I'm surprised Forrest was allowed to be picked for Scotland with a sexual assault charge hanging over him. -
What's your point?

Frankly I'm hurt.

Alex Thomson: Rangers into administration on Wednesday-Question....
amms replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
I agree, but it would be naive to think it couldn't happen. Morality is fairly low down the list of priorities of football clubs and hedge funds in my experience. -

It wouldn't be acceptable to me either, I'm not advocating it just speculating how these 'rumours' come about. It wouldn't be his decision in the end though, always worth bearing in mind. -
Alex Thomson: Rangers into administration on Wednesday-Question....

They're never going to be open about something like that though, no business would be. I doubt supporters can ever be realistically consulted on something like that, it would be near impossible to run a business with that level of publicity. Reading between the lines I think Wallace is looking at it as an option, as he should. That doesn't mean it is likely or probable, but it being considered. It's a worry though, withholding season ticket money doesn't make it less likely, indeed the opposite, however continuing to fund our current owners might be even more dangerous. I wish I had the answer. -
Alex Thomson: Rangers into administration on Wednesday-Question....
amms replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
If the board have tasked Wallace with serious cost reduction it would be remiss of him not to consider administration. As unpalatable as that is for you and me there's a business case to be made for it. There's also a business case to be made for redundancies, letting players go, reducing other overheads, selling players or selling land. If he has to report to the board on the options the club has then admin is an option, it's an extreme one but it can't be discounted without being examined. If Wallace has spoken to accountants based on finding out what would be involved, the costs and the likely outcome then he's just doing his job. It neither means it's going to happen this week or it's ever going to happen. I'm no supporter of this board but it's clear we're broke, again, and that Wallace has been tasked with fixing that. I'm not sure Wallace is the person to blame here. -

Thanks for posting that RPB and raising it D'Art. It's not exactly Frost/Nixon is it? The word 'interview' does conjure up something more intimate and involved. I'm going to assume King has a PA or similar who deals with the thousands of people trying to reach him for myriad reasons and I'm going to assume that person is probably South African, or at least not Scottish. If that person receives an email purporting to be from a freelance journalist asking questions that he's more or less already answered elsewhere I can see why it might get a reply. I'd visions of him having flown that guy out to Stellenbosch for an exclusive over the finest Chardonnay. It's certainly not grounds to dismiss King's credibility. -

Sorry, again I ask, are you saying Dave King gave an interview to that guy with the unpronounceable Irish name? -

I take no interest in what Celtic bloggers say, are you saying he interviewed Dave King? -

This is the first aspect of this story that makes sense. For all Thomson loves to put the boot into us he didn't make this story up, someone else did. The allegations about meeting and choosing an administrator are very specific, it'll be interesting to see what the club say about that. -
I did this a few years back, it was fantastic, I thoroughly recommend it to anyone no matter your age or ability.

It's an interesting dynamic at play here. Wallace is employed by the board and so the owners of the club. His job is to deliver their strategy, whatever that strategy might be. I don't think you need to be a business genius to guess the probable business strategy of a hedge fund. They're here to make money, one way or another their entire business is predicated on making money, usually quite quickly. There are a number of ways they can achieve that; they can asset strip, they can structure the business so it creates large profits usually in the short term or they can work to increase the share value and sell out. In between those scenarios are opportunities to make 'smaller' amounts like the loan agreement recently announced. So my point here is that Wallace, whatever some might think of his honesty, competency or ability, is taking 120 days to review how to achieve the aims of the business owners, not the support. At times 'their' aims and 'ours' might aline, but most of us have different aims for the club, simply not making a big loss is acceptable to the vast majority of the support if the football side of the club is performing. Wallace is an employee and his remit isn't to make a league winning side, that might be a welcome by-product of his remit, but it might not be. So King's intervention is fascinating. From everything I've read about King he seems to have been in the right place at the right time to make a significant amount of money. Capitalising in a spectacular way from the sell-off of the public sector in a country going through enormous change he's not the first person to have made money this way, Roman Abramovich springs to mind albeit on another scale altogether. Either way King has made his money and from his past actions and his present statements he doesn't seem to be looking at Rangers as a vehicle to extract profit from. Of course he might be disingenuous, perhaps he wants the club so he can claw back the £20 million he invested under SDM and go and live large in Sun City. The majority of supporters don't think that's the case though. What is interesting about King's statement for me is its contradictions. He seems certain the club needs more investment, this investment is required so we can compete with Celtic when that time arises. Yet clearly the club is unable to self-generate this investment, it needs rich benefactors to do that. Wasn't that the model we had before that ultimately was a flawed model? I agree with a lot of what King said, however my concern is that King wants to return to the previous model. Although he said this "but I do not believe that Rangers should be under the control of one owner/benefactor. We have already seen the damage that has been caused at Rangers (and many other clubs) when the club becomes a hostage to the fluctuating whims and wealth of a single owner. I see my role as being the lead investor of a like-minded consortium that will invest in the club, along with the supporters, without the "short-sightidness" of an immediate return on investment. An immediate return on investment will guarantee a non-immediate return of the team to the top flight." the return of the club to a point where we require to spend more than we make concerns me greatly. That's not sustainable, that will leave us open to "fluctuating whims" perhaps not of one person but certainly of a small number of people. King's own recent history shows the folly of this, his inability to access his considerable wealth due to issues with the South African government is part of the reason we are where we are. Let's not pretend that can't happen again. I've no faith in our current owners, I truly believe their aims are not in the best interest of the club or will achieve what I and all fans want. By comparison King is very attractive, but caution is required. King seems to be thinking with his heart, talk of stopping Celtic is emotive, but that can't come at any cost. King must be an intelligent man, he's clearly got a business brain, I'd like to hear that side of his personality a bit more and less of the 'fan' speaking. We need clear heads just now.

Allison Hunter died earlier this year, I'm not sure if someone else has been elected to her ward yet. The real question is why all of those politicians feel the need to put distance between them and us? Ian Davidson, Nicola Sturgeon and the late Allison Hunter don't come from an obviously anti-Rangers background. Politicians are nothing if not opportunists, so why did they choose to pass up that opportunity? After our ownership I think this is the biggest issue facing Rangers. I think we're miles away from solving it though.

Have to say I can't fault a word of it. If it was written by Tim it doesn't change my view, but it really didn't read like it was to me. Real question is what we do about it. We've started these discussions before and they usually end up in acrimony but our lack of broader appeal in Scotland is going to be a bigger and bigger problem in the future.

That's a poor post GS, football is about emotion and affection as much as economics. Albion Rovers are no more a drag on Scottish football than any other side.

There really is no excuse at all for that. A typo or the wrong date can sometimes be explained if there was a copy deadline looming and something was rushed through, but that's unforgivable.

Dr Waiton on Rangers, Free Speech and Sectarianism
amms replied to ThatsWhyWeirChamps's topic in Rangers Chat
I love that some people are under the misapprehension that Andy is some kind of West End lovey, cosseted away from life's harsh realities. Hah! Whilst not in favour of faith schools I don't think it is fair to lay the blame for sectarianism purely at their door. I've known many Roman Catholics who don't have a bigoted bone in their bodies, likewise I've known plenty bigots who were the product of a non-denominational education. 'Catholic' schools don't create bigots, they create catholics, the two aren't synonymous you know. I've issues with the funding of faith schools but I've no problem with them existing or with parents choosing to send their children there. I see racism, misogyny and homophobia fairly regularly in Glasgow and the surrounding area, seeing as there aren't separate schools for black or Asian kids, girls or gays what are we blaming for that then? As an aside I know for a fact that the prevalent view in the Church of Scotland is wariness of independence. They believe their status as the 'official' church will diminish if it comes to pass and that the current SNP 'government' is far too secular for their liking. At the same time I know individual ministers and members of the church who are strong Scottish nationalists. -
Lambert/Alan Hutton (nothing to do with current Rangers if you want to skip)
amms replied to SteveC's topic in Rangers Chat
It's not contradictory because Hutton not playing isn't anything to do with football ability. His salary and bonus structure are what is keeping him out of the squad and also what is stopping someone buying him. Lambert clearly rates him as a player but is under instruction not to play him as it will trigger further payments both to the player and to his previous club. Why he can't go out on loan again though is a crime, he's basically lost a season of his career. He's being badly advised I feel, he must have already made a serious amount of money from football, he should be able to agree to rip up his Villa contract and leave on a free, he's unlikely to secure another £40k a week gig but he'd still get a significant salary from someone and as a free a hefty signing on fee whilst Villa save his salary. I'm being naive regarding football player motivation I know. -
That's a fair criticism. I've done a handful of these now and each time I apologise to Zappa for the lack of match analysis. Truth is I've no great insight, I'm no more tactically aware than the next supporter and less so than some. This is fourth time we've played Stenhousemuir in 6 months, the accumulative score is 11-0, I struggle to bring any fresh perspective on that. I did try and add some information about the sides but it's fairly superficial I accept that.
