  1. 44 in 57 gives Greaves an average of 0.77,  well ahead of Rooney, 53 in 119 @ 0.45 and Charlton, 49 in 106 @ 0.46 and comfortably ahead of Lineker, 48 in 80 @ 0.60.

Tom Finney got 30 in 76 @ 0.39 but he got most of his from the wings.

Greaves doesn’t do as well as Nat Lofthouse. 30 in 33 @ 0.90.

Of these only Lofthouse and Lineker were true centre forwards. Greaves was the classic inside forward, auxiliary striker (Ralph Brand) Charlton played both inside and centre, latterly midfield. Rooney is a mid-fiielder. How many would they have scored as centres only? Perhaps not as many because their talents of coming onto chances created by others would have been stifled in one to one battles with centre halves.

How much does a striker’s average diminish the longer he plays? Did Lofthouse get out at the right time?

Never mind the stats. Old @compo was probable right - again.

The sensible thing to do is make the top flight a 16 team league and go from 4 divisions to 3 divisions to what it was in the past

    Correct.

You could even regionlise the bottom two leagues so Stranraer dont have to drive up to Elgin

Agreed. Then Elgin don’t have to drive down to Stranraer.

Shame for the good citizens of Stranraer, though. They don’t get to see the Black an’ Whecht.

RANGERS director Alastair Johnston has questioned whether Celtic would be awarded “eight-and-a-half in a row” if the SPFL decide to call the title early.

Johnston insists if the Hoops were crowned champions now then there would forever be an asterisk beside the 2019/20 league campaign.

Neil Lennon’s side are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with Rangers in second place. And it remains to be seen how the campaign will be played out.

Some have called for the league to be declared null and void, while others believe the campaign should be ended with current standings counting as final.

Johnston, 71, however believes all games should be played out if entirely possible.

Speaking to The Times, he said: "I don't want to be frivolous about it but a lot of Rangers fans have reached out to me and basically said, 'Mr Johnston, if Celtic are designated as the winners of the league, does it mean they have won eight-and-a-half in a row?'

"That's not something you want - that asterisk.

"So ideally I can't imagine that anybody really wants to have their efforts undermined or compromised or not appreciated.
"The ideal would be to get [the full season] done, but there is also the reality of the financial situation.

"Can you actually afford to run by June? You've got a lot of players that are out of contract at the end of June.

"What's going to happen? The financial circumstances of football clubs right now is also significant.

"Ideally from the clubs' standpoint and for the integrity of the game, we would like every effort to be made to finish the season.

"That's going to be challenging. There is still April, May, June and potentially July before things get going again, but we've got to be realistic. We've got to work with reality and not aspiration, no question about that”

Yeah, McGrain was 10 times the player that McKimmie was.

    Of course.

I'd never heard of Martis, but with one cap, does he really deserve to be in front of, say, McLeish?

He was competing with McKinnon, McNeil and Ure. Motherwell had a very good half line, Aitken, Martis, McCann. Forwards not bad either. Reid, Father Quinn, St John, Hunter, Weir.

  5. Exclude Rangers players and those like Denis Law and Billy Liddell who didn’t play in the Scottish League.

    Brown (Dundee)

McKimmie, Miller (both Aberdeen) Martis (Motherwell)  Bobby Cox (Dundee)

    Cumming, Young, McKay (All Hearts)

Smith, Reilly (both Hibernian) Ring (Clyde)

John Cumming is the captain and I’ve given myself some  licence because the midfield three never played as such.

No celts. If I’m honest Danny McGrain should have got in. Murdoch would be considered for the reserves and I’ve just remembered Dalglish.

For example, take a truly wonderful player like Ralph Brand, has there been a better inside forward since?

I’ve been thinking about this and you’re right. In the role of assistant striker he was so good he was the chief striker. He didn’t have to do a lot of the fetch and carry stuff because of the long range passing ability of McMillan and Baxter and the fact that so many attacks were launched from the wings. I wonder how many he scored from Jimmy Millar nod-downs.

  7. Did anyone do it better than Alex Scott?

Was there a more thrilling sight than Scott racing onto the ball, past the fullback, already beaten by the precision of the pass from Ian McMillan, then without looking up and with no reduction of pace, whipping over a wicked cross for Murray, Kichenbrand or Millar to bullet into the net?

@Bill will nominate Tommy McLean but his deliberate and careful accuracy didn’t have the electric excitement of Scott’s.

  8. I chose the early 60s team ( burying ‘Spurs and Eintracht in the lockdown chamber of the memory) but  I can’t ignore the merits of the GazzaLaudo sides so, in 4-4-2:

    Goram

    Caldow, Greig, McKinnon, Robertson

    Henderson, Laudrup, Gascoigne, Baxter

    Millar, Brand.

I’ve been a bit creative with the fullbacks to accommodate Robertson. Caldow could play left or right, no bother.

    The manager is Walter.

The chief scout is Scot Symon. He had an eye for a player.

The Sports Psychologist is Bobby Shearer.
