Hopefully he gets a good run out 3 days before our first competitive match? That will just tire him. One match isn't going to do much to his match fitness other than tire him. Traveling halfway around the world isn't ideal but Bougherra is so superior to the rest of our squad that he can probably do whatever he wants and he'll still be the first name on the team sheet.
-
His goal record over his career is dreadful for such poor leagues. Another potential signing that leaves you scratching your head.

We have to speculate to accumulate. These drastic cutbacks are going to mean we have a squad worth sod all and there's a much higher chance we'll lose out on top spot and the CL qualification, which is required just to break even. For much of the last ten years, we've just been one shambles after another. Something we are really bad at is making profits on players . We make a LOSS on the vast majority of our signings. Murray is the route problem but a start would be to have a chief executive that can run the club efficiently and effectively. Buying Thomson for £2m and selling him for £2m just makes you want to bang your head against a wall. If we spend £2m on a young player they should be worth at least double 3 seasons later. Factor in his wages and we've actually made a loss. Again, Pedro Mendes signed for £3m and sold for £1.5m not long after. You think a player in the starting lineup for Portugal in the world cup is worth only £1.5m? Jesus, theres players in the conference probably worth more than that. When Smith first came in, he was given a good chunk of money to spend on players and other than Bougherra and Cuellar none of his signings are really worth anything. PS - Why reveal the amount of players we are going to sign? We seem to reveal some very odd things. Cousins minimum fee release clause being a recent one that springs to mind. Saying that we will sign players is enough.

If a championship club are interested in a player it means they are good enough ? You need your head checked. Craig Conway is a mediocre SPL player. There are top players out there for cheap if you look around eg Cuellar and Bougherra. We should be building a side able to look half decent in the Europa League if nothing else ffs. And there's plenty players who look great at shite spl teams then look awful as soon as they step up. See Ian Murray, Russell Anderson, Derek Riordan etc.

To not make a profit on a fairly young 1st team player highlights how dreadfully we are run.
-
He's only just turned 18. Weir is an old man and in England he'll likely play with a far superior central defender even at reserve level or the championship. How well covered are we at centre half? We will barely have a team at this rate. But you know what? I don't really give a fuck anymore. We know we have fuck all future and are on the brink of meltdown.
-
Couldn't give a fuck if he's 'Rangers to the core'. 6 goals in the last 3 seasons is abysmal.
-
Celtic are so pish at the moment that despite it being unclear if we'll even be capable of fielding 11 fit professional footballers, we still have a fairly good chance of winning the league.
-
If he goes to the premiership I'll be surprised if he hits anything close to double figures. that said, the premiership isn't what it used to be and there's a lot of pish strikers that do ok.
-
Wilson hasn't even had a full season properly in the first team so wanting a new challenge is a bit unlikely in his case. If he goes to Liverpool he won't get anywhere near the first team for several seasons and will likely spend the next seasons in the reserves or championship/league 1. I can't think thats a huge attraction right now. As far as I'm aware Wilson's being offered peanuts and that's why he wants to leave. We should be doing everything to get him a very good offer as not only is he a great player but he could make the club a fortune one day.

Has Lee Miller even scored a single goal for Boro? Only we would replace a 30 goal a season striker with someone who doesn't actually score. to be honest, is it wrong that I'm not even bothered anymore? Nothing surprises me or really annoys me anymore. I've spent years of moaning and going mental at the ongoings but its time to just go with the flow or give up. But what I will say is when we're not offering players like Boyd and Wilson enough money, where the fuck is the money for shite like Miller coming from?

Good point re: Murray. In the past 10 years how many times has Murray brought us close to financial destruction? And to think some people still think he's done a good job... Running a football club is about spending money prudently. Spend too much and you end up in debt. Spend too little and you end up with a terrible squad. We have constantly gone from one extreme the other under Murray. He might make money in other industries but he's been horrendous in this one. Clueless. And for all the money spent in his legacy we've always had an archaic infrastructure with horrendous scouting etc.

I reckon he'll go back to serie A and do pretty well. Wasn't the right job for him.
-
Brown is probably Celtic's only good player. Decent player in a shite side.
-
I remember he once seemed a better capture than Scott Brown. How wrong we were. I wouldn't be overly bothered about losing him, he's pretty average. It's another first team player though and we're going to have nobody left. Yet another player we spent quite a lot of money on and will recoup fuck all on.
-
A sorry state of affairs really. The legacy Murray will leave behind at the club is being unable to offer Broadfoot etc enough money and losing one of the best players in years (Wilson) for peanuts. And before anyone says 'it's the economy we're in', funny how Celtic don't seem to have been on the brink of banruptcy several times through the 00's. A disgrace really. And what's particularly pathetic is nobody really seems bothered. this has been coming for years.

Dick Advocaat built a side that outperformed some European heavyweights and had Mols not got injured things might have gone differently. We were also very unfortunate to get beat in the UEFA cup by a strong Feyenoord side that went on to win the competition. Ifs, buts and maybes perhaps but that side was sensational and Advocaat is a far superior manager to Smith. Maybe not when it comes to setting out a team to beat St Mirren on a rainy night but thats about it. It's not unrealistic to expect us to challenge for the last 16 most seasons in the CL because most clubs of our size across Europe do so. Celtic have twice managed to get there in recent seasons. Don't get your point about the 20 teams in England getting more when only 4 teams per season compete in the CL. The money the other Englishs sides have is irrelevant considering they have no involvement in this particular competition. England is a league that gets ridiciulous money. Teams in Portugal, Greece and Holland who have the last 16 several times in the past 10-15 years get a fraction of that in income. What's strange about saying foreign managers are superior? No english manager has ever won the premiership. England are forced to go for foreign managers now because there's a lack of choice at home. And Alex Ferguson is a bit of a one off. Moyes and Ferguson standout as two British managers that could be considered among the top in Europe but other than that the best managers are all abroad. They have more modern ideas, better culture and focus on technical football.
-
Christ, shows the abysmal quality of the SPL when some of those goals make goal of the season. Dargo and Maguire's goals standout as a bit special. There's some goals that I'd barely expect to be goal of the week there though. All McCourt's goal is missing is Benny Hill music in the background.
-
Just now isn't the best time to 'try something new' but when when/if we are financially secure again we should try it. Just because PLG didn't work doesn't mean the next foreign manager won't work. Foreign managers are light years ahead of UK managers.
-
And what about year after year of embarrassment
-
When Walter came in he spent a lot of money and we still never played half decent football
-
I'd suggest we do given how rotten the rest of the SPL currently is.
-
11 players and a few kids? Where on earth is that number coming from?
-
Such negative thinking but I guess that's what we've fallen to. I'm sure there's loads of decent young managers across Europe that would love a shot at a fairly big club playing in the champions league most seasons. And if it doesn't work (a la Le Guen), try someone else. We aren't going to progress under Walter.
-
Not long ago we were being embarrassed by teams like Unirea in Europe and the general consent was that we wanted shot of Walter but we were so skint that we may as well just keep him. Now a couple of trophies later he's God again. My opinion of Walter is exactly what it was a few months ago. He's a reliable, solid albeit old fashioned manager, good domestically but out of his depth in Europe. He came back to steady the ship and there's been several periods where it as been steadied only for us to go on a dodgy spell again. Walter has done everything he can do with the club and it's time to move on IMO. We need new ideas and I'd like to see us as a side that can play decent football and cause some problems to big teams in Europe. It doesn't take a fortune to build a half decent European side rather than one that just hopes for a 0-0 draw. Everyone is saying that this season is a fantastic achievement but Celtic are so abysmal that it would have been hard not to win it. It's the worst Celtic side I've ever seen by a mile. Time to move on and develop.
