He was a quiet and reserved man who had been a Rangers player under legendary manager Bill Struth. “By the time he was chosen to succeed the great man in 1954, Symon had proved himself not only a very good player but also a manager with the right pedigree for the job.’ Symon, it adds, was the first man to play both football and cricket for Scotland and would have had more soccer caps but for the fact of the Second World War. He was also to be the last of the old-school bosses; “after him came a new breed who would don tracksuits to join the players on the training pitch.” Under Symon, Rangers reached two European Cup Winners’ Cup finals, in 1961, when they lost to Fiorentina, and in 1967, when they were defeated by Bayern Munich. Domestically, he steered them to their second treble of League, Cup and League Cup Treble, in 1963-64, as well as the League and Cup doubles the previous season. In all, Symon saw his players win six league titles, five Scottish Cups and four League Cups. He is pictured here (right, bottom) in November 1957 with two other Rangers greats - Bob McPhail, who scored 230 league goals for the club, and Alan Morton. Symon was controversially dismissed, however, in 1967; in the words of the club website, it came after he rejected a move to make him general manager and let a younger man run team affairs. The younger man was his assistant, David White who suddenly found himself in charge after just five months at the club. Symon went on to serve as a director at Dumbarton before taking over as manager at Patrick Thistle. The picture (right, tóp) shows him in the dugout in his first game in charge, against Hibs, in September 1968 -Thistle won 2-1. Simon died in April 1985, aged 74. The Herald’s Ian Paul wrote that Symon had “tasted the glories of football as well as its depressions.” His death had occurred just a few months after he had become reconciled with Rangers: “Not surprisingly, his sacking caused great controversy, and it was only when Rangers played Moscow Dynamo this year that the rift was healed and Symon accepted an invitation to return to Ibrox.”

The UB statement is exactly what I expected from them. No remorse far less an apology from a group who think their the most important thing on match days. One other point if it s correct, the club have never spoken to them about the song sheet. That’s a dereliction of duty by our board.

Steven Gerrard admits he fears losing one of Rangers’ top stars in the last week of the transfer window - and not being allowed to replace them. The Ibrox boss claims he’s satisfied with the squad he has to take him through until January and will only add to it if there’s a late chance of heart from Liverpool on a Ryan Kent loan. But he’s aware of interest in the likes of Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier and believes a decent bid for any of his main men might end up leaving him short. Gerrard said: “We’ll find out in the coming days. I predict that a bid will land for one of my players. "I think you'll see some movement out. There's some offers swirling about for certain individuals, so there will be news broke over the seven or so days that are left. “But I can't see there being any change the other way unless something comes out of the blue and takes away one of our players we might have to replace. “That could happen. There's nothing really solid yet that we have to make a decision on, but it's getting warmer as they days go by, so I predict there could be some outgoings. "I'm comfortable in certain situations with certain personnel going out and playing football, players who are maybe not in my plans. “What I'm not comfortable with is if a bid comes out of the blue for a player that is in my plans, that's when I would have a decision to make.” With eight days to go until deadline day, Gerrard is hoping any bid which will be to the detriment of his squad will be knocked back but he confessed: “I think it would depend on what comes from above, what their opinion is on it. “At the end of the day it’s their money, the players are owned by the board. The answer is very very simple. The board must take action including bans for offending groups and individuals. At the moment 99% of fans will back any action the board decide on, the balls at their feet will they kick it hard enough?

I think we’re at a watershed point in our history now. The Club have a simple choice, take strong action to rid us of the morons or go on with the wee cosy chats and appeals that the morons will just ignore. If this behaviour continues we could be out of European football, does anyone think that Steven Gerrard would stay if that happened? He’d be off not wanting his name attached to a club that’s been proven racist/sectarian, the directors have a big decision to make here. Are they up to it?
