During Rangers’ niar there was fairly consistent, sometime stern, competition from Aberdeen and at times Motherwell and Kilmarnock and the occasional flicker from Hearts and at the end, celtic started to become a nuisance. Over their niar Hibs had a go, sometimes Dundee Utd and Aberdeen though not terribly seriously. I think Rangers did better in their niar than they did in ours so I conclude that Rangers’ niar has more merit than theirs. No bias or anything like that.

Perhaps but momentum means a lot in football. Players with greater determination or even the players we had managed by Smith or Wallace would probably have got through it and not collapsed at Dingwall So, one Cup and not far off a treble. What did Beale come close to winning?

It was a pretty good bounce - one trophy, unlucky in another cup competition and Rangers would have won the league but for fixture postponements.

Look at that front row. You might have expected Woodburn or Mccoll, both titans, to be seated next to Geordie Young but it’s a youthful Eric Caldow. Mr Struth could obviously foretell the future. Look at the second row. Pass quickly over Stanners and disregard Woodburn and McColl - we won’t see their like again - but Rae, Little and Prentice would transform the current team.
