Pretty hard not to. He has led us into meltdown...you know, like time after time then buggered off.

Scouts do not command high wages and could still easily be done in a fairly vast quantity. Plus you should know by now not to make fantasy type posts about a club with as an archaic infrastructure as ours. We have no vision or ambition. PS - Lets not forget that in the 00's we financially stablised ourselves 2 or 3 times only to fuck it up again. Smith spent too much money when he came back in on players that largely had little resale value. David Murray has almost killed this club one time too many. He can't run us in a cost effective way. We either spend far too much and go massively in debt or spend fuck all and end up with a shite, worthless squad that risks losing out on the CL money.

We've managed to sign a player for £4m because we just got rid of half our squad. Big wow. Over 10 players departed, total income £4m. BRAVO.

After McGregor dived, someone pushed him. If every little push was a red card we'd have no players left on the park. Lafferty should have been booked and no more. That said, Lafferty isn't someone I rate highly and I don't understand his inclusion. Massive waste of money. How many time has he played well wide on the left? Why does Smith constantly do things that don't work>
-
Very true. I don't want him to go, but at the same time I want to see us playing a 4-5-1/4-3-3 in the SPL and Europe this season and he wouldn't fit into this
-
The difference with the final is it wasn't a two legged affair. It was a one off match with no away goal to benefit anyone and a simple standoff. We should have thrown everything at them despite their vastly superior side. We played for penalties in a final ffs...I pity any neutral that watched that fucking, pathetic rancid match of football. Zenit barely even tried and walked it.

The main problem is David Murray and not Walter Smith. But let's not forget, even when bankrolled millions and millions Walter Smith was still time after time exposed in Europe and made little attempt to play attractive football. Other than a couple of seasons Europe has been epic fail after fail for Mr Smith.

"out of Europe twice before the nights got dark"

They were shite under Strachan. Just fluked it in Europe and had no opposition in the SPL -
I think anyone half decent can do well in the SPL tbh, it is a pish league. I remember when Frank De Boer joined us, he'd been abysmal in Turkey and couldn't hack it but here he walked through every game without breaking sweat. The likes of Capucho failed because they were finished. Lets not forget, Camaronesi isn't afraid of the odd meaty challenge or kick, playing in the Italian league.
-
People were basing their opinions on Rothen from seeing him play 5 years ago. Camaronesi was last season a regular for Juventus and Italy and not long ago one of the best midfielders in Europe. Camaronesi also made the world cup squad, something the likes of Villareal's Rossi did not manage. Of course I reckon this is more utter bullshit to make us seem ambitious a la Eidur Gudjohnsen
-
Reaching it was pretty pointless at the end of the day because we made no attempt to win it. I'd have rather lost 5-0 and gone down fighting that park the bus and make no attempt to fight for the game. And it was the biggest fluke getting there, much like when Greece won Euro 2004. Just packing the defence, hoping for the best and largely being carried by Cuellar. On to the champions league draw, we could have drawn a harder team in pot 1 as Man Utd aren't half as good as they were, but they'll still likely hammer us. Valencia is a horrible pot 2 team to get. Kills any chance of getting to the last 16, which should be a realistic minimum target every season for a club of our supposed size.
-
Did you ever see him play at his peak? Or are you a typical British football fan that passes judgements on Italian footballers despite not having a clue what they're talking about? Over 200 games for Juventus and nearly 60 caps speaks volumes. If we can get him and he's anywhere near the level he was, he'd be a great signing even for a season or 2. I find it highly ironic that at a time where we hardly have the best of squads people are scoffing at him. He was still in the Italy squad recently and would walk the SPL. That said, I think it is just paper talk. Weiss on one side and Camaronesi on the other seems a bit too good to be true.
-
Wouldn't work against any European opposition, Celtic or some sides away. Sometimes in the SPL the old firm could pick themselves and gub the opposition, such is the standard.
-
IF you play two out and out attacking players wide in a midfield 4, you need 2 holding players in the middle, or else any remotely decent side will rape you in midfield. Two attacking wide players in a 4-4-2 isn't that common anymore, despite it often working for us last season. Usually one wide player will be a less offensive player who can tuck in. If we are to play a midfield 4 it has to be Davis or Whittaker on the right IMO.

We have a bit of a problem in 2 of our (likely) best players being Jelavic and Beattie, who are both big out and out strikers and won't work together (it never does!). Luckily we have Miller and Naismith who will link up fine with either. Lafferty again is another big striker who will need supplemented by a different player. Another concern is Smith isn't afraid to defy logic and stick 2 big guys up front, even when it consistently doesn't work. He did it several times with Boyd and Lafferty and it always went badly. Personally I'd like us to play a 4-5-1/4-3-3 , which we can play both in Europe and the SPL. We will perform better in Europe if we stick to the same general side and shape week in week out IMO, players will know their roles. With the signing of Weiss this can really work and Naismith could play on the other side. I'm getting deja vu though, I've spent so much of Smith's tenure wanting to see 4-3-3 when we had seen Naismith, Cousin and Burke work well against Hibs (one of the few occasions of fast, attacking, short passing - the way we should play IMO). With 2 big strikers capable of playing on their own and a seemingly very talented winger signed, 4-3-3/4-5-1 becomes a good option, considering it;s what we will definitely play in Europe. The only way we have a hope in the CL of getting any minor success is if the side is ultra organised and everyone knows their role. 4-3-3 in the SPL, then a 4-5-1 in CL becoming a 4-3-3 on the counter. But a las, we can but dream

We have made good signings in the last week but as a whole he's done a shocking job during his time. We are horrendous at conducting transfers. Signings often are drawn out affairs and players often leave for nothing or nominal fees. As someone on here recently said, if someone like Charlie Adam played for Celtic he'd have gone for much more. I also think the PR of this club is awful. Whenever we are struggling financially we seem intent on letting everyone know about it. There's clubs in far worse financial positions than us who do their best to make money but do it behind the scenes. I believe that if we had played down our financial woes in the past 10 seasons, we would have had higher bids for players. If the media report stories of clubs close to folding and having 'a price for every player', you're going to attract derisory bids unless it's a standout like Hutton or Cuellar. We very rarely put up any resistance to selling players nor try to get more money. The list of players to leave the club in the past 10 years factoring in the total income would not make good reading.

I've never read too much into their being a huge conspiracy against Rangers in the media or elsewhere, every football club's fans believe that. Not denying we are often attacked, just not to maybe the level some would believe. Recently though, and I rarely read the papers, I've noticed the press constantly looking to talk up Celtic, even when they continue to fail. Recent articles in different newspapers have spoke of a parkhead revolution and quoting todays Daily Mail, "Neil Lennon hailed all-rounder Beram Kayal as the pick of his European stars". How can any such statement be written about a squad of unknown players who have just been embarrassed in the CL qualifiers and have only just beaten mediocre Europa League opposition? You can only just imagine if we were in such a position - it would be 'solid' or 'an improvement on previous embarrassment." The press can write what the hell they want. Only last season some papers were printing guff about Hinkel (correct me if I'm wrong) claiming the last old firm game would prove who was the best 'once and for all', and hinting that there was some justification in this, forgetting we had just controlled them the whole season. The irony is despite all this talk of Celtics big expenditure, we have at the last minute probably signed 3 players of vastly superior quality.
-
Maybe if British football had a more 'new age' approach, we wouldn't have to rely on foreign players and the international sides wouldn't constantly get horsed. British football fans, including many on here, live in the dark ages and don't understand the modern game.
-
Boro are going nowhere fast. Very average squad and manager. Kris Boyd will look a right tit next season when he finishes mid table in the championship.
-
Or maybe this 'small group' didn't have the eye to appreciate his talents. He was a quality player and a good example of a modern day holding player - making a hard job look easy. He didn't have to dive into any challenges because he relied on technique instead. It's a shame his career faded away but many players have lost it earlier than they should and it was probably a case of one knock too many. BTW - what he has done post-Rangers is irrelevant and proves or disproves nothing. He showed at Marseille and Rangers more than enough to demonstrate his undoubted talents.
-
The fact is we've been linked with the player and generated a little bit of excitement.
-
Credit to Dundee United for asking for such a high price tag for a mediocre player. Celtic and Hibs have also proven to be good at this in recent seasons - often getting good money for very limited talent. If only we could learn a thing or two. Unless we have a particularly outstanding player like Hutton or Cuellar we always get pish return for our players. Not making a profit on Kevin Thomson for example.
-
I'd be willing to spend this much only on a player of proven ability. He's only had 1 season of a high goals return in a very weak league.
-
Remember the days when transfers were done quietly and efficiently and not like an old lady haggling over a 10% discount on a return bus ticket to Montrose.
-
This is just a PR stunt. Much like when we supposedly tried to sign Claudio Pizarro, but couldn't match his wage demands, despite the fact we would have clearly known we couldn't afford him in the first place. Vintage Dodgy Dave - make a half hearted attempt to sign an older, big name to con the fans and press into thinking we still have some ambition.
