On standby for five minutes on the job roster I switch on the telly to see the score in the semi-final. It’s in added time in the first half, celtic on the attack. “Just like them to score now” thrills Squeallum McLeod. They don’t. Aberdeen clear the ball up the park, a forward latches on to it and heads for the spalpeens’ goal. “Offside!” shrieks the little lad. The replay shows otherwise. The co-commentator, identity unknown, shrewdly observes: “that's why ye’re no runnin’ the line, Liam.” I switch off.

Not a waste of time because I’m now clear that though McLeod is genuinely fond of the Dons, his greater love is for their opponents today.

Tavernier only tackled twice in the whole game? And he only won one? What sort of fullback is that? You would think he’d been playing behind a dominant midfield and rampant attack. Or maybe Dundee played with no left flank.

The defeat at home to Motherwell was the killer. The team hasn’t been able to recover from that.

Thanks but in my entire life I might have written about four lines that McIlvanney could have written in four minutes and then thrown in the wastepaper basket.

A superb bowler. I think Wardle and Laker have better Test averages but they played many fewer matches than Underwood which probably helps. Also a lot of his matches were against the West Indies when their batting was unequalled yet I don’t remember him getting flayed.
