  1. We were awful in any European game for 2 seasons (95-97) when we shouldn't have been. Walter played 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 in these games with Craig Moore in midfield.
  2. Watching Bayern and Arsenal this week play some top football got me thinking who is the best side I have seen AT a game. Obviously we've all seen the best sides on TV but who were the best at an actual match. I think the best side I can recall was Valencia in 1999-2000 at Ibrox. That era we played Parma, Bayern and PSV off the park at Ibrox but Valencia was a different class. They went onto the CL final that season and the following year plus won La Liga.
  3. Bayern have been the best around for 2 full seasons and are carrying it into a 3rd. How they lost that CL final to Chelsea was beyond belief. But as a great team they came back and won it last season. They will take some stopping this season.
  4. Biased and negative? Would these be wrong?? We could say some were biased towards him. If you take Ferguson as a whole then he was a cracking but in different player. In his spell 1999-2003 he was brilliant, an absolute intergral part of the team. After that....it was all about him on occasions when it shouldn't have been....that alone says a lot. He ruined the team on many occasions.
  5. I don't know what he is doing admitting he wants to change things, why would you change it when they are the champions. It shows how good Sir Alex was, he was like a 12th man. Looking back at the great Liverpool team in the 70s and 80s, they only failed to finish outside the top 2 once in 18 years and won most leagues along with cups domestic and in Europe. The difference was that team had a change of manager 4 times yet was still successful with a change (Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish). I know its early to judge Man Utd and Moyes but they don't look good.
  6. Shocking results for the Manchester clubs
  7. Just as I type that, Chelsea turn it up and score and now look the better team
  8. 1st half started ok but 2nd half has been a cracking game. Tottenham just look the stronger side and could be the real deal this season. Great comment saw earlier: 'they sold Elvis and bought the Beatles'. Sums it up nicely bout selling Bale and buying those players in the summer.
  9. I will go 3-0. Stenhousemuir might turn out to be our toughest opposition in the league so far this season though as they are going well in the league.
  10. Really looking forward to this game. Don't have much like for either side is one reason. I think it will be the best game of the season so far, you always get a good atmosphere at White Hart Lane and with a tight ground the game is usually quick pace. Going for 2-1 Spurs. Swansea v Arsenal later should also be a good footballing game, 1-2 Arsenal.
  11. There is no way halfing costs would double attendances but I'm sure they would rise
  12. What about the training schedule Barry? We're you ok with that? And did you wise up before the Scotland booze scandal? no.... Regardless of how much we all want Rangers to win, he went against the manager who may have been building things...right or wrong, he should have respected his manager and he proved he couldn't. How is a new era going to be build when its fighting against an old one. Sorry Barry, I don't buy it....we all want Rangers to win but not your style. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned John Brown, and we have all seen how embarrassing he is. Imagine Frank Lampard coming out with something like this Pickled Onion Crisps
  13. Kenny Miller is the new Robbie Fowler, he's linked every day.
  14. I thought Zaliukas would have been a good signing. Never mind, his loss!
  15. Wouldn't say he was a legend in a playing sense but he has been heart and soul of the dressing room and helped lead from the front in the last 18 months and will go down as a legend for those reasons.
  16. Moyes really needed that!! Their next 5 games in the league are very winnable so if he picks up 12-15 points the pressure is off a bit.
  17. 26 quid for the SPL? No wonder the game is dying. Take a leaf out of the German book and attendances might go up which means more overall income, better atmosphere and maybe a better product.

    Scottish Cup

We thought that last season but Inverness certain did this!
  19. Gus Poyet is the favourite. Would be interesting to see how he does in the top flight. Out of the other contenders I think Tony Pulis would keep them up although Im sure the Sunderland fans wouldn't be excited by the prospect of Pulis. Zola and Di Matteo would steady things and it would help with the Italian background to get on with staff and the few Italian players they have. Big Eck would inject good morale but I would still see them in a relegation fight.
  20. Following on from a thread in Footie chat about Morton knocking Celtic out the league cup, I thought had we still been in the competition then the trophy would be there for the taken. But my comment was Id still be happy to settle for a League One and Ramsden's Cup double. It got me thinking about the Scottish Cup. Oh yes I'd love to win that but are we ready to compete with the SPL sides? On paper we are. I wouldn't be swapping our squad for any in the SPL right now including Celtics as I think we have the basis of a good squad to compete. Add in a few quality signings when we are back to the SPL then Id say we will be top 2 for sure. It boils again down to our style of play and management ability as to how good we can be, as last season we were easily beaten by Inverness and Dundee Utd. But we are probably far more prepared this season. As we are more prepared with a stronger squad that have had a full pre-season: What is our realistic expectations in the Scottish Cup? Of course the luck of the draw will always come into it. Are some fans still wanting to boycott it in protest towards the SFA and anti-Rangers SPL clubs? I know I could understand that point of view. Does anyone want to avoid playing an SPL side yet in case a) we get turned over and b) assist in financing them? The jury is still out for me. I don't want to return to Tannadice nor head for Pittodrie to satisfy the vile hatred from elements of those places. But if we were to draw Ross County or Kilmarnock I'd take that right now as a) it would be a good test and b) I think we could beat those. I do think the sticky balls will be in play this season and we will get Celtic.
  21. Makes you think though had we got through our League cup tie then the cup could have been there for the taking!!! I'll settle for a double this season with League one title and Ramsdens. RE the Scottish cup, it would be interesting to have a thread about that, and I'll start it now.
  22. This one is dragging on a bit, either he wants to join or he doesn't.
  23. I hope its not true. Why would you slag a minor team who are one of around 15 clubs who have made Rangers feel welcome while in the low leagues. I could expect it from a 17 year old ned but not someone supposed to be mature. Aside from this point in order to make the Scottish league better I always thought Forfar should join with Arbroath, Brechin and Montrose to become Angus Utd. The 4 teams are all within a 15 mile radius and it would make sense.
  24. It must be something in the north east in general. There is never shortage of drama and all 3 clubs have been in messes. Middleboro seemed the most sensible out of the 3 at one point and were a good established Premier League team for a while but they are really poor at the moment in the Championship. Newcastle are a soap opera. Sunderland have a terrific set up and one of the best stadiums in the country, but any manager who goes there cant make them a decent team never mind a force despite being backed financially. Only 7th placed finishes by Peter Reid where they once decent. Admin - please move this to the thread already started in football chat.
  25. They should never have sacked Steve Bruce before O Neill. Very early but obviously to do with his style and man-management. He shouldn't be criticising him players in public after signing 14 players in the summer...and then walking over to the fans and giving them the chin up, whats he thinking! Di Matteo and Big Alex McLeish are the leading favourites. No doubt Big Eck would give the players a good confidence lift as he is a good man manager like that, but he would need someone who knows tactics. Di Matteo did Ok with West Brom, nothing more but then he won the CL with Chelsea! Jury would be out with him. Sunderlands next 3 fixtures: Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle.
