  1. How about Bobby Shearer under the lights at Tynecastle, 26 October,  1960?

Billy Ritchie carried off after ten minutes at 0-0 and no substitutes in those days. Nonetheless the Famous beat the champions - John Cumming, Gordon Smith, Willie Bauld an’ a’ that - 1-3.

What a game, what a night. I can still see the look of grim determination on Shearer’s face as he pulled on the gloves and walked back to the goalmouth.

Alex and Ralphie scored for the Heroes before Smith got one for the Hearts (ach, Shearer, ye mug, ye) but Davie calmed the nerves.

The momentum argument isn't backed up by facts. Over the 20 odd years of the play offs , the highest percentage of winners are teams who were 3rd ie. The teams that as just losing out and regarded as losing momentum

    That’s an interesting fact.

I wonder how many of the third place finishers had fallen out of the top two and how many had surged up from lower places.

This isn’t a demand for clarity, BSRT. If I’m too lazy to check for myself, I’ll just have to wonder.

  3. Should be interesting with four big names Villa and WBA, Derby and Leeds but the actual football is likely to be cautious with so much at stake.

I like West Brom but I’ve not forgiven them for downing tools when they got to a position of comfort over two seasons ago. Villa should manage to get past them. With their resources they should have been contending for outright promotion but they can’t seem to get things right so they will be defeated by the winners of Leeds/Derby.

Derby have momentum. I think they’ll go up.

I have always enjoyed games against the Hibs well except the 79 cup final that seemed to go on forever before we won it that year but under their new manager they have played some decent football so it makes for a good game tomorrow although there's nothing at stake apart from bragging rights.

I agree about games against Hibs being good matches.  When I was a wee fellow it was usually prospective champions against current holders with the other greens nowhere.

But there are three points at stake. OK, three points won’t win the league but the gap will be something approaching respectable as opposed to unbridgeable.

  5. Yeovil were providers of FA Cup shocks in their previous non-league existence, so it might be good for them.

As for Notts County, misfortune should not fall on teams in black and white stripes.

Didn’t know that about Juventus. Thanks.

  6. 0-1 Ajax.

‘Spurs eventually gained a bit of possession and exerted pressure but not enough to trouble Ajax defence. No real save required by the ‘keeper.

All is not lost. Son could score a couple in the next leg but they might need three.

  7. Villa v WBA will be thunderous. The last time Villa won the old Division 1 they beat the Throstles 4-3    in one of the last games of the season. West Brom finished third but might have been first if they’d beaten Villa.

I have a funny feeling that Derby might get the third promotion place.

  8. If a Rangers player had dragged an injured separate entity like no other player from the pitch, would we not have received a long lecture from Professor michael stewart, MB, ChB, FRCS(PQ) on how an injury could have been exacerbated by reckless intervention? Helluva bad for the bio-mechanics, that sort of thing.

  9. Here is a correction to the results posted earlier.
