  1. Long list of candidates for this position defending in front of a back four.

Ian McColl, maybe too right sided.

Sammy Cox, maybe too left sided.

Harry Davis, iron man with CH experience.

    Dave Smith could do it.
    So could Ian Ferguson.

    Hemdani might fit.

@compo is right, of course. It’s John Greig the play anywhere, everywhere man. I like a defensive midfielder who careers forward and bangs in the goals.

  2. The pairings are:

    8 votes: Butcher and Gough

    3 votes: Gough and Weir

    2 votes: McKinnon and Gough

    2 votes: Gough and Amoruso

    1 vote:   Young and McKinnon

    1 vote:   Young and Butcher

    1 vote:   Young and Gough

    1 vote:   Forsyth and Jackson

    1 vote:   Gough and Cuellar

    1 vote:   Maclaren and Amoruso

    1 vote:   Amoruso and Weir

The results are unaudited. Singletons have been ignored.

Comic Award goes to @compo for his Valentine/Stanners combo. Or was that more of a tragedy?

Only one bloke got it right with Young and McKinnon.

Gary Stevens was fantastic as was Sandy Jardine but I plump for captain cutlass the second captain at our club to lift a treble after Jock Shaw my left back .

    Bobby Shearer

That’s a battle fighting pair of fullbacks but I’ve picked neither. I’ve got another role in mind for them.

My best RB is Caldow but I already nominated him at LB.

Young’s early service was at RB but as shown when he moved to CH, his immense physique was wasted on the flank.
John Little, the Canadian, was very good, Gary Stevens even better but excluding Caldow the choice isn’t too hard - Sandy Jardine. (“Great player, this boy”: David Francey commentating on Jardine’s first match against an east end team. How true)

  4. Boumsong was an artist. Kept Marvin calm, quite a good pairing.

Who can forget in a celtic game the ball trickling towards the empty net and Boumsong ambling after it, waving to a distant Marvin that all was well and looking over his shoulder surveying the pitch like a chess player working on the next three moves before with, the utmost pedal dexterity, hooking the ball back off the line left footed, taking two steps and launching a right footed forty yarder along the ground to his unmarked winger.

I agree with Bill, though. Bougherra was better value on the field of play as opposed to the balance sheet. Neither makes the fairly long short leet.

  5. We’re picking two so that’s the immaculate Ronnie McKinnon and one from:-

    Woodburn,

    Young,

    Jackson,

    Forsyth.

    Butcher,

    Gough,

    Amoruso,

    Cuellar,

    Weir.

I am too young to realistically assess Young and Woodburn but their repute is massive and we’re entitled to take that into account. The old fellows said Woodburn was the best but they never played together in central defence. Young was the Curtain’s original RB, converting to CH when Woodburn was suspended and serving club and country illustriously.

I understand why many are choosing Butcher and Gough and I liked Amo but it’s Ronnie McKinnon and Geordie Young.

Shearer and Caldow were suited to their era being smallish; nowadays they would probably struggle.

Bobby Shearer would be vulnerable to pace but a big six footer brick outhouse would cause him no problem such was the applied strength of his twckling.

Caldow on the other hand relied on his own speed over the ground and the speed of his interception and tackling. He would prosper anywhere, everywhere.

  7. This is easy. ERIC CALDOW.

Probably best right back too because he played there with the same distinction. I thought of keeping him for RB to let me pick Sammy Cox for LB but Cox was primarily left half and we should be choosing the best in every position and not shoe-horning in others no matter how good they were otherwise we could end up Greig, Greig and Greig ….
