For me it should always be Davis and AN Other in central midfield, and even if we sold Mendes we still have two options for every spot
RM - Whittaker/Naismith/Novo/Beasley
LM - Novo/Beasley/Fleck/Naismith
DM - Edu/Thomson/McCulloch
CM - Davis/Fleck/Naismith
Compare that to defence or attack where we are so short of numbers
Think we'd need to have McCulloch, Edu, and Thomson all injured before Walter would consider partnering Davis and Mendes in the centre of midfield. Personally, and i know it may not be a popular opinion, i'd be happy to let Mendes go. Davis is younger and more consistent, not to mention totally wasted wide right
Personally i do like to see us play with Whittaker on the right wing and Broadfoot behind him. I much prefer Whittaker wide right than i do Davis, for example. My first choice midfield right now would be: Whittaker Davis McCulloch Novo
Don't think we need any more CM's (McArthur and Arfield) as we'll soon have Mendes, Davis, McCulloch, Edu, and Thomson fighting for 2 places, though Davo will sadly probably return to the right wing
As for Barr, i'm not really convinced. Let him join a bigger club than Falkirk and see how he progresses in the next 18 months.
In the final 2 months of last season Whittaker looked like he had the potential to be the next Hutton. Who remembers him running the entire length of the field, from one side of the pitch to the other, in the 1-1 draw at Hibs? But this season his defensive inability has been found out and he wasn't getting forward as much either
The standard of the SPL can be summed up by Rusty Anderson and Andy Webster being viewed as great defenders here around 2005/2006 yet moving to the Premiership and playing 5 matches between them
If Wilson moves to Tottenham he'll end up like Hutton or Kyle Naughton
And a move to Man Utd would be even worse unless they're as skint as rumours suggest and they can't afford long term replacements for Ferdinand and Vidic
The last Swiss defender Celtic signed was supposed to stroll the SPL and he was an utter bombscare. Funniest thing was that we were in talks to sign him after Boumsong left but Celtic gazzumped the deal
Of course talking about Stephane Henchoz
I can't imagine Kirk will be too hard to deal with. Of course he could probably get a move to a Championship outfit for more wages than we'll offer but it doesn't match the prestige of playing every week for Rangers. I like the big lad, so much more comfortable at right back than Whittaker
