That would be a good starting point but they would need a run of four or five games together regardless of results or performances. Are we willing to accept that? It seems that although the season was set aside for development, the club is still trying to compete. Can’t be done.

Martin Buchan was the Aberdeen defender. His father also Martin played for Buckie Thistle at outside or inside right, outstanding at that level. That Scottish Cup semi final was one of Stein’s best ever games under threat of suspension for the final. Most semi finals don’t stick in the memory, probably because they are over-shadowed by the finals or in a few cases because they are the end of the road. The only other one I remember is the 1-2 replay against Hibs 1958 and the notorious disallowed equaliser minutes from the end.

I’m just worried. I understand the conflict but it’s Aberdeen and though my head has written off the season my inner juvenile harbours a flicker of hope. If it were near the season’s end and Hearts or even Dundee or Motherwell were in Aberdeen’s position I would probably agree

Tommy Callaghan would be a first pick for the current Scotland side. His brother was a better defender than any player currently playing in the Scottish defence. Same applies to Rangers when I think about it.
