  1. Ian Durrant targets further defensive reinforcements at Rangers The Rangers assistant manager knows that the side need to strengthen their defence, after conceding 27 goals last season, and that is where the priority will be for new signings. Durrant's side have already added Nicky Law, Cammy Bell, Nicky Clark and Jon Daly to their ranks, while Arnold Peralta and Stevie Smith are expected to be added to the squad. While progress has been made on summer recruitment, Durrant believes that more new faces must be added in the coming weeks. He said: "We've got three or four that we need. We know for a fact we need some defenders in so in the next week or two weeks we'll be doing the rounds about Europe and scouring the lower leagues in England for a centre-half and a right-back to come in and play at Rangers. "It's just a case of looking just now. The CVs will be coming in next week and also what players we can contractually get in touch with because of the transfer embargo. "We'll have a wee look next week and hopefully we can come up with a few surprises." Meanwhile, Durrant has revealed that Dorin Goian, who is currently on loan at Spezia Calcio in Italy's Serie B, wishes to return to Romania next season. The future of Carlos Bocanegra is less clear, although Durrant is mindful that Jurgen Klinsmann has suggested the player would have to leave Ibrox for the good of his international career. 2. Walter Smith hopes to bring about stability Smith replaced Malcolm Murray in the latest boardroom shuffle at Ibrox, with the latter remaining at the club as a non-executive director. And the move completes a dramatic year for Smith, who was part of a consortium which failed to buy the assets of Rangers after they entered the liquidation process in June 2012. The 65-year-old was then appointed as a non-executive director by Charles Green, who stepped down from his role as chief executive at the Third Division club in April after allegations of involvement with former Rangers owner Craig Whyte. Green was cleared by an independent inquiry carried out on behalf of the Ibrox club, and remains majority shareholder in Rangers. Smith said: "Unity among the directors is vital. We must all be on the same page as often as possible. "We won't always agree but Rangers, this club and our fans must always come first. It's a great honour to be asked to take up this position. "However, no one should believe that I see my role as a passive one. That hasn't been my way in the past and it won't be my way in the future." http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/8744317/?

  13. Sheffield Wednesday are to play Scottish giant Rangers in a showpiece pre-season friendly at Hillsborough. The match will take place on Wednesday, July 24, kick-off 7.45pm, and will be the Owlsâ?? sole home warm=up for the new season. Wednesday are set to confirm the date officially after previously announcing friendlies against Hull, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe. The Owls expect a following of thousands from Scotland, and it will be a special affair for midfield player Rhys McCabe. Not only are Rangers the club that he left to join Wednesday amid some controversy but also the game will fall on his 21st birthday. â??Good timing on my birthday,â? he has said on Twitter. McCabe will also be hoping to use the pre-season programme to force his way into the side for the Championship kick-off on August 3. He missed out on a full pre-season last year because of the formalities surrounding his move. He opted not to transfer his Ibrox contract to the new Rangers company and signed for Wednesday instead. The clubs later agreed on a compensation deal. McCabe tasted Championship action earlier than Dave Jones had expected, when the midfield department was hit by injury. Athough he did not hold down a regular place the young Scot is confident of progress next season. Rangers began life in the Scottish Third Division after their financial crisis and rebirth. They won the title last season by a margin of 24 points and with an average attendance of 45,744. http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/sheffield-wednesday/sheffield-wednesday-owls-to-play-rangers-1-5721459 Great to see the football side of things are being taken care of what with the recent signings and now this.
