are just the place for smoke and flame. An enclosed stand isn’t.
  21. I agree with all of that except Everton and Newcastle. Everton storming on the road but not so good at Goodison and Mags v Arsenal impossible to predict the result never mind the score. Could be 4-0, could be 1-4. It’s a match I would like to be at.
  22. AT: Concurring with the learned @compoabove, 1964 SCF. NOT AT: Barcelona, unfortunately without his colourful excuse for missing Newcastle.
