  7. Exclusive – Kyle Lafferty set to return to Rangers front line against Aberdeen Kyle Lafferty is set to make his first appearance of the season for Rangers against Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday, the same fixture in which he caused controversy by feigning injury and subsequently received a three-match ban from the Scottish FA. The Northern Ireland forward has returned to training after sustaining knee damage for his country against Poland in their World Cup qualifier earlier this month. He will not be risked for tomorrow’s Co-operative Insurance Cup tie at Queen of the South but could make the squad for the visit of Mark McGhee’s side. Lafferty was punished retrospectively by the SFA for the clash that led to Charlie Mulgrew being sent off for an alleged headbutt. After reviewing the incident, the referee Stuart Dougal, who has since retired, rescinded the original red card, while Lafferty was given a three-match ban for deceiving the official. Lafferty has played no part in Rangers’ season thus far but is likely to be given at least part of the game against Aberdeen to prove his fitness and put himself into contention for a starting place against Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season the following Saturday and for the Champions League Group G tie against Seville at home on September 29. Walter Smith, who is facing a four-match ban for being sent to the stand during Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, is also hoping to welcome back Maurice Edu and Kirk Broadfoot after the next international break. Edu, the USA international, underwent knee ligament surgery in the summer after sustaining the injury in the final game of last season, against Dundee United. The Rangers manager will organise a closed-doors game for the midfielder when Scotland are in Japan and hopes to have Edu and Broadfoot available in time for Rangers’ third Champions League group game against Unirea Urziceni at Ibrox on October 20. Broadfoot is in the middle of a rehabilitation programme after he underwent surgery on a foot injury. He was in plaster for three months but is now working on his own at Murray Park to return to full fitness. The SFA confirmed Smith faces a four-match touchline ban if found guilty of misconduct. The Rangers manager was furious at he what he believed was a deliberate attempt by Manuel Pascali, Kilmarnock’s Italian midfielder, to get Pedro Mendes sent off. Smith, who spends most of his match day in the stand in any case, later apologised to the referee, Steve Conroy, for his behaviour but will receive an automatic two-match ban and could have it doubled for a previous misconduct charge – he was suspended for two games after being sent off in a Scottish Cup game against Hibernian in March 2008. If found guilty, Smith will miss the Old Firm derby and games against St Johnstone and Hibs. If Rangers beat Queen of the South he will miss the quarter-final. http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/spl/rangers/exclusive-kyle-lafferty-set-to-return-to-rangers-front-line-against-aberdeen-1.921349

  10. Nice gesture from Hibs............ ------------------ Hibernian is donating free adult and child season ticket memberships to the families of servicemen with 3rd Battalion, 3 RIFLES based at Redford Barracks. Set to benefit the family members who remain at home whilst loved ones are serving their country, the tickets will offer SPL and Cup action live at Easter Road Stadium. The donation of tickets officially recognises the developing relationship between the Club and Redford Barracks. Today, the Hibernian Ladies and Girls squads now train on the all-weather pitches at the Barracks twice-weekly under the guidance of Hibernian coaches. Capt Craig McBurney, 3 Rifles, said: "This is a fantastic gesture of support from Hibernian Football Club. The soldiers and their families are delighted with the donation and really appreciate it. At time when the 3 Rifles are about to be deployed to Afghanistan on a seven month campaign, this news could not have come at a better time for Mums looking to entertain kids at weekends. Everyone is looking forward to the prospect of seeing John Hughes' team live at Easter Road." A Hibernian spokesperson said: "We hope that the donation of season tickets helps in a small way to show our appreciation for the developing relationship with military staff at the Redford Barracks and of the efforts of the 3 Rifles. The bravery and professionalism of the servicemen is something which we should all take pride in and we look forward to welcoming their families at Easter Road."
  11. Scotland's National Cup Competition will be known as The Active Nation Scottish Cup. The new Active Nation brand, a key element of the Scottish Governmentââ?¬â?¢s plan to get Scots to lead healthier lives, was launched at Glasgowââ?¬â?¢s All Saints Secondary School today. The branding was unveiled by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Shona Robison, Minister for Public Health and Sport, alongside Gordon Smith, Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association and pupils from the school. The Active Nation campaign is part of the Ã?£23.5 million planned investment in A Games Legacy for Scotland, the plan to ensure everyone across the country benefits from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Cup will support the drive to improve the countryââ?¬â?¢s health by encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get involved in physical activity. The Active Nation Scottish Cup is the oldest national footballing trophy in the world and celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. Unveiling the new brand Ms Sturgeon said: ââ?¬Å?We want to encourage people to make lasting lifestyle changes which will improve their health, their familyââ?¬â?¢s health and the countryââ?¬â?¢s health. ââ?¬Å?Football is a catalyst for raising the awareness of the changes families and communities can make, from walking to games, eating healthier, kickabouts in the garden to on the pitch itself. ââ?¬Å?The Active Nation Scottish Cup offers the perfect platform to get more people thinking about their health and making changes that will benefit them in the future. Getting the country active will result in a legacy that Scotland can truly be proud of.ââ?¬Â Scottish FA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said: "The Scottish Cup is one of the most famous football tournaments in the world. Over the years it has inspired generations of Scots to take up the game and, in turn, to live a healthier lifestyle. "I have always believed that we should be using the positive aspects of football to give future generations of Scots the confidence to succeed and the determination to be all they can be. "We all want our children to be fitter, healthier and happier. This year's Active Nation Scottish Cup will not just be a fantastic competition, it will be also be a part of the campaign to change lives and to make our country a better place. "We are delighted that our partnership with the Scottish Government and Willie Haughey is continuing for another year. I really do believe that by working together, we can make significant and lasting changes to our national game and our country." http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/scottish_fa_news.cfm?page=142&newsID=5053
  12. Bryson defends Mendes Kilmarnock midfielder Craig Bryson does not think Rangers' Pedro Mendes should have been sent off at the weekend. Mendes saw red after being booked twice by referee Steve Conroy for two challenges on Bryson. But Bryson has now leapt to the defence of the Portuguese midfielder. "I got to the ball before him and he did kick me, but it was his first tackle of the game and when I saw the yellow card come out at the time I have to say that I did think it was a bit harsh," said Bryson. "Then for the second one it was the same situation. I got to the ball first and I was really just trying to get myself out the way of the tackle. "If I had stayed standing then I would have got hurt, but I did think that the boy had two tackles in the whole game and he was sent off so I definitely think it was a bit harsh, as was Manuel Pascali's. "It seemed a bit much for both of them. I don't think that there were any real bad tackles in the game and there seemed to be cards being shown all the time. "I definitely thought the red cards were harsh on both players because I didn't think there was any real intent to do damage." Rangers boss Walter Smith is himself facing a four-game touchline ban after he was sent to the stands following Mendes' dismissal. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11781_5574097,00.html
  13. It would be a much better appointment that the likes of Pressley, Butcher.
  14. mendes only made 2 tackles (not like him to make that many), neither was a bad one but the ref of course seen it totally different, and then just booked players for soft challenges the rest of the game. Ruined the game and if this is the way forward then it's not going to be great to watch for fans as Davie Weir says. the likes of stuart mccall, ian ferguson would be sent of every week under these poofy rules.......... do you think this is why davis doesn't tackle anybody fans will be better of getting a membership for the WRC and stop going to the games
  15. Celtic are no better and have stuggled to beat Hibs away, lucky to beat Hearts at home yesterday and drew with Dundee Utd also at home. We need to show more especially away from home where we have created next to nothing even if the other teams are playing for a draw and timewasting it's up to us to take the game to them. The lack of commitment and attitude in these games from most of the players had been pretty bad and there seems no urgency whatsoever. We sign a left midfielder Rothen and play him mainly on the right. I'd rather play a youngster than have McCulloch at he back. Davis is either very good or rotten. Mendes has done nothing this season so far, not any better than Barry IMO. Miller has no confidence and the system being played is no use for Boyd. Naismith has been good but was quiet against Killie. Fleck was poor at the weekend but I would play him more at home and give him more games first. Papac is consistantly good, along with Weir and Boogie. Whittaker has been good but still makes simple mistakes at the back and needs to improve his passing. Why can't we play down the wings?
  16. 2-1 for the scum unreal
  17. been a decent game with both sides creating chances, hearts should've beenup 3-0 in the first half from what i seen, although selik have had decent chances in the 2nd half......hearts are certainly not there to make up the numbers or defend , they should've had a penalty few mins ago as well, wallace brought down in the box.........
