  1. Meanwhile in another competition City and Arsenal start their effy cup-tie like trains but run out of steam after half an hour. 1-0 to City in the end though Arsenal had more and better chances. Trossard looks worth the money. Young Lewis a mighty prospect. Overall an enjoyable match.
  2. Fair enough - for Evertonians. Some would say Joe Mercer or Tommy Lawton. As an outsider looking in, I’d say Andy Gray, Trevor Steven or Gary Stephens who all went on to an even higher level.
  3. Jimmy Shand?
  4. See big Goldson, near got it right so he did. Arfield came on to a decent game. Kamara, unexpected flashes of brilliance and Alfie at the end - prophetic words? Hope not.
  5. From the resumption, season 1947/47 up to 1964/65 Rangers were ten times champions, Hibs thrice, Hearts twice (should have been three) Aberdeen, Dundee, Kilmarnock and another team all had one championship. The same teams occupied the runners-up spots if they weren’t winning. Some third places are interesting. East Fife and Jags twice each, Motherwell, Third Lanark and Dunfermline all once. We all know what happened after that. As buster says, Aberdeen had a brief flurry and United managed it once. So, yes, Rangers are one of the two pikes in a pond of minnows, so, mighty to that extent though not able to compete with ocean-going sharks. A warning well given.
  6. Alfie got it right first time.
  7. What? Alan Morton didn’t wear these. He’s your model on and off the park.
  8. Aye. Don’t confuse might with fame. Rangers are still famous but their might is considerably reduced. Can’t compete with Southampton in money terms. Southampton! Good God. I expect @compo is thinking of a time when the Arsenal at their mightiest could just about compete with Rangers.
  9. What’s wrong with that? Had a great career at Liverpool.
  10. Hand wringer and he needs a razor blade, scissors and comb.
  11. Rangers’ best, certainly pre-bunion.
  12. Best right winger: Mrs Thatcher was never registered as a player so the nominations are Waddell, Scott and Henderson and the winner is Wullie. Best outside left: Nominations are Hubbard, Wilson and Johnston and the winner is Davy
  13. Is it as bad as celtic at home to caley? Don’t think so. Infinitely worse than Berwick.
  14. Does he not get a dram? Fair play to Goodwin. He shook the scorer’s hand at the final whistle. His last act as manager?
  15. Lamps out. Who’ll light up the darkness at Goodison? Bielsa? Gerrard?
  16. Was it not the Fiscal’s office that lost the evidence? No doubt the Enquiry will be reporting soon.
  17. Roy Aitken and Dixie (ower the bar) Deans?
  18. Monsieur, je vous lève le chapeau.
  19. The only Evertonians I knew were my brother’s RC in-laws. Great blokes. Bro served his time on the Clyde so he wasn’t normally well disposed to the other side. He liked these guys, though. The day of his wedding Everton were at home to City. It’s a wonder the wedding cars didn’t go to Goodison instead of the Registry Office.
  20. Don’t worry, compo. Johnnie Mackenzie and Dave McParland don’t play for them any more.
  21. Adjusted that a little bit.
  22. I’d like Arsenal first and Newcastle second or even the other way round but if it’s going to Manchester, then City all day every day. City take flak and “plastics” taunts for their new Middle-East wealth but I remember the Trautmann/Johnstone/Revie team and the wonderful Colin Bell side. “Plastics” don’t attract 30,000 crowds while playing in lower Divisions. I reckon 30-40,000 is their core, though, and the rest are glory hunters.
  23. I watched a bit of Sportscene, something I haven’t done for a good few years. Hibs v Hearts looked like a good old fashioned cup-tie. Hibs unlucky though Hearts probably deserved the win. Good goal by Shankland and two yellows inflicted on him for reasons known only to the referee. I even watched the celtic bit. VAR and the ref (Clancy?) gave them a weird penalty to set them on their way. And Squeellum McLeod is most definitely one of them. Not even a Dons fan could be so ecstatically rapturous about a celtic throw-in. St Johnstone’s ‘keeper had three excellent saves. I suppose he and his fellows have terrific saves in games where Rangers are not the opponents. I just don’t seem to hear about them.
  24. It’s an asset to want to play for Rangers. Not so much an asset to duck out of your obligation to your employer.
