Yeah but that was after he realised he wasn't getting the Man U job. After one Real game he practically handed his CV to Geoff Shreaves.

Perhaps 8 months ago Id have thought that this would be an interesting option. But anyone who lies down to Doncaster when he had the better hand of cards is a no-no for me. He showed weakness during the SPL / SPL "merger" (invaded takeover).

Barry Ferguson - Racism In Football - Mark Walters
Gribz replied to chilledbear's topic in Rangers Chat
Once again its a social problem and not a footballing one. Humans aren't born racist, its installed in them. I would like to believe every decent football fan wouldn't even consider the thought of thinking that someone was different because of the colour of skin. It is one issue I have never been able to understand or accept and makes my blood boil. Its like saying a black Ferrari is different to a red Ferrari in aspects other than appearance. Unfortunately FIFA and UEFA aren't strong enough on it, in fact they are embarrassing themselves not taking stronger action a long time ago. Them not doing anything says a lot to me. IMO all clubs who have so called fans in the ground in this day in action mocking someone for a colour should be instantly removed from that competition. In this case Yaya Toure is spot on saying black players should boycott Russia 2018 World Cup. Russia should be told they risk losing hosting the tournament if their is an issue.- 27 replies

Pretty good side, have done well in qualifying and being in South American will suit them better. Under Eriksson, Capello and now Hodgson I don't think anyone fears England at all, they are so flat its unbelievable and play players due to their name rather than their form. If Redknapp was in charge we'd see an attacking England that would be dangerous. They should have went for him short term with Hodgson taking over all the FA off field stuff to build for the future.

Pretty interesting odds going at this early stage. I quite fancy Argentina or Germany to win it but Spain cant be ruled out even though this fantastic group are now ageing. Holland at 16/1 Is a tempting bet. Uruguay at 33/1 is worth a fiver. That odds will slash once they qualify (they should beat Jordan easily). Brazil 10/3 Argentina 9/2 Germany 9/2 Spain 11/2 Belgium 14/1 Holland 16/1 Columbia 20/1 Italy 20/1 England 22/1 France 33/1 Uruguay 33/1

I quite like Rafa and think he is good. He did well with Valencia breaking the Barca / Real dominance, then took Liverpool to two CL finals - winning one of them. He finished 2nd in the PL with them also. I think he did a good job with Chelsea last season with everyone against him, and this season his Napoli side are title contenders.
-
I think he does say they are now friends, but cant see him giving them credit. He avoids the pizza throwing debate saying he doesn't know who did it. Its Benitez he slates in the book.

Wenger changed the Premier league. He was years ahead with what he did at Arsenal and that's why they were successful from 98-2005. Teams caught up although they spent silly money to do so while Arsenal remain in the black and should now have a very good few seasons infront of them. I always said that Wenger has hindsight! Ferguson was the last of the old school. He joins Shankly, Stein, Paisley, Busby and Clough that group. Im sure he will be on TV as a pundit sometimes giving his views and cant see him making a clown of himself at all, he is very clever and everything he says is always thought of first.

Yeah that is a good team on paper. But it goes back to the case where we played individuals rather than as a team like in 92-93 and in Advocaats first 2 seasons. He obviously played this: _____________________Goram_____________________ ______McPherson___Gough____Boli_____________ Laudrup____Ferguson___McCall_____Robertson ____________________Durie____________________ _____________Ferguson____Hateley___________ When a more effective team IMO would have been a 4-4-2 below. I know Durie isn't a left midfielder but he could go down the left channel. I remember his first season in 1994 against Kilmarnock in a cup semi final where he played there and did well setting up 2 goals. ____________________Goram_____________________ McPherson_____Gough____Boli______Robertson Laudrup______Ferguson___McCall____Durie____ _______________Ferguson_____Hateley_________

Im looking forward to reading it for the entertainment if nothing else. Not sure if he has another book in the past with more of his younger days but Id like to read about that also. Should be some good bits about Keane, Rooney and players like Bosnich. He called the latter a terrible professional who ate like a horse before a game to Wimbledon.

I thought that also while watching the game live, looked like it had just went behind him. Hard to tell. Id still take Kasami's all day long.

Scott Nisbet was part of the 92-93 side that got to the semi finals, he scored against Marseille at Ibrox in the 2-2. But looking at our squad off the top of my head from the mid 90s (1993-97 to be more specific) under Walter: Keepers: Goram Maxwell Snelders Thompson Niemi Defenders: Gough Petric Brown Pressley Boli McPherson Stevens Roberston Moore (but played midfield) Cleland Porrini Bollan Bjorkland Midfielders: I Ferguson McInnes Gascoigne Durrant Steven Murray Miller (Charlie) Huistra Mikhailichencko McCall Gattuso Laudrup Van Vossen Albertz Forwards: McCoist Hateley Durie Bo Andersen Ferguson (Duncan) McSwegan Negri Salenko

Im with Pete even if Im not on the sauce. I haven't been keeping up to date on a lot of the off field stuff for reasons but when reading about Stockbridge - a guy I wouldn't know if he was having a cup of tea next to me - receiving 200k as a football bonus for the team winning Div 3 got me wound up also.

Yep, we should have had a proper mix to beat those sides. The confident Scottish spine of Goram, Gough, I Ferguson, McCoist should have been blended much better with the foreigners. I remember watching a re-run of a game not so long ago with a 3-5-2 in Europe. Both Cleland and Moore were in the midfield. Fair play to Dick Advocaat for realising how good a centre half Moore was. He should have been lining up next to Gough on many occasions before moving to Palace.

Didn't Spain play it just before Scotland when Villa and Torres were both injured so the played 4-6-0 with Fabregas being the furthest forward. Obviously it worked a treat for them. Levein trying it was a joke. West Ham shocked Spurs with 4-6-0 against Spurs and winning 3-0 but it was a one-off and Allardyce should have realised that, but he tried it against Man City and it back fired. If you have 2 or 3 pacey wide players then it can work especially on the counter.

^ That is a wonder strike!

Is it fair to say we never got the best out of quite a number of quality players (not quite world class). This may be due to a few reasons like they were winding down their career, couldn't adapt to Scottish style of play and many more. We had a pretty good record at signing players with pedigree who had success at World cup and European level. To name a few: Kuznetzov - A lot been said already Van Vossen - I remember him coming with big reputation but other than a few glimpses he failed to impress. Salenko - Scored 5 goals in 1 game at the world cup. Porrini - A champions league winner with Juventus who were a cracking side. He didn't have a bad Rangers career, just not spectacular. (played RB a lot rather than CH) Boli - Another CL winner who didn't last long. Rosental - Was hot property in South America and getting into the Chile side with Salas and Zameramo both who were cracking. Obviously injury was his downfall. I remember being at the game he got injured against St Johnstone, he just jumped for a header and his studs got stuck in the turf. Such an unlucky one. Prodan - Never kicked a ball. Thern - Was cracking for Sweden and captained them to the WC 94 semi's. But looked well out of place for us. Thinking back we probably under achieved in Europe for a few seasons considering the players we had, money that was spend. For a few seasons we were shocking in Europe losing against teams like AEK Athens, Rosenburg and Copenhagen when we should have been beating teams like that.

Fulham's first strike against Palace, easily goal of the season, I cant imagine a better goal than that will be scored. It was better than Van Persie's from last season. It is up there with the very best. If that was Rooney doing that they would be talking about it as the best goal the premier league has seen. And their second by Sidwell wasn't a bad effort either! No sound but you don't need any. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMYXFh8TFtQ

Paid as employee to do what though? Any job descriptions?

I still need confirmation on what Jim Traynor is doing apart from living a journalists dream being on the inside for the biggest soap opera of the decade. I had decent hopes for him too.

Don't know how many times I can get 4 out of 5 on the accumulator. On Saturday I had: Arsenal easy win Chelsea easy win Reading easy win Leicester win Blackburn at home to lowly Charlton - lost!
-
I always have had a thought that the formation should be balanced out over the pitch, 3-4-3 being the most obvious. Wigan showed in spells last season that when playing it right its effective.

This was going to be my next post, if you are a top European player you are pretty much world class as its the Europeans and South Americans who have mainly graced the game and have the top leagues and standard of player. I think another way to split it is whether you play at top club level (European competition) or on the World Stage. Because 'world class' players such as Giggs and Best never got to do it on the international stage so that makes them certainly top European quality. I take your point on Ferguson and he did do more for Rangers but if we are talking quality overall then Gio did it at higher levels. A good question would be, if they were both at their pomp right now who would you take in the team first? Gio did also play a lot on the left side of midfield (more an inside left) but he isn't going to be able to shift Laudrup or Cooper from the wide slots.

This option seems to have gone for me except my last post. So if I want to edit a previous post I cant.

I cant believe I left out R De Boer, not sure how on earth I managed that one. I guess I was going 4-4-2 and when reaching the strikers I was looking for 2 forwards. But I would edit the team and put De Boer in for Prso. I couldn't put Baxter in as I was basing it on players I have seen. But Im sure an older bear could list an XI with the class players from 60s and 70s. I like the idea of the category of European Class and admit it would take the 7/11 down. Albertz is a funny one. One of my all time favourites but couldn't get a mention, he was certainly one of our better performers. Reyna was a fine player but wouldn't make it for me. Tugay and Kanchelskis certainly would be european quality players. Going into that category Jonas Thern was a fine player, he captained Sweden to 3rd at WC 94, but he was past his best when coming to Rangers.
