  2. James Stokes VC pwm437 Post by on Jun 3, 2007 at 11:11pm James Stokes was born in Crown Street, Gorbals on 6th February 1915, one of four children of George and Mary Stokes. Both parents died when James was still young, and he was sent to work on a relative's farm in Southern Ireland. James returned to Glasgow and married Janet Kennedy who bore him a family. In 1943 he enlisted with the Royal Artillery. Whilst home on leave, James got into a fight when someone made disparaging remarks about his wife, which resulted in the thug ending up in hospital and James in a military prison. He had the choice of spending eight years in a military prison or going to Normandy for the landings. He chose the latter. James was in the midst of the Arnhem operation at the Lower River Maas on 1st March 1945, acting as bodyguard to a Lieutenant Banks when thay came under fire from German machine guns, ahead of their own platoon. A bullet grazed Stokes' neck, spurring him on to grab his gun and charge a German position. He returned with twelve prisoners, but this would not end the German aggression. Stokes once again set off to take out another German machine gun post, and this time succeeded in capturing a further five Germans, but sustained a wound to the chest in the process. With one last German gun emplacement remaining, Stokes set out for a third time to do his duty, but alas his luck ran out and he was fatally wounded, with no less than eight shots in his body. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. The story of Jimmy Stokes appeared in an edition of the Victor boys comic on March 13th 1965, a Celtic Supporters Club bears his name, and his VC was sold at Sotheby's for £18,000. James Stokes VC is laid to rest in the Reichswald Forest Cemetery in Cleves, Germany...I have visited his grave several times and have placed a bouquet of poppies on his grave on behalf of the James Stokes VC Celtic Supporters Club. The people of the Gorbals recently unveiled a memorial to James Stokes in the burial gardens at Old Rutherglen Road. The deeds of James Stokes VC were recorded in the Victor... 4. Had another look at SG after match interview, he does mention booing. So you may well be correct.
  5. I thought it was directed at the referee, certainly by the fans around me in main stand.

Financial figures posted on Wednesday evening showed that RIFC plc made a loss of £14.3million to the year end June 30, 2018, more than double their deficit for the previous 12 months. King and his fellow investors backed former boss Pedro Caixinha in the transfer market last summer but Rangers crashed out of the Europa League and the first qualifying round, lost in the semi-finals of both cup competitions and could only finish third in the Premiership as Graeme Murty and then Jimmy Nicholl had to take the Ibrox reigns. And chairman King was disappointed the multi-million pound outlay didn’t have the desired impact on the field during a lamentable season. He said: “We believed that we had a management team and playing squad that could take us to the next level. “Sadly, that was not to be and after having given a reasonable period of support, the Board decided that further management changes were necessary. We are extremely grateful that Graeme Murty was again willing to assist by taking temporary charge of the team and we saw real improvement in the second half of the season that resulted in Rangers being top goal scorers in the league and narrowly beaten into third place. “The Board had to reflect that once again we had produced a footballing performance that was not commensurate with the resources that had been invested, or the demands of our supporters. Something was wrong. “Our newly appointed Director of Football, Mark Allen, was tasked with reviewing the manner in which we recruited our players and support staff to identify areas for improvement and to ensure that, going forward, we get a higher level of performance from our investment in football talent. “Mark conducted a comprehensive review that led to a complete overhaul of our various football departments during the last financial year. In addition (and very importantly) we have now incorporated key personal character traits that have to be present for anyone wishing to play for Rangers, or to be part of the management of this Club. “We have seen that technical excellence alone is insufficient to perform at a club like Rangers. The new structures had an immediate impact and this is reflected in the quality of players who are being produced at the Academy and the quality of the signings made during the last two transfer windows. “As with any business, the sound operational structure is only truly effective if the right management is overseeing it. We now have a superb group of management talent throughout the Club.” The abject failures of Caixinha and Murty led Rangers to make another managerial change in the summer as Steven Gerrard was appointed boss on a four-year deal. And the Liverpool legend has already given the balance sheet a much-needed boost by guiding his side into the group stages of the Europa League this term. King, writing in his chairman’s report in the RIFC plc accounts, said: “While the impact of the current manager appointment is post-year end I take this opportunity to welcome Steven Gerrard and his management team to the Club. “The appointment of Steven was driven by the Board’s decision to make a significant step change in funding for the coming year and to do so in an environment where we believe we can finally have the stability and continuity necessary to achieve a winning culture. “I am extremely grateful to Steven for taking on the challenge and for his ability to make such an immediate impact on the Club. Some of the benefits have already been realised and will be dealt with more fully when we report next year on the present financial year.”

  8. I’ve watched that 10 times and cannot see a coin at all, old age does not come alone.
  9. We seem to be incapable of breaking down a defensive setup. SG does not make substitutions when most of us can see plan A is not working, sometimes you just need to change personnel and see what happens. Also SG does not seem to make changes quick enough, as some said he is reactive not proactive. I still have faith in the manager, he will learn. We have made great strides, Rome was not built in a day.

  12. FROM BBC WEBSITE Graham Dorrans; Rangers midfielder suffers injury setback I Graham Dorrans has started just 21 games since joining Rangers in the summer of 2017 Graham Dorrans faces "a few months" out as the Rangers midfielder's injury frustration continues. The 31-year-old requires knee surgery, having missed five months of last season and managing just one start and two substitute appearances this term. The former West Bromwich Albion and Norwich player moved to Ibrox in the summer of 2017. Manager Steven Gerrard confirmed plans for the operation, saying: "He will be missing for definite for a few months."
  13. Been having a wee read of discussions on another site about Poppy wearing and the Rangers Poppy in particular. 1. Some are saying that the Rangers Badge Poppy devalues what the Poppy is all about. 2. Also that Poppies are worn far too early, namely by TV personalities. Tend to agree with No.2.

  20. POLL REMINDER: Board Member Affirmation A reminder to members that our current poll will close at midnight on Tuesday 23rd October. If you have not yet voted then please take the opportunity to do so prior to this time. The original poll email is copied below. The next stage in the election process is the affirmation of any existing Club 1872 board members who wish to seek member approval to continue for another term. The Club 1872 constitution allows for up to one half of the serving board to seek affirmation for another term. Under the changes just voted through by members, this means that up to two existing directors can seek affirmation. Following discussion amongst the existing Club 1872 board, it has been agreed that Joanne Percival and Euan Macfarlane will put themselves forward for affirmation by members. Any other existing board members who wish to seek another term can present themselves for election once applications open in the coming days. If affirmed, Joanne and Euan will serve a three year term on the Club 1872 board. Should they wish to continue beyond that time they would have to submit themselves for election in line with the Club 1872 constitution. Joanne and Euan have prepared the following statement to members in support of their affirmation. "With over 18 months’ experience of working together as part of a team of volunteers, and with the support of our fellow Club 1872 Directors we are delighted to take this opportunity to submit ourselves for affirmation. We have served together as Directors for the past year, overseeing a major campaign that led to the organisation investing £1m directly into Rangers through the purchase of shares. Club 1872 remains the second largest shareholder in the club, an achievement we’re both very proud of. In March we took on the responsibility of jointly managing the Projects Working Group, and have since delivered two projects - the purchase of an adapted road vehicle to assist supporters with mobility difficulties, and the funding of a Walking Football programme in partnership with the Rangers Charity Foundation. It has been a pleasure to work alongside the Club 1872 members who volunteer on that group, and we are currently in the process of assessing more projects to submit to the wider membership for approval. It is our hope that with members’ support we will be given the opportunity to continue building on the strong working relationships we’ve developed within the Rangers community, including the Rangers Charity Foundation and RYDC. This would allow us to continue progressing the work we’ve started on potential projects and community engagement; we are in the process of developing a formal intake model to allow supporters to communicate more effectively with the club through Club 1872. During the affirmation vote we will continue to carry out our duties as directors. Should we be affirmed, we will maintain our commitment through the election process which is due to take place in the coming weeks. We believe this would bring stability to the organisation during a process that requires a great deal of administrative and practical input. The affirmation process was included in our constitution to give members the opportunity to ensure the organisation doesn’t suffer the disruption caused by a whole new board coming in. We believe we have the knowledge, skills and commitment to provide stability and continuity over the coming weeks and years. We thank you for your support over the past year and your consideration at this time." We would ask you to vote by clicking the link below and logging in to your account - you will then be automatically redirected to the poll. The poll will close at midnight on Tuesday 23rd October: VOTE HERE Club 1872
  21. Durrant was a class footballer but not the brightest bulb in the house. That he thinks making that comment is smart shows his lack of intelligence, although we have some fans who would lap it up including a couple on here.
