To be fair to all here, there was no way Rangers First was going to be seen as anything other than a challenge to Buy Rangers. But, on here anyway (I don't use other forums), there's been little biting - only one question from Bearger and you've answered them well, TWWC. So it might not be as gloomy as all that...we have to allow for a little tension, surely. It was always going to happen.

I contacted Rangers recently to see if I could arrange an interview with Todd Lumsden ahead of the Albion Rovers game. Been given the rubber ear. Had I known that mods on this forum called Irvine 'Toxic Jack the cunto' I might have saved the effort!!!

We'll have to wait and see. While it may seem like mental divisiveness from an online perspective, the latest scheme sets out to get the ball rolling and build up a head of steam. It certainly aims to buy a size of shareholding which would force the club into taking note of supporter opinion, but it also has as a feature of its business model the ability to thereafter dangle before the club tempting offers, like for talking's sake the funding of a scout in Germany for two years or something. That in itself gives the movement more clout, more exposure, and the ball becomes a snowball, if you see what I mean. So the money can be used for other things but it's hardly things like holidays in St Lucia for office holders or anything like that - it's for ideas which both strengthen the hand of the fan group viz a vis the club's owners, and helps the club itself. Seems fair enough to me. Whether it works or not there's no way of telling, I am suspicious of anything Jim Spence is in favour of given his struggles with reality; but rather than giving up, we owe it to the club we love to at least have one go. After that, I wouldn't blame anyone for walking away - but not without trying.

Well, that's something I'll try to address, maybe. As I said before, though, I don't want to say any more on the subject, so I'll leave it at that.

1 - No, not liking bigots does not make one a bigot. That's an occasionally advanced argument by some observers of the scene to try to hide their own bigotry. But it's intellectually empty and only dimwits agree with an argument which sees anti-fascists as fascists, staunch Catholics as Protestants and salt as pepper. If that's you fine, if not also fine. Not my problem either way. 2 - I dare say some female RC politicians are committed to their church. Seems daft to me, given the way they are treated by it, but: their choice. Should they try to enforce that religious view on their constituents, I don't think they'd advance far in Scots politics: extremists are not really successful here. Tommy Sheridan, George Galloway, even Rosanna Cunningham slit her political wrists by mentioning Republicanism; but possibly the view is better from where you are. Again, not my worry. 3 - No, disinterest in other peoples' religion doesn't lead to apathy. Candidates are judged on their abilities not their faith: long may it continue. 4 - Your question itself was embarrassing to Rangers and their fans in general. I'm not even going to address it again since it demeans me to do so. Feel free to carry on with this but I have better things to do. Someone else can get their hands dirty. -

A certain journalist who finds murder 'complicated' must gnash his teeth when he reads imagination and perception like this. I sooooooo enjoyed reading that. Even by your own high standards that is superb. Well done!

I think it's inaccurate to put the detestation of Rangers, as seen in our implosion, down to bigotry. There are plenty of people who absolutely hate to their marrow our club because of our fans and their repertoire, mainly of years gone by it's true but the enmity remains. It doesn't make you a bigot to have no time for people you consider bigots - it doesn't make me a bigot to object to the CoS's stance on equal marriage laws, for example. Irish/Catholics in politics, certainly there are plenty but the drive is slacking and has been taken up in recent years by women, who were of course discriminated against heavily in that very community until they/their families moved to Scotland. That's something to be proud of, not freak out over. It's not voter apathy which sees Catholics elected, it's voter disinterest in their religion. Again, not something to fret over but a positive. Whoever is most powerful in Scottish football will run the show: it's the same reason why Puerto Rico hangs on the US's coat tails. You don't have to look further than that for explanations over the state of the game. But even if you were right (which you're not) and Scotland was chock full of football clubs owned by Irish Catholics - would that not make it a bit dumb of us to make a point of putting the boot into said community? -

I'm happy to do so. When the political franchise was extended in this country, horribly late but at last, the first people to challenge the accepted right of landowners and military types to stand for election were people from mining communities and those of Highland extraction who had moved south to find a better life, folk like John MacLean or Robert Robertson. The next group included people of Ashkenazic heritage, chaps like Manny Shinwell, who had moved to Britain in search of a better life. The next group featured people of Irish origin, your Pat Lally's and the like. Most were the children of people who had moved to Britain in search of a better life. They were followed by representatives of the post-war Asian influx. Nowadays, you find a decreasing cadre of politically minded people from such backgrounds (though not Asians, suggesting that they are struggling, broadly, to escape the 'ghetto') because they have become comfortably middle class. Instead, you find a new kind of activist, the Patrick Harvie type. They believe in single issue politics to make a better life etc. This is hardly unusual or specific to Scotland; it's the story of immigrant communities the world over. Coming from (I assume) north America it can hardly be unfamiliar to you. If people who support celtc are in positions of power in Scottish football, I suggest we look at the moonscape that has been and is our boardroom and perhaps point the finger of blame for that more at ourselves than anyone else. -

That's just not been my experience in my life here in the West of Scotland. 'They' tend to want the same things 'we' do - a nice house, nice car, holidays and so on. Added to which is the inconvenient presence of a shit load of celtc fans who aren't either Catholic or Irish...where do they fit in to the evil East End plan for domination of this bedrizzl'd land? It's fantasy, man, fantasy. -

I missed this earlier on, Hildy, but I must take issue. I'm not in any danger of being arrested for a sectarian offence anywhere near a football ground because I don't take religion into Ibrox with me; and I wouldn't get arrested elsewhere talking about it because I prefer to dismantle theological arguments by intellect rather than shouting insults. Luckily, in a secular country, you can do that without being burned at the stake. If we really are in more danger of being arrested at Ibrox for sectarian issues, that's a pretty damning indictment of us as fans. I can see the problems with the bill, I supported it and have watched dismayed as it is implemented in a most haphazard manner, but even if it is the worst piece of legislation in the history of the world EVER that's no excuse for dragging religion through the turnstiles. On the RC Church and Scotland's legislation, the local minister in my Mum's church fought tooth and nail against the normalisation of marriage laws. She also fought and continues to fight against the ordination of gay clergy in the CoS. Ironically, it was only about a decade earlier that she, as a female, was considered good enough to preach The Word. Sauce for the goose...it's certainly not just Rome which has issues with equality, although I suspect the amount of people of that faith in the media gives them a platform far above their relevance...which, again ironically, is what they frequently accuse groups such as Stonewall Scotland of doing. Finally from me, I fail to see why a political party seeking to avoid pissing off potential voters is even comment worthy. It's a charge we could lay at the feet of every party on every issue...that's how politics works. Highlighting the SNP & religious education as if it's some kind of shock is a bit disingenuous. -

Well, fair enough, but I still think we're secular. I mean, if churches had their way (all of them, btw) equality legislation wouldn't have been passed, divorce would be nigh on impossible, likewise abortion, and so on. If you want to avoid religion you can do so pretty easily, and that sounds like a secular state to me. -
Fair enough points. My spirits are in my boots today (Spiers is the last straw, again) and so it's only fair that those with oomph take their chance before worn out old records, moaning on and on. I wish you luck.

They fought to destroy the greatest evil Europe has ever inflicted on the world, and God knows it has inflicted a few! To boil that down to 'they fought for all of Great Britain' is accurate as far as it goes, but it only shows a tiny part of a huge picture, and furthermore is most certainly adopting their fight for your own political belief. I think I'll refrain from further comment since squabbling over other peoples' loss is in the poorest possible taste. I don't necessarily disagree, but it is fair to point out that for a few of our more strident voices, the team on the pitch is some way down the list of priorities. This poses another danger, since it will alienate non-baggaged fans, make corporate investment less likely and less sizeable (Blackthorn! We should have Ford or someone equally large on our shirts), and continue our chronically poor public relations disaster, thus ensuring the continuance of the first two items, entrenching the third and so on and so on until we're playing before the type of crowds I Used to see in the mid-80's, with about as much success. Now, it's as likely that this won't happen as it will, but I don't see any reason not to raise the issue, unless we're just going to breenge on with the LUMP mentality and to hell with the rest of the world. Onwards to the Ghetto! Timothy is already there, we should copy them!! No for me, thanks.

Wow. This thread has gone nuts. Who the Dickens is 'we'? Protestants? And that covers 'us', does it, since we all march off to church of a Sunday, do we? And 'we' 'have it', presumably power, do we? This is a secular country, where religion is dying a quick and long overdue death. It's only stuff like these generalisations which keep its weak heartbeat going, desperate links to Rangers and celtc which administer the defibrillator of life to it. 'We' don't have anything, and neither do 'they'. -
My best friend's father fought in and was held captive in the war. He was also a lifelong Nationalist. Asinine appropriations of other peoples' sacrifice to serve today's politics is just pitiful, regardless of which side is doing the appropriating.
