  1. I was into my 20s when it dawned on me that England might overtake Scotland in head-to-head victories. Look what happened.
  2. "Own goal" Brown.? No thank you. Anichebe from WBA maybe?
  3. I knew you were old, Compo, but jings crivvens
  4. Thanks. I understand that better now.
  5. That is well written and an eye opener for readers like me whose knowledge of tacticsl set-ups is pretty shallow. One thing. How can you have two pivots? Is that not a one man job no matter what unit of the team he is playing in? Of course the elderly see the word "pivot" and immediately think of Big Ben, Geordie Young and last of the line, Willie T.
  6. He got that one well wrong didn't he. If I were looking for a job now in journalism, law, local govt., arts or any of the other jessie professions I'd be changing my current anglo-norman name to something more celtish. McGuire even.
  7. Vardy's great assets apart from instinctive finishing are his anticipation of when a colleague is going to make pass/cross and electric movement to where the ball is going. Takes playing time to adjust that anticipation to new team mates who in turn have to learn what movement Vardy is most likely to make.
  8. Useful when there are league deciders to be won otherwise not up to much.
  9. Hugh Shaw, Walter Galbraith, Bob Shankly, Eddie Turnbull but now Lennon. Downfall of a once respectable club
  10. "Rangers target Niko Kranjcar's father ........" Who does he play for? Will he not be a bit old?
  11. Better than the "golden generation" a few years back? They certainly play nice un-English football. Kane and Ali are terrific players. So is Vardy in a system that suits him. Not so sure about the defence nder the sort of pressure that Spain or Germany can exert.
  12. "The 'mysterious' bike found in a storeroom full of dust that today adorns the trophy room. Willie Thornton says Racing Club of Paris gave us it. The name of the club 'Racing' sounds as if it could be more than the truth" The "racing" refers to foot racing.
  13. Maybe Racing gifted a bike 40s/50s. Maybe St E presented a bike in 1975. Maybe they threw in a miner's lamp but that was more likely Gornik. As I say, I don't know. But I do know they brought a bike with them in 1957. Fact.
  14. Never mind that, Boabie. Did we beat the greenyins?
  15. Two ties. 1957 and 1975. The bike gift was 1957.
  16. A gift from St Etienne marking a euro-tie late 50s early 60s. At the time, perhaps still, bicycle manufacture was a big industry in the city of St E.
  17. Interesting move. Huge success or utter failure. Nothing in between.
  18. Sky saying he's going to Manchester Utd on a year's contract. Preferred OT to China.
  19. He'll be joining Raul and Morientes in the squad for Japan
  20. Not a sports department production, obviously. I feature in the crowd behind the goal as Eric cracks it in. World class player. What would he cost at today's values?
  21. His auld faither was Crown Agent. (Heid bummer of the PFs)
  22. Enough of these cyber threats. I expect the poor fellow is on the 'phone now to the Gardai, the entire Irish Diplomatic Corps and any passing Nuncio to demand protection from imminent attack.
  23. John Shughes is available for a reprise of the Leith gig.
  24. Note the "finished on a high". Fair enough. It's a true statement. No mention of " tarnished by fan behaviour". Quite right. It was a football achievement. But contrast with a cup win in Barcelona, 1972. The victory is always qualified by the other bit. Without fail.
