  1. The only NI one I would take at the moment is Healy. Shiells is no better than what we have and not as good as Naismith for instance. He is only fit to be a back-up/squad player and that's not what's needed right now.
  2. I couldn't have put it so nicely - especially after his 'performance' yesterday.
  3. Steady on with Boyd mate - ALL of us would have picked him before today. Do his quality goals count for nothing this season?Meant to say in my other post that Fergie - apart from the pass for Boyd's miss - was awful today and I can now say that I have NEVER seen him have a good OF game. Once Thomson is fit he and Mendes should be our first choice partnership and Fergie is no longer an automatic choice.
  4. It's difficult in the aftermath of such a setback to be objective, but I did say before the game that the selection of Adam worried me and sure enough, he ran about, charged into people and gave the ball away - typical Adam. Lafferty and Novo when they came on brought the ball on to their right foot and hit diagonal balls which were gobbled up by McAnus and Caldwell; not once did we get behind them and swing in dangerous crosses from the bye-line. Sadly we don't have genuine wide options unlike THEM and that is our Achilles heel. Rarely have I been so gutted after an OF game - the league IS lost today.
  5. Yeh, strange that...I've always been a BF fan, but can't really remember him having an outstanding OF game. Hope it's not come too soon for him fitness-wise.
  6. Is that the equivalent though? I thought it was the 'f' word..
  7. Problem is if we want him to be a regular starter - in what position and at whose expense? Certainly not Miller's, and I wouldn't start him on the right in place of Davis. Where we would miss him is as a sub - and that's probably what Hull are thinking too.
  8. And another thing; Walter has recently been criticising the decision that you must have 2 U21's on the bench - so that means the likes of Fleck would get even less of a look in. That aside, you have to wonder exactly how it would be decided who was a reserve and who was a squad player. For example, how do we classify those out on loan but playing in other clubs' first teams e.g. Gow, Lennon, Furman? Would those players have to be branded 'SPL only' and actually barred from the Atlantic League? I want to see this debate continuing because we have to come up with some solution - the status quo just is not acceptable.
  9. Can't see why you make an excellent argument then demolish it yourself. Why would it never happen? Ajax, Feyenoord, Porto and Benfica to name but a few, are HUGE clubs that will not put up for ever with the domination of the big four leagues (and don't forget the French league is now being left behind too ). Yes, crowds would initially drop in the SPL but it could be counter-balanced by a more competitive league. If, say, Hearts were challenging strongly, then Gers could put out a strong team in crunch games which would increase attendances. As to who would go into the CL - simple; the SPL winners would enter a qualifying phase. If we won both, runners-up would take our place. If we won the 'Atlantic League' then we would probably get guaranteed entry to the CL group stages. Only downside I see is that we would need a huge squad - we would need at least 24 players of CL standard. I can see no other alternative because the English Premiership is a non-starter now. Either the Atlantic league - or enter the Unibond League and try to do a Gretna:D
  10. Anyone see Rab C. Nesbitt last night? (which was hilarious by the way) - there was a comment about Gordon Ramsay being a 'Hun'. Should we be offended by the term? Or should we not lower ourselves to their level and just demonstrate our ability to laugh along with others? Just think it's interesting to say the least that if a gers-supporting character on a comedy show were to use the term '******' we'd be hauled over the P.C. coals so to speak.
  11. I'm probably on the wrong thread, but may I be among the first to wish my fellow Gersnet administrators and contributors a Merry Christmas and hopefully 3 points from Santa on Saturday!
  12. I'm dreaming of a very dubious last-minute refereeing decision in our favour. And Broadfoot scoring past Boruc with a 45 degree deflected free kick.
  13. As Cammy said, he did have a season where he contributed 14 goals, but if i remember correctly, he was played in more central midfield (he doesn't have the pace for out wide). But his free-kick skills seemed to have deserted him - and that at least is mystifying.
  14. Spot on. If Burley won't crawl to Kris, then we should all campaign to get rid of GB. His goal yesterday reminded me of one by Henrik Larsson against us, left foot, similar position, similar distance. And it's not a fluke - Boyd scored a cracker v Thistle and - in case anyone forgets - against C****c with his LEFT foot.
  15. If Coisty could go there and learn his trade, and be a success, then it would be the perfect preparation for us - but I just can't see it happening. Instead, he'll be allowed to make his mistakes with us.
  16. Agreed. Though we need a Weir successor, there are other priorities IMO.
  17. Yeh, I take your point! How to gamble, drink and womanise to a higher standard!
  18. Only thing I will disagree with in John Barr's otherwise interesting post is that we have a good alternative in Alexander. Although goalies reach their peak much later, Neil's well into his thirties and has had a, shall we say, chequered career. If we let Mac go, we'd be looking for a replacement and we've enough other priorities (left side for instance) without that. Best thing, as Gribz says, is to get a good goalkeeping coach like Goram. Who's our coach at the moment? Is it Jim Stewart? Whoever it is has to start earning his corn. Anyway, with his off-field image, who is going to pay big money? We'd be lucky to get a couple of millions, and that's not enough in my book to jettison a keeper whose best years are still ahead of him.
  19. Talking of muppets, wait till you see Ally as manager! The point I am really trying to make is who is there who (a) would take the job; (b)is available; and © good enough for us? Was just flying a kite to see if you guys can come up with some NAMES.
  20. Agree Jol is a decent manager but he would fail at Rangers if he wasn't given proper funding - just like Levein did at Leicester. Just look at the transformation in Dundee U since he went there - he's passionate, good man manager, out-thought Walter in big occasions when they have played us..
  21. 'Ripening nicely' for what though? The end of Walter? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished, but who is there to replace him? (Don't say cynically, 'anyone') I'd quite fancy Craig Levein, but he's just opted for 3 years at Dundee U.
  22. Don't doubt he could play for another 6 seasons, but it's another nail in the coffin for our 'youth' policy. More likely it'll be a transaction where we'll look to offload him at the first decent offer, rather than actually trying to build a team/squad that could 'grow' together.
  23. Think you're spot on there Craig. Broadfoot, despite his detractors who should know better, would probably benefit from being played in his true position. If Steve Smith is really never to recover, then I would look at Easton from Hamilton, or maybe Lee Wallace. The guy Tonel may be decent but at 28 is hardly one for the future (or is WS hoping we can do another Carlos here?). Actually, after last Saturday I was thinking who we would consider automatic choices for the first team as the squad stands at present. I came up with: McGregor, Bougherra, Mendes, Davis, Thomson, Boyd and Miller. That leaves 2 full backs, a centre back and a left midfielder. Everyone else should be available at the right price. I'm a Fergie fan but don't think he can play with Mendes, yet remember how we were all salivating to see how they would team up? I am trying to stay positive but sad to say i think we are now seeing a reprise of Walter's time at Everton, not his glory years of 9IAR.
  24. I loathe the lightness - in colour - of some of our modern strips, and I believe that originally Light Blue was the colour, only becoming closer to Royal Blue in the thirties, I think. I wish we could get back to that Royal Blue - my scarf, and those of most supporters - is much darker than the team shirt.
  25. No it bloody well isn't hilarious. All I can think about is that Scotland's co-efficient will be seriously damaged, meaning that we'll be back to one team only for the Champions League, and then only after a qualifying round. Also, they don't have europe to distract them now and I can't see them driopping points to the likes of St. Mirren. Tonight is the night we lost the league - and it may be years before we have a European run like last year.
