Here's another thought there's a thread on FF discussing Rangers moving more towards the european/American general manager style, thereby taking the buying and selling of players out of the head coaches hands. With that the club buys the players it thinks it needs and tells the coach to get the best out of them. You then have some continuity within the club and aren't subject to the whim of a manager who might make a total balls of it leaving you an unholy mess to clean up.

I would not be in favour of that, it would open a whole can of worms.

Mendes cost us more to buy than Edu and we sold him for just over £1m with a season and a half left on his contract (the same as Edu has left). Slightly different of course because of the age Mendes was at when we sold (sell now or get very little a year later), but we could also say that Mendes was a far better football player than Edu.

 

Anyway, regarding Edu, I'm almost certain that nobody will offer us what we paid for him.

Yeah but we wanted him off the wage bill and the bank ran the show, was annoyed about the price we got though. Different circumstances with both age and and who is running us currently.

Because as I said before it would be stupid business sense, to entertain bids below what we paid is financially bad and I see some people say £1m pounds and he should go, not for me. I would like to see all players go for face value if we are going to sell our players. We have invested more in the player with wages as well and just to say thanks £1m is brilliant, just no.

No, I think he was on less than £7.5k a week before he joined. His basic wont change unless there was a clause for a substantial increase, but if that did happen it would have pissed off a fair number of his team mates if he was earning more than them. Plus he would have been sold if he was on that sort of high wage of £10k to £12k, didn't a English team last season look into him?

I'd have thought we'd have paid him roughly £10k to £12k a week when he first signed, but I could be wrong. There's also the chance that he's had a wage increase since then? So what do we all think Edu might be earning per week now?

£10k-£12k , I hope not, might add up to £10k a week in total package of appearance bonus and such like but basic I'm not sure it would be very high about £7.5k a week.

How many weeks in the year do you think we pay our players? For example, if we've got a player who's contract runs out summer 2013 how many weeks wages would you use to calculate what they're due to get paid for the remainder of their stay? 60 weeks wages or something? 18 for the rest of this season and say 42 for next season? Just trying to get a rough idea. It doesn't need to be 100% accurate.

Roughly 65 weeks wages but they probably get paid all the time.

I can't understand why they want him so much. Do they just see 'ever present US international' and assume he's the ghost of Essien?

Of course he would play for them, he would probably double his wages even if they are a provincial French side. I doubt he would be on a high wage with us since coming from America an unproven player.

They're offering peanuts, and well below what we paid. They're trying to take advantage of the situation they think we're in which lost us Miller for only £450k.

 

If they are this desperate for Edu, they really need to bid a lot higher.

They are desperate, he is apparently their number 1 target and they are bottom of the French Ligue 1.

They probably think he only has 6 months left, probably have no idea we have a new owner. Although Charlie Davies, Edu's mate is there I believe and probably need Edu to settle him, Davies was on loan at DC.

Wonder how significantly increased their bid was £550k?

Nah seriously probably £1m touted but yeah don't think that is anywhere near what we want.

Probably both would have to agree to extend it, or certain criteria is met and it gets automatically extended.

Must do better is my opinion, average pre-season, poor European campaign, poor CIS cup campaign flattered to deceive in most league matches and lost a significant lead. We seem to be getting ourselves back together in the past couple of matches.

Tbh I thought Papac wanted to go at the end of last season. I also thought we had a 2 year option with Aluko why not take it up now? Although if we take it up he might get injured, straight away

Porto and the other Portuguese teams don't need work permits, same for all the countries bar the UK with South Americans so can use the loophole, plus they have nicer weather, hardly a crime if I am honest. Porto will never get 83 million euros for Hulk, some teams put in insane release clauses to try and ward off people, although they did sell Falcao for 47 million Euros.

Game will be live I could see it as second choice to the tims away game which means BBC.

Hmmm, not sure the guy will adapt, 29 and coming to a new country is a risk. I am all for scouring the leagues but preferably people who can adapt Spaniards struggle bar Cuellar and Novo but Novo had been living here for a few years anyway, there is probably others as well.

Does seem like a bit of a meh signing, if it happens, not really enthused by it.

Edu isn't worth anywhere near what we paid for him. We only got about a million for Ferguson and half a million for Adam (not counting the sell-on cash), so thinking we can get our £2.6m back for Edu is delusional. Getting a million would actually be pretty decent business if anyone is willing to pay that much for him.

For me it would be bad business. Whether he is worth it or not we have to run the club sensibly and £2.5m/£2.6m is where he should be valued currently.

I know he doesn't need to go now and can wait until the summer, but I think UTD want to sell him now and obviously get as much money as possible, so they will pushing for the WBA deal to go through and brainwash the boy like they did with Goodwillie to not sign for us.

This is true, however they have also frozen him out because he wouldn't sign a contract with them. However as long as big bad Rangers don't get him then thats ok with Dundee Utd.

Harsh on Edu, but Sochaux are willing to stretch to £1m for their top target so they need to move on.

We can sign him on a pre-contract if necessary and goto tribunal and his fee would be less than £50k-£100k.
