  1. I'm not reading into this chain of events. It's likely that Bain and Smith are simply answering questions put to them in interviews rather than cunningly releasing information to market the player. Having said that, I can't see them refusing an offer of £5m or more should one come in.

Although he has great potential I wouldn't turn down £5m+ either but that money would be needed to invest in the squad.

However I think EPL teams are trying to get a cheap deal and the media reporting constantly of our financial troubles, plus he has a year and a bit on his contract left.

  2. To be clear, I can understand the club being reluctant to spend much money if the only cash that comes in is the CL money. The debt needs to decrease and no CL money in future years would stop that happening.

As such there is an impasse of sorts - do we spend (say £3-5million) on two new players to ensure we win the 2010/11 title or is that too risky? Fair enough, that isn't easy to answer.

However, my point is that if a Bougherra leaves for upwards of £6million, then when one adds that to the CL money, surely there will be funds for the manager? More so if other players leave and/or the wage bill is reduced further.

All in all, there is a challenge there and fans need to be realistic in our expectations. However, by the same token, when asked to part with our money again we need to be aware of how our money will be used and what the future will be.

If so many players leave during the summer we will only have about 16/17 players excluding the so called sales of Bougherra, Davis, Wilson and Mcgregor. There needs to be canny signings mostly bosmans/free transfers/loans with an odd £2m spent on players that can add something to the squad. Not a player who will sit on the bench as we can't afford to spend on players now to sit on the bench.

Of course money might not be available but we have to add something otherwise we will be very, very short of players and any injury crisis that happens means we would be lucky to have a full 11.

Just looking at the squad we would have a squad of 19 with 6 youth players excluding Fleck and Wilson. But I am also forgetting Velicka (who probably will be injured for a few more months) and Webster plus a few other players that are out on loan, but a few who are out on loan are also out of contract iirc.

  3. The commentators were discussing how Newcastle would be promoted if the score line at the city ground remained 0-0.

McCarthy, to demonstrate hwo much of a certainty Newcastle's promotion quipped, come on... how many points behind are Celtic...10. Sure any mhanks listening would have been sick hearing that. :spl:

Yeah I heard as well. It was a crap game though.

  4. Minimum release clauses are common but not all that common in the UK. Spanish football players all have to have release clauses in their contract. Cuellar followed suit here by putting a release clause on his contract with us.

As for young players getting release clauses it would be hard to judge their potential value and how good they can be.

  5. Also, FWIW, the Sheridan goal was included as an option for SKy Sports goal of the week competition. Now that does not absolve the keeper of blame, but if it was due to poor goalkeeping would they really have it as a potential goal of the week. Also bearing in mind the fact that Sky rarely bother themselves with what is going on up here.

I am pretty sure Bougherra 's Champions League goal against Stuttgart won the goal of the week.

  6. His performances for Birmingham beg the question; just why was he so ineffective and anonymous for Rangers last season? Ferguson and Mendes was an absolute shambles of a partnership yet he's looking outstanding with Lee Bowyer alongside him?

Less pressure? A bit like Charlie Adam although Adam was played out of position.

  7. We could have been so better if we didn't have so many draws at the start of the season. If we lose say 25 points this season that wont be bad. I would say if we get 85 points then that will be alright. However winning the league is all that matters for me at the moment.

  8. When PLG left we were struggling badly, were we third at that point? If he stayed if could have been another 3rd place which for us is awful, second is not better but to get 3rd 2 years in a row would have been a disaster. His signings barring one or two were also crap, finances weren't great either but we were still struggling from previous era's mainly the Advocaat one. I also felt PLG underestimated the league and thought he would walk it.

We need stability and not a complete over haul as that just leads to more problems.

So overhauls are bad, look at them before Mowbray left. I wouldn't say PLG was trying to completely overhaul the squad as he hadn't made enough signings but he did alienate the Scottish contingent and they know what it is like to play for us where as the foreign players didn't.

  9. I have heard rumours about him maybe going to us. However I have heard that he is quite a greedy player so not sure what to make of him. Don't really watch Dundee Utd enough to rate him although he has scored a few goals this season. Might be a replacement for Boyd... Don't know where we are getting the cash from though as I think he would still be under contract there.

  10. Aberdeen and?

Don't know how it would work as we would have played 17 at home and 16 away, after 33 games. But with the split its actually teams we have played away twice and once at home mostly. So we will be going away to another place for a third time this season and my bets are Tyncastle seeing as they played us at Ibrox 3 times. So it will be either Dundee Utd or Motherwell we should beat with the home matches left.

This is of course if Hearts make the split.

  11. Signing ex-Celtic players is my main problem. They are paid to be professional and loyal to a club, Burke and McCormack were also boyhood Celtic fans and they were decent enough.

However when resigning ex-celtic players if they aren't good enough for them then they certainly aren't good enough for us. Miller has been an exception but we rarely sign ex-celtic players.
