I disagree - I think Scott Brown is the most over-hyped player in the SPL (not that I have any time for the treacherous McGreedy); sure, he can go box-to-box, as they like to say nowadays, but his goal return is worse than poor for an attacking midfielder, and how many times does he give the ball away under no pressure? We had a lucky escape not buying him and we definitely got the better bargain in Thomson.

The Media, Gersnet and the Peloponnesian wars
alexscottislegend replied to bmck's topic in Rangers Chat
Think we should keep that bmck article somewhere where we can easily access it. It' s a pleasure to read and so much more original than those rants and cliches turned out by so -called professionals. Actually I never read the newspapers now; there is much more erudition showed by gersnet contributors - though I don't like the bad language. And I too have started to feel like Norris that I'm not really interested in football, just Rangers. Why is that? Partly nostalgia I guess - memories of being lifted up by my uncle to watch Henderson, McMillan, Millar, Brand and Wilson. The 2-3-5, WM formation, if you like. -
McCulloch's goal - it wasn't just the strike, it was the way he won the ball, then spun and composed himself before shooting. If he keeps playing like that I for one will have to eat my words about him. When Mendes and Thommo are fully fit, it will be a tough call for that central MF spot.

I've not heard that expression since my old man used it. You are not follically challenged by any chance.

Nicolas Aneka - I was dick slapped!

Where the hell did you get that? -
I've defended GB till now. He has to go so we can start to build for Euro 2014. Who comes in? Only Souness would command the respect needed. Pity he sometimes rubs some people up the wrong way, but maybe he's mellowed. Anyway, just don't believe GB has anything left to offer now.

Nice to see a bear supporting Scotland. And I like your team. But can't understand Alexander pushing Marshall's case. I will worry every time a cross comes in if it is Marshall. Plus Alexa. has show he has the right temperament for the big games.
-
I think that team might be useful for, say, CIS cup ties. Couple of points though: Isn't Lennon more of a central striker? He wasn't too impressive on loan to P. Thistle. And I think you didn't include Naismith because you assume he's now an established first teamer.
-
Only thing I would add is that in some of these friendlies the EPL featured their squad players rather than first choices. After all, we are not likely to forget that Rangers were not at full strength v. Portsmouth. In reply to Calscot, I was wondering the same thing about say Falkirk v. Vaduz - think you have a good theory there as to why they all crumble in Europe.
-
Is that true? What do we need to get into Pot 2 for sure? Don't we need C****c to beat the Arse?
-
I don't really want him as a CB either. It's just that as long as he is at the club, WS will use him somewhere - and I definitely don't think it should be central midfield. And I'm also thinking who could we afford for CB that would be better than McCulloch? Depressing thought I know.
-
The real shock is that McCulloch seems to have re-invented himself. This position seems to tease out the few qualities he does have, but when Edu and Thomson return, I hope he is not still there ahead of them. Maybe, given we need a partner for Boogie and cover for Weir, he could do a job at CB? After all, we can't afford the money it would cost to buy a real CB, certainly not if Lee can do a half-decent job there. Just a thought. In any event, hopefully we've seen the last of him as a left midfielder.

Yeah, Ryan Giggs said only the other day that players are always falling out, so competitive is it at Man U. Sell Fleck and we're finished as a club. But I think it's a non-story; every time there is an 'incident' some journo in Scotland tries to make capital out of it. By the way, Gazza, PLEASE get rid of that avatar! You've made the point about Mowbray, but the flashing affects me like an epileptic:)

Gers kid carpeted for attack on McCoist
alexscottislegend replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
Why oh Why can other clubs successfully groom young talent? Look at Arsenal, a club who can afford to spend big and sometimes do. They have 17 year old (younger than Fleck) Wilshere who seems set to be a first teamer this season. Is it just that we massively over-rate our young players, or is there really something wrong with our coaching? If a 17 year old can make it to EPL first teams, with far, far greater competition than exists at a club like Rangers, then there should be no reason why anybody half-decent should not get a chance with us. Indeed, we should be scouring Europe, giving youngsters a platform and selling them on. It should actually be a selling point to join us. We can argue that if youngsters go to Man U or the Arse. then they could risk being on the bench for a long time. But then again, cream always rises to the top and maybe that's what happened with young Wilshere. -

Sunday Mail also has it. Would explain why he's not featured so much, but the media would just love it if he was punted somewhere else and went on to be a huge star. Let's just make sure that that doesn't happen. My gut feeling is that this has been blown out of proportion for the media's own nefarious ends. -
Will you still be laughing when our low co-efficient means next year we have to negotiate 2 qualifying round because the Tims buggered up?

Thanks chaps.

Anyone know how I can go about getting a ticket for the any of the Emirates games at this late stage? Is there any point in just turning up on the day? Can find sod all on the official website, plus I don't have the patience to search it properly.

Strange coincidence that his death came only days after the 113 year old Henry Allingham.

Reason for Rangers being called the Light Blues
alexscottislegend replied to Big Spliff's topic in Rangers Chat
Right, let's ban it officially from Gersnet.:devil:Anyone suggest a suitable sanction? -
One way to get these involved is to change the system so we don't have to rely on wide players as in a normal 4-4-2. So we have... Alexander Whittaker Boogie Weir/Broadfoot Papac Edu Thomson Davis Mendes Fleck Lafferty I think Benitez had this system - with 2 sitting midfielders - some years ago at Valencia. The only downside for us is that there is no place for Boyd because we know it's not his game to play lone striker. However, there is a sure place for him as a sub (or impact player as they now seem to call them). I think it could be ideal to have Edu and Thomson together as it gives a right-foot, left foot balance, and Davis and Fleck can be given licence to drift about in support of Lafferty. Whether we get enough goals this way it remains to be seen, but I'd like to see this tried, at least in Europe. Aaron could be an alternative for Fleck or Davis, who I would always have in my first X1, despite his detractors. Hell, we could even squeeze Charlie Adam into this system (steady, now!).

alexscottislegend replied to Big Spliff's topic in Rangers Chat
No, it's not a 'zzz' post as far as i'm concerned. In fact, I've heard your story before, and always hated us being called the 'Light Blues.' We are and have always been, Royal Blue. I have an old LP (!!) with John McDonald singing a song called 'Royal Blue!' I swear our colours have got lighter in recent decades. Check out Wija's avatar of D. Cooper - that's what I call Royal blue. I even once bought a Vauxhall Viva just because it was that colour! -
Gerrard cleared of affray.
alexscottislegend replied to alexscottislegend's topic in General Football Chat
Yes, and no...should be the 'English national team'. The English use the term 'England ' international, implying that you don't have to be English to play for it. -
Surprise! Surprise! Famous footballer gets away with yob-like behaviour. Shame on the barman for repeatedly battering his face against Gerrard's fist. Compared to that Duncan Ferguson's crime was much more innocuous, and he got the jail.
