Match Thread [FT] Rangers 2 (Cerny 34', 58') - 0 St Johnstone
Sutton_blows_goats replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
Solid 3 points after a tough week, but a few big red flags. Some of our players just can’t handle two games a week – they don’t have the stamina. Guys like Diomande and Dessers are really struggling to keep up. Diomande, in particular, is a serious concern. We’ve spent a lot of money on him, but he’s only had one good game all season (Malmo). In most other matches, he’s been subbed either for poor performance or lack of fitness. Playing two games a week is the standard here. No point moaning about it. We want to challenge for a domestic treble and do well in Europe, right? Well, that means getting used to playing a lot of football and making sure the squad can handle it. We’ve got about 2.5 months of football left before the January transfer window opens. If we’re serious about competing this season, we should already be thinking about getting new signings in and deals done now. If we don’t get reinforcements in, I worry we’re not taking this season seriously at all. I’d even consider moving on high-value players like Dessers and Butland if the right opportunity comes up in the window. We need to trust our recruitment policy and believe we can replace them. -

That ref is particularly bad for it, but only when its a team playing us. He doesn't afford us the same rules. -

That was absolutely torture. The cia are going to use it to torture Russian spies. But 3 points and a +2 in the goal difference. -

Every time a St Johnstone player goes to ground they get a free kick, no matter how soft. -

Great goal from Cerny again. Great ball from hagi into feet and he attacks his man. Needs to do more of that. -

Sterling has done well as a utility player in short term impact scenarios but I’m yet to be convinced he is a long term answer for a fixed position, either at fullback or in midfield. And that’s not even mentioning his inability to last 90 mins regularly. -

I’m all for phasing Tav out the team but I’m not sure a home game v a terrible side who will probably park the bus is the correct time to do it. The tougher away games, home euro games and games v them, that’s fine. -

Was that a 5-5 aggregate? Derek Clarke on the Rangers review posted on twitter he picked up a programme from this game at a sports memorabilia game in Northampton the other day. Edit - actually it was red star Belgrade, but also at Highbury, 4th November 1964. -

I'm hoping the manager picks the strongest available team for our biggest game of the week on Sunday. 3 points is vital. I'm assuming Lawrence isn't fit or I'd have him in the team, has been good in front of goal recently. We got beat by Lyon at home under Gerrard too, my argument is fine, I don't think you understand it. We can still make it to the business end of the EL this season. If we beat FCSB, USG and take something from Nice and Olympiacos we will get through. In fact the year we made the final, before we reached the EL we were beaten twice by a Malmo side who I'm not sure are much better than this seasons after making a tough job of some eastern European postmen in Alashkert shirts. When we started the Europa under Gerrard we suffered consecutive defeats by Lyon and Sparta Prague. But took 4 points from Brondby before Gio took over and we beat Prague and drew with Lyon in essentially a dead rubber. Dortmund was an outlier, if we had played them 10 times we would probably have lost 5 times, drawn a couple and won a couple. Leipzig too, I think they were spooked by the occasion that night at Ibrox while our team rose to it, it was a perfect storm. Red Star Belgrade and Braga no. Even Frankfurt were not a big spender in comparison to many German teams at the time. But like I say that team we had that made it to the Europa league was paid more, had been bought for more and had gelled more than what we have now. I think there is some revisionism for many supporters around Gerrard and our run to Seville. The getting a hiding from a very expensively assembled Lyon at Ibrox is just how it is. And everyone needs to pull up the big boy trousers and look forward to Sunday and 3 points, and longer term reinforcements in January's transfer window. -
Bajrami looks very good for the money.

Yes, I think one problem we have in general is that our squad is very small and slight. And its my main gripe with our recruitment at the moment. If you look across the city at the 2 biggest signings, both are big lads. -

Like the Dortmund the same season we got beat 3-1 by a weaker Lyon side than this at Ibrox? Then yeah. Outliers can happen. There is a massive difference between that Rangers side and this one. That one had been together for a number of years, had won 55 and was at the peak of its powers. This squad is still very much in a rebuild and will have its best days ahead of it when reinforcements come in. What did Butland say about the manager? -

Sorry, but I cant understand that logic. Their league form is nothing to do with our ability to beat them considering they will play better teams than us most weeks. I think so many Rangers fans are stuck in some parallel universe to me where we should be beating sides like Lyon for fun. You will enjoy the games v Man U and Spurs. Clubs who trade players for more than our entire club is worth. -

If we would have sold him in the summer for the money reported to the team in the MLS it wouldn’t have been difficult to find an upgrade.
