Long before Dawson, common on radio comedy shows when I was a young lad late 1940s, early 50s but according to wikipedia the origin is: ”The term, or its variant "as the actress said to the bishop", is British in origin. It supposedly originated from a conversation between the actress Lillie Langtry and the Bishop of Worcester. They were at a country house weekend party and on Sunday morning before church, they went for a stroll in the garden. On their walk, the bishop cut his finger on a rose thorn. Over lunch, Lillie enquired about his injury, asking: "How is your prick?" To which the bishop replied: "Throbbing," causing the butler to drop the potatoes.” I hope that’s true.4 points

After seeing the level of opposition in this thread I will amend my position. I am now pretending to have backed him from the start. Oh Barry, Barry, ...4 points

Why is it our players have to run a gauntlet of abuse every time they play at that dump ? The media the politicians and the SFA and the corrupt police say and do absolutely nothing about it every time. Most of the outlets have the catastrophic disaster of the filth finally getting a wash in their headlines. If none of them or our board are doing zilch we should drop them off at the Broomloan roundabout and make them do the same walk.3 points

Vettriano was born in Methil. The year before, my late uncle earned East Fife the biggest transfer fee received by a Scottish club up until that date, 26,000 sterling, in 1950. He went South to play in the same forward line as Stanley Mathews and Stan Mortensen. Bringing it back to Rangers. That same year, my uncle played for East Fife (manager: Scot Symon) in the Scottish Cup Final and as a forward, came up against the Iron Curtain. The likes of George Young, Tiger Shaw and Willie Woodburn. Predictably, Rangers (manager: Bill Struth), kept a clean sheet and won the Cup.3 points

I believe he is the 49's group football technical lead, and for any new club they take over moving forward will be placed at a club in a senior DOF type role for a year or so to lay the foundations then move on the the next 49's venture.3 points

I did enjoy their whining yesterday, we're constantly hearing pundits talk about their strength in depth, the bench etc. Pumped at home - 'but mcgregor wisnae playin' Btw, the same mcgregor that we've dominated in the last few games. Up ye.3 points

I have argued before that I think we have a decent core of young players with which to build. This summer needs to see the acquisition of first-team quality players to supplement our core.3 points

I know this will get shot down, but our best 11 beats their best 11 all day long right now. Our problem is that our best 11 is literally all we have, whereas they have a good core of 16 or more that have an argument about being in the best 11. We need a few more that challenge our 11. But more importantly, we need to beat the rest of the shite. Beating the filth is nice, but I’d accept the occasional slip up against them for more shiny things.3 points

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, that is brilliant. For the sake of completeness, though, you should have mentioned his Scotland caps, fourteen and goals, six. Not a lot of caps compared to modern times but international matches were fewer, the talent pool was much larger and the selectors used to dole caps out to chaps they thought deserved a chance. Dundonian Jackie Mudie was a contemporary but with a place on the pantheon of Blackpool divinity a bit lower than Matthews and Mortensen2 points

As much as I admire what Barry and his team have done I don't think we can afford to take such a chance with our next appointment after so many faiures. I would be very happy with him as assistant manager. We do need a strong Scottsh presence in and around the team.2 points

Strong connections on the right - over the last few games it has been the left that had the stronger connections with Jefte a major hub. It would be interesting to see Tavernier and Jefte play as WBs. Sterling again showing up well. Tavernier looks quite impressive, finding / found by Raskin and Diomande a lot. Cerny and Dessers a little isolated. I liked Ridvan's positioning, but he was a little isolated, too. I wonder if Celtic allowed the pass from Butland to Balogun? Balogun isn't great on the ball, yet is clearly the outlet for Butland.2 points

Glad that my post kicked him back into action 😁 He's been poor for a few months but has been played out of position. BF said as much post-match. Kid has talent but also has a lot to learn.2 points

I mentioned this about being outnumbered in midfield so often 3 on 2 before the game, it was glaringly obvious it was the downfall in defeats. And when I saw their kind of unfamiliar line up I felt we had a chance - and was going to state no Kyogo is another factor. Last 3 matches against them has an aggregate of Rangers 9-5 Celtic, so perhaps a slight tilt now in our favour - its against the rest of the league where we have lost it.2 points

BF has done his prospects no harm whatsoever in getting the job full time. A Rangers manager needs to beat the yahoos home and away. Only Gerrard did that in recent times Interestingly that’s the third game in a row weve scored 3 goals against them. Can’t remember when that last happened. BF has made changes to the team which has brought better results. We’re no longer getting outnumbered middle of the park with just 2 MF players. And the return of Souttar has helped last few games. Let’s hope he can stay injury free. Be interesting to see how they react to that defeat today. They recruited a lot last summer paying big fees for some players. Rumours of discontent about some players unhappy at the salaries the new signings were getting. Kyogo one of them who left. He was a menace in these games. Glad he’s gone. Hopefully maeda and hatate follow him out the door in the summer. 😎2 points

Don Kichenbrand (1933-2025) | Rangers Football Club EVERYONE at Rangers is saddened to have learned of the passing of former player, Don Kichenbrand, at the age of 91. Don, known as ‘The Rhino’; was the oldest living Ranger and scored 24 goals in 25 league appearances as the Light Blues won the title under Scot Symon in season 1955-56. In all, he featured 37 times for Rangers. He also played for several clubs in South Africa, as well as Sunderland, Forfar Athletic and Keith in the UK. The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with Don’s family and friends at this difficult time.1 point

The best way to respond? Exactly what we did yesterday. Stand up to them on the pitch, beat them then rub their noses in it. Said when BF was appointed if all he done in his short spell was to instill passion and a contempt for them then it was a good appointment. Given what happened yesterday, he's on the right course.1 point

Would the butler be serving the potatoes or would it be some poor soul lower down the hierarchy of domestic servants?1 point

Pretty much my thinking. Does he have the tactical acumen for the job? Probably not. What he does have is the ability (seemingly) to get the team geed up and ready to go, instill a bit of the "Ranger's spirit". That can be done as an assistant. If he can learn from an experienced manager, he might be an option i the future, but if not we at least get some of the passion from him in the meantime. There's an argument that with the EL progression and the result yesterday, he's earned the right to have a shot. If we don't think he's ready for the big job (and I don't think he is) then AM seems a possibility.1 point

I think @Blue Moon’s answer is the correct one but it may also be that Scotsmen are more self confident than a certain type of Irishman and don’t feel the need for flamboyant demonstration of identity. Or maybe we just can’t be bothered.1 point

Not sure he's what we're looking for short-medium term but as a long term prospect, perhaps? I don't see it happening but how about Barry as assistant to a more experienced, proven manager to hone his craft and moulded to take over as the long term appointment. Some sort of succession planning. Difficulty here is it would need Barry to accept a step backwards from manager to assistant (although that might not be impossible to see happen), it would also need the incoming manager to buy into the idea of the previous manager staying around....1 point

There is a hierarchy and we are some way from the top. Your suggestion, if implemented, would just be turned against the club.1 point

Just love Raskin. What a player. Showing how much his injuries impacted us the past couple of years.1 point

Raskin was awesome and gets my vote. An honourable mention for Big Cyriel who kept their defence busy without getting many passes.1 point

There is no patience out there, to allow a manager to develop talent in the first team. They don't develop sat on the bench.1 point

A few candidates for me, Souttar, Dio and Ridvan did well. Butland's kicking was so poor that I couldn't give it to him, but the saves, especially the one from Hatate were superb. The only Belgian international on the pitch gets it from me though1 point

I think the answer to that needs to be overlayed with the clubs longer term plans. If FFP or just general finances means we’re going to have a few lean years then we do need someone who can just fire up a dressing room and there was little doubt that as skipper, he did that. If however the club has a broader plan that involves an element of player investment, then we need someone who can lead that as that would not be something you’d want an inexperienced manager leading. But one thing is for sure, wee Barry should have a role on the coaching team going forward.1 point
-
Unless we win the Europa and every game to seasons end, No. But I could maybe see him staying on as a something akin to a motivation coach for the next manager.1 point
-
Have to admit to underestimating BF. I said we'd scud Motherwell then suffer against Fenerbache and Celtic. Couldn't have got it more wrong. Credit to him for putting together a coaching team that have got results in big games. That said, I wouldn't want him as 'permanent' manager. Although with everything up in air at the moment, its difficult to know in what direction the club will go.1 point
