25 mins ago Chris Jack: Rangers' final transfer deals will determine their title chances this term By Christopher Jack @Chris_Jack89Group Senior Sports Writer Steven Gerrard THE task of building a title winning team in one or two transfer windows is almost an impossible one. And so it proved for Steven Gerrard in his first campaign as Rangers manager last term. By the time you have a third period of wheeling and dealing behind you, you should start to see real progress, though. That is where Rangers are already this summer. Now, the last couple of deals that the Light Blues complete in the coming weeks will determine how serious a chance they have of winning the Premiership and stopping Celtic's attempts at clinching nine-in-a-row. When Gerrard arrived at Ibrox 12 months ago, the rebuilding job ahead of him was significant and 15 players had to be brought in as an ineffective squad that was not fit for purpose was quickly overhauled for relatively little outlay. Overall, that recruitment process can be considered a success but the mistakes - the likes of Eros Grezda and Kyle Lafferty - were costly. Neither will play any part this season and the handful of players that were left out of the trip to Portugal last week face fairly bleak futures at Ibrox as well. Gerrard admitted in the Algarve that the squad will have to be trimmed and that will quickly become a priority for Director of Football Mark Allen this summer. The main focus for now, though, is adding the finishing touches to a squad that has to challenge for the title and win silverware this term. The strike rate was decent enough last summer, while the deals done for Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe in January were headline grabbing ones that should pay off this term. Rangers have wasted little time in getting down to business ahead of Gerrard's second season and seven signatures, including that of Davis, have been secured already. All of those brought on board will have a part to play in the coming months but Rangers now need a couple that instantly improve the team rather than raising the standard of the squad. The likes of Jake Hastie and George Edmundson have been signed with one eye on the long-term, while some fans have still to be convinced of the merits of bringing in Jordan Jones and Greg Stewart. It is easier to see where Sheyi Ojo and Joe Aribo fit into the team and how they could become key players fairly quickly for Gerrard. And if Rangers can get another loan for Ryan Kent over the line, the Ibrox boss will certainly not be short of options in the final third. Those choices could be reduced if Alfreo Morelos moves on after two seasons in Light Blue and the deal to replace him could define Rangers' silverware ambitions. It would be wrong for the Gers to bring in a bigger name just for the sake of it and Gerrard isn't the type of manager to be swayed by reputation over ability. Proven, established strikers are, of course, hard to come by and are certainly not cheap but the acquisition of a forward with more of a track record than, with all respect, Jones, Hastie or Stewart, would be a real statement of intent. The same can be said at the other end of the field. Gerrard now has three centre-backs in the shape of Edmundson, Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic but a fourth is needed. Again, many fans would like to see a more experienced stopper brought in, someone who can inspire and lead by example, and also bring on Edmundson and Katic for the future at Ibrox. The quality of the squad has been raised once again, but a couple of key additions could make all the difference now. The improvement in Rangers over the last year is clear and that progress seems set to continue in Gerrard's second campaign. The next few weeks will give an insight into just how far the 39-year-old can take Rangers this term. AND ANOTHER THING AS transfer deals go, the one which finally brought Joe Aribo to Rangers from Charlton Athletic last week wasn't quite a saga. It did seem to drag on at times, but the wait was finally worth it for boss Steven Gerrard as he landed one of his main targets. Rangers had to be patient throughout the process as Aribo considered the options in front of him after a campaign in League One that really saw him establish himself. In the end, the lure of working with Gerrard looks to have been the clincher for the midfielder. If Aribo can produce the kind of form Rangers believe he is capable of and continue to improve and impress, he could have a major part to play in the Premiership title race in the coming months. Helping Gerrard's side to the top flight silverware would be a contribution that would forever be remembered by supporters. But he could have a lasting impact off the park as well and clubs will be keeping a close eye on how he does with a view to making another move for him in the future. Deals for up-and-coming players from England can pay off significantly for Scottish clubs and the Aribo move is exactly the kind of one Rangers should be making right now. They have a fine player on the park, and an asset on the balance sheet. If Aribo does well, then everyone will win out of this one and a compensation package of around £300,000 will be a bargain. No wonder Charlton boss Lee Bowyer chucked his toys out of the pram.

RANGERS rounded off their Portuguese training camp with a 2-0 victory over Mansfield on Saturday night. Steven Gerrard handed debuts to all seven of his summer signings as goals from Sheyi Ojo and Greg Docherty won it for the Light Blues.Gerrard has spent this week putting his players through their paces in the Algarve and Rangers got their first match minutes of the new campaign against League Two opposition. Ojo opened the scoring in the first third of the match as he converted from close range after good work from Jon Flanagan and Jamie Murphy down the left. And Docherty marked his return to the Gers fold with a well-taken finish from the edge of the area in the closing stages of a relatively one-sided contest. Liverpool winger Ojo, George Edmundson and Steven Davis all started for Gerrard’s side, while Greg Stewart, Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie featured in the second third as Joe Aribo also made his debut just days after signing from Charlton. Stewart should have opened his Light Blues account after creating a good chance for himself down the left but he couldn’t get his shot away quickly enough. Youngsters Lewis Mayo, Stephen Kelly, Jamie Barjonas, Josh McPake and Dapo Mebude all featured as every member of the travelling party was given a run-out. McPake in particular caught the eye and he came close with an effort just minutes after entering the action, while Alfredo Morelos also looked dangerous and hit the woodwork with a low shot across goal. Rangers fly back to Glasgow on Sunday and will face Oxford United in friendly action next weekend before returning to Europa League duty with a clash against Prishtina or St Joseph’s on Thursday, July 11.

Steven Gerrard celebrated in the stands at the Wanda Metropolitano as Liverpool lifted their sixth Champions League title in Madrid. Amidst the jubilation, he took a moment to watch the thousands of Reds fans behind the goal go crazy as Jordan Henderson lifted the European Cup aloft. Then he saw Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp in tears, as he embraced every one of his players and staff on the pitch after the 2-0 victory over Spurs. And suddenly, the Liverpool legend’s mind was back at Ibrox. Gerrard was used to that winning feeling as a player. Apart from the Premier League, he lifted every club trophy available to him. And despite savouring it again as a supporter last month in Spain, he wants to feel it for real as a manager. Seeing the Liverpool fans in a state of ecstasy made him even more determined to give Rangers supporters those same emotions. He knows how important winning silverware is to the Light Blues, who have now gone eight years without a major trophy. Liverpool’s big night in Madrid was the highlight of Gerrard’s summer. But now he’s back at it with Gers, trying to produce a squad capable of ensuring there are similar celebrations in Govan next May. As he reflected on Liverpool’s Champions League victory, he said: “I loved the night in Madrid for the final. “It was the first time I’ve had the opportunity to do it as a fan. I got the invite from Liverpool and it was brilliant. “It was deserved after the season that Liverpool had and going so close in the Premier League. It was fantastic for everyone and I’ve still got mates in that team. “I have built a bit of a relationship with Jurgen as well and after going so close to the sixth the time before, I was delighted for him. It was a great experience. “Being there and seeing it, I looked at the Liverpool fans. “Emotionally it brought back a lot of memories of my own from being a Liverpool player. “I was thinking ‘OK, I would love that to be us at Rangers’. “I would love to be watching my players celebrate. I was looking at Jurgen, looking at his players celebrate and I would love nothing better than to do that in 12 months time. “Or sooner if we get the opportunity in a few months time with the League Cup.” Gerrard was the last Liverpool skipper to lift the Champions League back in 2005 after the remarkable comeback in Istanbul against AC Milan. He played alongside the England midfielder Henderson before hanging up his boots at Anfield and helped him settle on Merseyside after his move from Sunderland. Gerrard was as emotional as anyone seeing Henderson and his dad Brian – who fought cancer – cry in each other’s arms at the final whistle. And for Klopp, the Rangers boss was delighted because since he has become gaffer at Ibrox, the German has been a regular source of help and knowledge. Gerrard said: “How could I possibly be jealous of Jordan lifting the trophy? He’s my mate. “I am tight with Jordan and we played together for many years with Liverpool and England. I was delighted for him and it was so deserved, there is no better professional than Jordan. “You get out of this game what you put in, so if you go on that trade of thought then he certainly deserves it. “I know his dad Brian quite well, along with his mum. “They asked me to keep an eye on him when he first rolled up and came into Anfield from Sunderland as a young boy. “He has got great parents that support him and I know they have had family issues over the last year or so. “So it was fantastic for their family, I was absolutely delighted for them. “As for Jurgen, as a young manager you try and be a sponge from all the top bosses when you watch them on the sidelines, watch them do interviews or you actually meet them. “It’s no different with Jurgen for me. “You try to take in all of the good things from them. He has been very helpful to me since I started out in coaching and moved to Rangers. “A lot of the stuff I will keep private, but any questions I have or bits of advice I need, he always helps me out.” Gerrard’s main focus now, of course, is winning trophies at Ibrox. And he knows he won’t be able to do it without the backing of the Rangers support, who are every bit as passionate about their team as Liverpool fans are with theirs. Last week, it was announced the club have sold a record number of 46,000 season tickets for the coming season – and that’s despite failing to win anything major for the best part of a decade. Gerrard isn’t surprised by the level of dedication – and says it’s why he now adores the club he works for. He said: “It’s no surprise that we’ve sold a record number of season tickets. “I’ve been amongst the fans before I took the job – so I knew the passion and desire. “That’s a massive part of why I love Rangers now. To be breaking records like that is a real compliment to me, the players and the staff. “The supporters clearly see what we’re trying to do, see the progress we’re making and they enjoy the way we’re playing. Aribo, 22, made 97 appearances and scored 16 goals for Charlton and helped them win promotion to the Championship last term through the play-offs. He has reportedly cost £300,000 because of cross-border transfer rules. "There were clubs in for Joe around Europe, in the Premier League and the Championship," manager Gerrard said. Jones out to 'prove a point' at Rangers "He's mobile, dynamic, can burst past a player and create and score goals. There is room for him to develop but he'll give us something we've not got in the midfield department. "We're confident we can turn Joe into an even better player. He's young and we firmly believe there is a lot to come from him, but we need to be patient in order to allow him to continue his development." The Ibrox side have signed Sheyi Ojo, Steven Davis, Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Greg Stewart already this summer. Last year’s figure of 45,419 was itself a record but, as of today, 45,757 have been sold and we have a waiting list of close to 14,000. These numbers not only reflect the undying loyalty Rangers supporters have for their club but also demonstrate the strength of belief they have in the present management team. No one is more conscious of that than Rangers chairman Dave King, who said: “Once again Rangers supporters have stepped forward and reminded us that we, the directors of this special club, are in a fortunate and privileged position to be able to work for them and with them. “Rangers has always been a leader on and off the pitch and with the support that our fans continue to demonstrate we will maintain that tradition. “I have said before, but it is worth repeating, that Rangers is special and, having won more trophies than any other club in the world, we have a genuinely unique place in football history. We must keep it that way while welcoming everyone who wants to be part of this wonderful institution. “This is an inclusive and diverse club and we are close to announcing initiatives which will make Rangers even more special to so many more people. “I said recently that it would be remarkable if we could get to last season’s figure for season ticket sales but you have done more than that. The club’s managing director Stewart Robertson echoed those sentiments and said: “We all know how big a club this is but these ticket numbers just reinforce the depth of feeling so many people have for Rangers. “Apart form making sure our facilities, Ibrox and the Hummell, – a great deal of work, which costs lot of money, has been going on at both centres to maintain the standards our fans demand and deserve – remain the best, our job is to help the management team secure the players they want. “The fans deserve success and we must try to give them what they want. But I must express my thanks to them for the belief they continue to show in their club.’ Manager Steven Gerrard added: ‘We need to thank the supporters. But we also need to take is as a complement as they are obviously enjoying what they are seeing on the pitch. “It is brilliant news and I think they deserve to be rewarded – the players need to realise that. The fans were one of the highlights for me last season. I really loved being in front of them and coaching and managing in front of them. I am really looking forward to being in front of them again. “They are top-drawer. West Bromwich Albion have angrily let fly at Celtic boss Neil Lennon over his treatment of Oliver Burke during his loan spell at Parkhead. The £15million winger has been linked with a return to Glasgow, but the Baggies insist he won’t be going anywhere near the Scottish champions again. Burke, 22, joined Celtic in January during Brendan Rodgers tenure. Rodgers departed to join Leicester City at the end of February and former Hibs boss Lennon returned for a second stint as Bhoys boss. Burke would score four goals in 14 games for the treble winners, but West Brom technical director Luke Dowling has blasted Lennon’s treatment of Burke, and vowed that there will be no return. “He won’t be going anywhere near Celtic with the current manager,” said Dowling, on the day West Brom formally unveiled new boss Slaven Bilic. “We sent Oli to Celtic in good faith with Brendan Rodgers and Lee Congleton some really good people up there that wanted to take Olly and wanted to play him. They wanted to make him a better player than he currently is. “Once Brendan left to go to Leicester the treatment he got from the manager that’s in place now is something we don’t expect for one of our players. “He won’t be going anywhere near Celtic FC. "He’s had mixed messages and that’s why we thought going up to work with Brendan would be a good period for him to come back a better player and to improve on his game. The Gers midfielder - along with Kyle Lafferty, Eros Grezda, Graham Dorrans and Jason Holt - has been left at home and told to find a new club while the rest of the squad get to work in Portugal. Rossiter was tipped for big things at Liverpool before Gers move Rossiter, 22, has barely featured for the Light Blues because of injuries since joining from Liverpool three years ago. The former England U-19s captain was outstanding during a loan spell at Bury last season. But Steven Gerrard already has plenty of midfield options and is on the verge of adding out-of-contract Charlton star Joe Aribo. The Ibrox boss admits it was difficult telling the quintet their services were no longer required, although he accepts there can be no room for sentiment. He enjoyed a successful loan at Bury last season. He added: “The squad is big. We have 28 players with us right now. “The board haven’t said and they haven’t put me under any pressure, but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out the squad is too big. “I have to be honest and tell people they won’t get the game time that will satisfy them. “It’s not as brutal as saying get out as quick as you can, we don’t respect you and don’t love you anymore. “But as a manager you have to make tough decisions and you have to go with what you think is the best prepared squad to challenge next season. “Yes, I have had to have difficult conversations with certain players, but I hope they understand I’m trying to be as respectful as I can to give them as much time to find a different route. “My job is to manage the team, manage game time, make team selections and pick squads best capable of being successful. “In terms of contracts and what is out there for them, that is where their agents will come into it more than myself. “It’s very easy for a manager to be selfish and keep them in the door for as long as you want and tell them later on in the window. I don’t think that is fair. “I want to give people I respect the best chance to get the best solution for them. “That is why I have told certain people as early as I can.”
