  1. The team in #2 is the cup final side with Davy Provan at left back for the injured Caldow who played brilliantly from 1955 until Bobby Smith broke his leg at Wembley in 1963.
  2. Traffic is low on the board because not many folk are at their workplace so no need to relieve boredom. Here’s my big brother’s team late 40s. Brown, Young, Shaw, McColl, Woodburn, Cox, Waddell, Duncanson, Thornton, Williamson, Rutherford. Must have been good. Beat Elgin City 6-1 in the Scottish Cup. Also wrestled championships from a magnificent Hibernian side.
  3. Sure did. 1959-1964 approx. Have another squint at #56 Best XI.
  4. Cup final sides. I knew you’d solve the problem, Rousseau. 15/5/63 v celtic, 3-0. Ritchie, Shearer, Provan, Greig, McKinnon, Baxter, Henderson, McMillan, Millar, Brand , Wilson.
  5. My all time favourite Rangers 3-1 Dundee. It takes two excellent teams to make a great final. 2-1 might have been fair. Dundonians will say the other way round.
  6. At the time many hibbees reckoned Whittaker the best of the three.
  7. I can’t remember Dazzler. One of the Germans? Or Dalziel? Centre half is Johnnie Valentine. Actually, I’m beginning to feel sorry for him. I’ve been excoriating him for more than sixty years. To him and his family I apologise. Still pick him for the worst XI, though.
  8. A great idea but perhaps difficult to manage. Many players spanned two decades. The great Ian McColl played in three. Which decade gets the Legend? A thorny problem, the answer to which Rousseau will already have found. Appearances/medals per decade perhaps? A lot of work but we’ve got time on our hands.
  9. This topic is the best XI but the best team: The names in capitals are the optimum combination. The guys in brackets all played a part at one time or another, mostly with distinction. (Niven) RITCHIE (Little) SHEARER CALDOW (Provan) (Davis) GREIG (Paterson) McKINNON BAXTER ( (Stevenson) (Scott) HENDERSON McMILLAN. (McLean) (Murray) MILLAR (Forrest) BRAND (Hubbard) WILSON That’s the team I call the Rangers.
  10. If they won’t show Rangers, I’d like to see Clyde v celtic 1-0 in 1955 and celtic v Hearts 1-3 the following year.
  11. Florence and Vienna and the like are week long City Breaks. Dornoch will do fine for the ‘bus run so long as we get back over the Highland Line before nightfall.
  12. If I were picking an old fashioned 2:3:5 the wingers would be Henderson and Wilson. Add Alex Scott to that illustrious list.
  13. Goram Jardine, Amoruso, McKinnon, Caldow (Capt) Greig Gazza, Baxter Laudrup, Johnstone, McCoist. Bill is right. The immaculate Eric Caldow was world class. I’ve had different elevens in the past. No doubt a different one tomorrow.
  14. That’s the very fellow. I was 2/3 up the north terrace just forrard of midships and abaft the player as he struck the ball. Great to see Jimmy Millar careering about at the final whistle.
  15. He only got three. The penalty was par for the course but the first two were magical.
  16. Kai’s. I can see it as if yesterday. In fact that’s not true. I didn’t really see it at the time either. I saw his foot go back and I saw the net bulge. The connection of foot to ball and the flight of the ball to net were too quick for what was keen eyesight then.
  17. Fair play, old chap. Nobody can say that you get everything wrong.
  18. It was of course the ranks, not the hordes of Tuscany. That’s enough of this rank, Roman stuff for the time being.
  19. On FF GranvllusClutterbuckus has posted this table of Rangers’ top ten goal scorers. The placings are by average rather than total. Don’t know if it’s league goals only. Name Nationality Position Rangers career Appearances Goals Goal/Game Jimmy Smith Scotland FW 1930–1946 259 249 96,14% Jim Forrest Scotland FW 1962–1967 163 145 88,96% Robert Cumming Hamilton Scotland FW 1897–1906 209 184 88,04% Willie Reid Scotland FW 1909–1920 230 195 84,78% Jimmy Fleming Scotland FW 1925–1934 268 223 83,21% Max Murray Scotland FW 1955–1963 154 121 78,57% Geordie Henderson Scotland FW 1919–1927 195 142 72,82% George McLean Scotland FW 1962–1967 117 82 70,09% Billy Simpson Northern Ireland FW 1950–1959 239 163 68,20% Ralph Brand Scotland FW 1954–1965 317 206 64,98% Some old guys there. Surprised that Ralphie Brand is tenth after Maxie Murray and George McLean much maligned, by me anyway, and old warhorse Billy Simpson. No McCoist.
  20. I’m thinking more Horatius. And the hordes of Tuscany greetin’ on the phone-ins.
  21. Never. This is compo. He’s elite. Glenlivets, Glennfiddichs, Ben Riachs - that sort of thing.
