  1. It could be that Adam is better suited to playing attacking football in a 4-4-2 and his form started to dip when he was pushed out wide in a defensive 4-5-1. Then again it could also be that he became the designated whipping boy of the support, seeing as Hutton finally came onto a good game and others like Svensson & Sionko were ditched when WS took over. Walter was saying recently something along the lines that Whittaker had taken a while to settle as he struggled to deal with the demands & criticism of the fans. It's probably bad enough when the team is collectively booed never mind when your singled out as an individual. Of course this is something you NEED to get used to when playing for Rangers - Just ask Hutton - but it can't be easy to concentrate when you've got 1000's calling you a fat lazy bas***d.
  2. The whole boozegate affair was blown out of all proportion and Rangers joined the mob in over-reacting. With the club's finances as they are it was more than convenient for them to bring in some cash and ease the wage bill whilst using that incident as an excuse. Like most fans I'm not angered by the sale of Ferguson. I think it's good that he's getting another chance in the EPL and with our midfield as strong as it currently is, I don't think he'll be badly missed. At the same time though, I wouldn't be so quick to entirely rule out the possibility of him ever playing for Rangers again. Now probably isn't the time for such discussion, but IMO if he does well in his time down south and all other factors (clubs finances, need for experience in side etc.) fit into place, then it wouldn't be the first time we've signed a 34 year old. As a club legend, it would only be fair for him to at the very least have a proper send off at some point in the future in the form of a testimonial. Either way I don't think we've seen the last of Ferguson in a Rangers jersey.
  3. Jenas & Hutton for £10m??
  4. It's a tough call. Last season we brought in players like Edu, Fleck, Smith, Vellicka, McCulloch & Dailly when needed and if it hadn't been for reserve games, most of them would have been nowhere near match fit. That said, even with a large squad there were times when we struggled to field a reserve team. With our squad being trimmed and having European fixtures added to the calendar this season, this problem is only going to increase. If we can successfully fit the right number of reserve games around our schedule, then maybe dropping out of the reserve league is the best option. At the same time we'll hopefully be able to hand pick a higher level of opposition. After all, playing against much of the SPL opposition is mundane enough never mind at reserve level. I do share SA's concerns about the increased number of players put out on loan though.
  5. Have to agree with Egil Ã?Ë?stenstad. How that guy managed to make a career as a footballer for himself ,nevermind playing in the EPL and at international level, is beyond me
  6. Because a few interested championship clubs (including Blackpool) tested the water with low bids and Bain basically told Blackpool the absolute minimum we'd be willing to sell him for, since he's such a decent and honest sort. ...Plus it's £500,000 more than we got for Burke.
  7. So he was 'plagued' by this same injury for the 6 months leading up to his £2m move to Rangers? Looks like our medical staff are still doing a fine job It doesn't come across as arrogant to me that he's saying he hopes he's managed to win over the support.
  8. Have to say that on this occasion I agree with Bain. The club have been dragged down once again by the small minded majority of the SPL. It's becoming increasingly difficult for the OF to compete with the rest of Europe due to the penny pinching, short-termist attitude of these muppets. The sooner we get shot of the lot of them (hopefully through the formation of a European / North Atlantic league) the better.
  9. I think we're definitely capable of getting to the last 16, but we'll need to get the tactics spot on and have an element of luck. Seeing as our expectations aren't very high, I wouldn't mind having a go with a 4-4-2 in some of the games as I'd like to see Boyd given a chance to prove himself at that level.
  10. I think there were games last season where we could have used Adam - The cup final immediately springs to mind. I agree that there are other midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order, but I think Adam still has a chance of making the grade at Rangers. If Ferguson goes and we pick up one or two injuries in midfield, Adam could get a run in the side and tbh that wouldn't bother me in the slightest as I think he's more than capable. Like I said in another thread, he needs to be getting games at this stage of his career or his development will suffer. We wouldn't have a problem finding him another loan deal if it came to that and no doubt it would be to a club as good if not better than Blackpool. Personally, I think with 3 years left on his contract and with as many clubs showing an interest £500k is an absolute joke. We should hold on to him for at least another year as that figure can only improve imo.
  11. I think the internet is definitely the way to go in terms of the foreign market, but the club is probably too short-sighted to see the potential. Even if they did go down that route it would probably be palmed off to a 3rd party, despite the fact that genuine Rangers fans have shown the drive, enthusiasm and know-how to practically do it themselves.
  12. All three should be offered contract extensions, albeit in Ferguson's case with a hefty pay-cut. It should be players like McCulloch, Beasley and Vellicka who are shown the door. Of course they were all WS signings so...
  13. Says it all really
  14. Very disappointed with this news. Another one of our most promising youngsters slips through our fingers. With Burke I could understand it as giving him a contract extension with his injury record was always going to be a gamble. In Adam's case it's more of a gamble to let him go. Rangers could be made to look very foolish on this one. Apart from anything else it just doesn't make sense to move him on for so little as ANY other club in the SPL would have been demanding AT LEAST double that. He had his off days, but even the club website says how effective he was the rest of the time. Our youth system doesn't stand a chance if the club AND support maintain their current attitude.
  15. As for what's best for Adam himself, I think at this stage of his career he needs to be playing regularly to have a chance of reaching his full potential. However I don't think we'd have a problem finding him another loan deal in January, if he's not getting enough games.
  16. I think Adam's one of our most under-rated players. It says a lot when you loan a player out for 6 months and he generates so much interest. As for him not being a winger, he may well be better suited to playing CM, but I think there are plenty of games in the course of the season (ie. dominating midfield in a 4-4-2 where we would otherwise be playing 4-5-1) that Adam is one of the better options we've got on the left. He's not too bad on the right either. Personally I hope we keep him as I believe he's one of the best players our youth system has produced in recent years.
  17. ...and didn't want to come back. I'd say Adam is a better example. Spent half a season on loan, got plenty first team action, attracted bids from several clubs, but wants to stay at Rangers. You can't really do better than that.
  18. Even if they make it to the final he'd only be playing 1 game more than he would have done otherwise. It's not good to be losing key players at any point of the season, but looking on the bright side, I'll be happy enough if it's Rangers that are missing him for 5 games.
  19. As for Furman, if there is a chance of our youngsters getting a game, then he seems like a decent option. Was one of our better players at U-19 level. Then again the under-21's rule could play it's part in him being moved on. I read somewhere that compensation has been agreed with Oldham, so I guess we'll never know.
  20. Why does he ever play McCulloch? Possibly just to try and justify the £millions we've invested in him. If any youngster was as consistently poor as big Lee they'd be out on their ear quicker than you can say Aaron. True, but it's a BIG step up from Hibs to Rangers as I'm sure Thomson an his buddy Whittaker would testify. Other clubs the size of ours find it easier to bring through youngsters because they can afford the best youth talent on the planet, while we can't. They also generally have a better standard of player supporting the youngsters. The level of expectation is the main obstacle to our youth development. having less room for giving youth a chance is the price we pay for winning at all costs. That may well be about to change to some extent with the downsizing of the squad though.
  21. ...Only to be picked up 5 mins later by clubs who could easily have afforded them
  22. Where does it say he was playing LB?. The match page from the link, says he was playing in midfield. Only other mention of him is that he was one of the players beaten for the first goal.
  23. I totally agree. It's the best option for everyone involved and the fans would probably even end up with better coverage than is currently offered. With finances in general being as they are at the moment, nevermind in Scottish football, it's not something the clubs could afford by themselves. Although I would think that a fair amount of sponsorship and advertisement money could be attracted to such a venture. One option which could help to ease initial setup costs would be to partner up with one of the existing terrestrial channels (BBC Scotland / STV) whereby in return for use of the filming equipment and staff (who in the case of the Beeb are already covering the games for radio anyway) they get a share of the profits and don't have to pay for Highlights rights.
  24. I think the main problem with the financial situation is that although we're guaranteed the CL money, we won't see any of it till next year. In other words the money problems we had in January haven't really gone away. We still need to sell off some assets and lower the wage bill in order to balance the books. In January, it was £3-4m we needed to bring in. Having failed to do that, the figure could have escalated by now. The other issue is that selling a player for £3-4m won't solve the problem either unless the buyer pays in full up front...which is rare in football these days. I guess we'll have to just wait and see, but I'd certainly be surprised if we have much (if any) money to spend this summer.

I think we need to cut Mendes some slack. A Premiership player on the fringes of the Portuguese National squad, signed for £3.5m (I thought it was 3??) played 40+ games in a season where we won the double, won 7 MOTM awards and scored a couple of important goals in the process, not to mention a reasonable number of assists. That's not TOO bad really is it? I think we should reserve judgement till this time next year. See how he does in the CL and whether his overall contribution is worthy of what will no doubt be a hefty wage.
