Dr Waiton on Rangers, Free Speech and Sectarianism
Juancornetto replied to ThatsWhyWeirChamps's topic in Rangers Chat
Our fan base is actually half a dozen little factions all sniping at each other and following their handful of charismatic leaders blindly. If ever there was a clearer example of Divide and Conquer in action we are it. We would be a powerful force if we could unite behind a concept (not a person) we would be a really powerful force. A fan club with 200k+ members would carry a lot of weight. I'm waiting for Dave King https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcSuF7F6xXo -

Say what you like about SDM but he was always aware of the big picture and put Rangers on Europe's top table during the formation of the Champions League , ECA and G14. We punched way above our weight in terms of representation and now Lawwell has taken up the cudgels and is attempting to follow in his footsteps. Adam Crozier in his time as FA Chief Executive was all for Rangers and Celtic joining but when he resigned in 2002 any will to force it through was gone. "There is nothing more that can be done to further our case," said McLelland. "When Adam Crozier resigned last week our last chance of relocating in England went with him." (from UEFA.com) Nowadays the picture is very different....Scottish Football has declined and English Football has exponentially grown into a truly global brand. They don't need us and any positive noises we hear from time to time are simply patronising lip service. Go for your life Peter, we're a double act, if you shout loud enough about Celtic all people hear is "..and Rangers". -

The clearest indicator of Celtic Football Club's condoning of illegal behavior. The terrorism act specifically forbids glorification of proscribed terrorist organisations yet a football club is blatantly defending exactly that. It would shameful but then we know that club have no shame.

Four months to take stock of the job in hand? If only we could all get away with stalling our customers for that long before doing anything to progress the business.

Euro 2016: Home nations await qualification draw
Juancornetto replied to ian1964's topic in General Football Chat
We can beat 3 of those 5 if we play to our recent form, it'll then come down to how Germany and Poland do against the minnows and us. Craig Levein hasn't surfaced anywhere else in football since our shameful WC qualifying campaign, trying to shut up shop for a draw when we needed to win games. If we are to see a major tournament in the next 20 years, it needs to be now.- 35 replies

Catholic schools create Catholics, spot on. Non denominational schools produce young adults who have grown up mixing with and playing with other young adults on the street and on social media but who, because of the vociferous and aggressively insular nature of their parents religion have been segregated and educated at a Catholic school. It took me many years to reconcile this in my own mind and to see the other guys and girls who I grew up with but who were segregated along religious lines as completely the same as me The inverse of this is also true, and they too had to reconcile the fact that they had been taught purposely or not that they were in some way different. Human nature is hard wired to fear those who you perceive as different, it's an evolutionary trait that kept one tribe or culture safe from another potentially hostile one. Worldwide we have problems with groups of one race, religion or background discriminating against one another. If we could remove the biggest veil of difference our children are placed under we could side-step that process. -

Secularism is not about one religion or the other, what is it you don't get about that? It makes no difference whether politicians, educators or those in offices of power follow the teachings of the Pope or Kermit the Frog, they should not use their positions to further the aims of their chosen organisation. You think that they can put aside their religion and do the job purely objectively, I disagree. We should be worried about any group who abandon reason and logic in favour of a supernatural belief having any influence in any kind of office in a civilised and progressive society. Religion is a personal choice and one you can only make when you're in possession of enough knowledge to accept or reject it. Five year old kids are certainly not equipped with that yet we allow them to be indoctrinated into such an organisation for the next ten years of their lives. Madrassa's, Catholic Schools any kind of faith school is an affront to a secular society. My whole point all along is that Scotland is not a secular nation, i think I've given enough examples and information to suggest that I was 100% correct in my point. -

Who exactly is allowing sectarianism to pass without comment TPB? From what I can gather from the various conversations so far, we all agree that sectarianism and bigotry is rife. What we don';t seem to agree on is that you seem to think it's only superficial and that it doesn't reach as far up the echelons of politics and religion as myself and others do. From the top down, the RC Church's mission in this country (and all other compliant states) is to keep the numbers up and to place it's followers in as many positions of influence as it possibly can. It's not a conspiracy theory dreamed up by folk like me because of football, it's right there, in your face. If you think that religion's in this country are all altruistic benign entities then I'm afraid I have bad news for you. We're far from secular in this country, we have clergy in the House of Lords, the Queen's other title is Supreme Governor of The Church of England and those are only the high profile links. We all know that "Celtic minded" individuals have great difficulty being objective when it comes to matters of the perceived enemy. -
Are the two schemes effectively competing with each other or what? We can't even have one fan ownership vehicle, what a fractious shower we are.

I don't think he looks down his nose, it's more of a disdain for the gritty, nasty aspects of the divide in Scotland. Maybe Andy doesn't see much of it to feel that it's as nasty as it is. I was at a pub quiz on Wednesday in Carluke and a drunken arsehole loudly proclaimed that he was a "provo" and "up the 'ra" only to be quickly ejected from the premises followed by half a dozen locals ready to administer a beating to the clown. It went from semi-intellectual banter to outright bigotry in about 30 seconds flat. This is the stuff you and I and thousands of others see on a daily basis. It's sad and pathetic but it's reality for some. -
Good luck to him, he's a better player than most give him credit although as a defender he's not exactly solid. It just shows the lunacy of the game down there when a decent journeyman type player can earn £40k a week, no wonder he's sitting tight training with the kids.

Andy's written a superb evisceration of Speirs on TRS which should have the buffoon spitting feathers, which is always nice. I think his admission that he had never heard or heard of RoH up until now almost makes yours and others points about the whole sordid business though. If you are confronted with abject horror in your daily life, you tend to get a wee bit cynical about the "other side". I don't suppose Andy's confronted with much of the rhabid one's bile in the library at Glasgow Uni, unless of course Jean Findlay's in there holding a republican rally. -

Smells of estrogen in here. -
By Speirs's logic, paedophilia is legitimate because paedophiles think it is and if you are outraged about that you must be an anti-paedophilia bigot. Otherwise known as a decent human being. If you can swallow the bible I suppose you could swallow anything.

If I was the Celtic manager...
Juancornetto replied to The Real PapaBear's topic in General Football Chat
If he "enhances" his reputation any more, he'll be considered unemployable in football. Failing to win three trophies this season when his team has the biggest sporting, financial and association backed advantage in history will go down as a huge failure once the rhanbid hordes stop and think about it.- 11 replies

Scotland have thankfully now sanctioned Gay Marriage but that's only after overcoming the concerted campaign of the Catholic Church. It's spokesman in Scotland embarrassed himself publicly by claiming that a "homosexual lifestyle leads to early death".... Who know's, we may have had that equality long before now had pernicious groups like the RC's not had such an influence on our society. Secularism would have removed those barriers entirely and the decision to progress as a modern state and give everybody the same rights would have been purely political and representative of the vast majority of Scots feelings on the subject. Religion still has a huge influence on our society and that is what I as a secularist will continue to argue against. I don't mean to single out Catholicism by the way, they just make it so easy to argue against their particular narrow minded nonsense. -

Secularism means complete separation of religion and politics (and education). It's inaccurate to describe a country as secular when it's government are engaging with religious groups and leaders and allow those groups to influence policy which it clearly does in Scotland. -

Andy, I'm afraid while we have separate schooling for one (or more) religions in this country we cannot describe ourselves as Secular. The Catholic Church is still very politically active and wields a fair bit of power and influence, which is exactly why the SNP consult with it's leaders on a regular basis. -
