We need to ignore the possible offside that was never actually tested. The only reference to offside in that incident was as a subsequent determination that played absolutely no part in the denial of a penalty. The issue here is that the referee either failed to notice the handball or chose not to act on it .... then that VAR either failed to see that a handball offence had occurred or did notice it but decided the handball didn't amount to a punishable offence. These are the ONLY issues that should be debated and only the audio conversation between VAR and the referee will clarify what happened and who played what part. The fact a bye kick was awarded following the decision not to award a penalty makes it clear that both VAR and the referee both decided the ball did not come off the defender's hand or body ... again, that is the ONLY conclusion. The upshot is that VAR, having the luxury of examining the video footage, did one of two things ..... it either made a complete hash of interpreting the video or it deliberately ignored the evidence to hand. The subsequent and rather dubious business of the possible offside is utterly irrelevant to whether or not there was either gross incompetence or deliberate corruption at play.6 points

I haven't changed the narrative, the VAR team did that by showing the "offside" still and saying that was the reason the penalty was not given. I said above, if they had NOT released the still, this would have all blown over. Now, they've changed the narrative, tried to cover incompetent referring (or cheating) and mudded the water. The rules clearly state that offside doesn't come into the equation when debating / deciding if it was a penalty, so why did the VAR team go down this road? I also said earlier this is now about the process (cheating) rather than penalties and offsides. The VAR team caused this and it needs to be investigated and if any underhanded behaviour is proven, then they need to be removed.4 points

Let's ignore the IFAB rules because they're quoted by a journalist? 😂 I'm not sure of the relevance that it was accidental.4 points

This time it's a little different. In the great debate between incompetence or cheating, incompetence has been removed from the list of options. I've seen many previous examples over the years that have hinted at institutional cheating in Scottish football. In this case however, no persuasion is necessary and the sordid conspiracy has been laid bare for all to see. It will of course be covered up and buried.4 points

The players have to pick themselves up and forget Saturday's game there's a league out there were capable of winning.4 points

The offside issue is pure distraction. The issue here isn't whether Rangers were denied a possible goal but the manner in which a critical decision was taken by officials who came to a decision by all the wrong means and subsequently covered up their 'crime'. Whether or not a penalty kick would subsequently have been over-ruled, the real issue is the non-award of a valid penalty with no reference to any offside issue and the award of a bye kick rather than a free kick for offside. It's clear from this that offside was never considered in the decision not to award a penalty, despite clear video evidence of a hand ball offence. Offside only became an issue after the event and is a purely hypothetical consideration.3 points

The still that was shown clearly shows the ball is in motion. They published that for one reason and one reason only. Its all part of the lies and cover-up IMO.3 points

One last game before the break. One last push. We need to shake the hangover from Saturday out of our system quickly. 3 pts is non negotiable but Kiĺlie will be a tough nut to crack. I'd go with the same team that started against them with maybe Dowell coming in for Lunny (who didn't look fit IMO) and Wright for McCausland. I know everyone will want Silva starting but I think Clement will not play him based on his previous comments regarding players fitness etc. That leaves us with Dessers. As much as he was awful on Saturday we need to support this guy if he plays. Stay classy my fellow Rangers fans. He's not the answer but he's got to feature therefore we can't start turning in on ourselves. That's exactly what THEY will hope to happen.2 points

Nope, it was VAR that released the still and confirmed to SKY that it was offside, hence no penalty. However, the rules state that a penalty can't be disallowed due to offside. The VAR team have created this miss nd we need to know why. It's either to cover up incompetent decisions or cheating.2 points
-
FFS. Do not only did he not know the IFAB interpretation, he's making things up 🙄2 points

Did the SPFL not release the still to Sky? The cheating is the VAR. It was handball and surely nobody is denying that. The ref apparently didn't see it, hence the bye kick. VAR should therefore highlight that there was a handball and allow the ref to decide on whether it's a penalty. Surely it's the ref that should make that decision?2 points

But we don't know if it was offside. The image shared clearly shows the ball is in motion, so shouldn't have been used. It also took 30mins for this still to be shared - why did it take 30mins to get a still that showed "offside". The image should have been shared instantly. Anyway, we are now beyond pen or no pen, offside or onside, it's bow about the process, the lies and the cover up.2 points

Haven't read all posts since the game, but came across this article regarding the offside that never was. I do remember that at least one more offside that was given against us in their area with McGregor heading the ball clear and Goldson was flagged offside - but never should have. Rangers penalty controversy takes new twist as IFAB ruling emerges Stewart Wilson Sun, 31 December 2023 at 4:26 pm CET The Rangers penalty controversy during the recent derby against Celtic at Parkhead has taken a new twist after an IFAB ruling on the scenario has emerged. An incident in the first half was highlighted as Willie Collum did not feel that referee Nick Walsh had made a clear and obvious error by failing to award the Ibrox side a penalty following a handball by Hoops defender Alistair Johnston. Collum believed that Walsh had been correct just to give a goal kick because he felt the Celtic player's hand was in a natural position when it made contact with the ball after watching a replay back at Clydesdale House. Television footage later showed that Rangers forward Abdallah Sima had been in an offside position when John Lundstram played the ball in to him. But Walsh did not indicate that was the reason why the penalty was disallowed at the time and the goal kick was then taken by Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart. And now a ruling has emerged which appears to suggest that Sima would not have been offside in this particular scenario. The IFAB rules outline that for the scenario of when attacking player in an offside position (Team A) runs towards the ball but does not play the ball or prevent the opponent (Team B) from playing or being able to play the ball, the referees decision should be that : "It is not an offside offence so the referee allows play to continue. The attacking player is only penalised if he/she plays the ball or interferes with an opponent." Ibrox boss Philippe Clement made his feelings clear at full time. Speaking to BBC, he said: "I'm also really curious why this handball wasn't given because it's a really decisive moment in the game to come back to 1-1. I'm really curious about that. "It's a clear handball so it's a penalty and I think everybody who sees that clear handball will say it's a penalty." When the BBC reporter then suggested that the VAR pictures showed an offside prior to the flashpoint. Clement responded: "Yes, but after the game. In the second half. We never got this information in the first half so that was not in account at that moment. "So it's strange we didn't get this information that there was an offside and that there was no clear signal that it was offside. "It's not an offside situation given with the ball there in the position which he was offside. "So it's an explanation afterwards to cover a decision that was wrong." https://uk.news.yahoo.com/rangers-penalty-controversy-takes-twist-152600257.html?guccounter=12 points

Now, January started with a few "bombshells" ... or let's call them "media brain-f...ts" Rangers are said to be in talks with Hellas Verona over a deal to bring left-back Josh Doig back to Scotland in January, according to Toro Goal. It is said that any deal would cost up to £5.2million with Italian intermediaries working to get the defender a move in the next 31 days, with fresh talks starting with Torino. While we also look to get Sima in on a permanent basis, with said media citing 10-15m valuations. Fabio Carvalho (Liverpool) might be a target for a January loan say others, after being recalled from RB Leipzig.2 points

He never gave offside! he never gave a pen! he never gave a corner!. Also their player was allowed play on with a blood spattered face!. There was so many things the ref got wrong it has to be one of the worst performances from a ref ever!. We were still poor to allow them to press us.2 points
-
That's fine tbh if that's the case but the regardless of the whether it's a pen the process stinks and is a culmination of the culture of pressure they have cultivated for decades. I never bought into it before after the last few seasons, I'm sold. The turning point was the 21/22 season when Dundee were denied a stonewall penalty at Celtic Park (Jota uses his hand in unnatural position) in a tight match and then we were denied a stonewall pen in the same weekend up at Tannidice when Sakala was hauled back in the act of shooting. Nothing given. Then there was the Johnson non foul on Morelos and the disallowed goal in the 1-0 defeat at Ibrox this season.2 points

Would it have though as it looks like it took 30mins to show us the offside decision.2 points
-
Dermot Gallagher on Ref Watch suggests it should have been a penalty, which the VAR checked. Rightly or wrongly, VAR decided against. If VAR had given the penalty, then they would then have to check the offside, which then would have cancelled the penalty. No penalty is the right decision.2 points

Doubt it. It will be Dessers and as much as we are hurting, I fear the boo boys will be out tomorrow. He's not the answer by a long way but at the moment he's our only answer. Hopefully he's good enough to help us get over the line vs Killie.1 point

Neither you nor I can say it was accidental unless we have special powers to read the mind of the defender. In any case, no one can be partly accidental. It's either wholly accidental or it's deliberate.1 point

What you seem to be saying is that the decision to award a penalty for handball is purely subjective and down to the whim of the officials, irrespective of video evidence. That would certainly seem to have been the case on Saturday right enough. I'd call that cheating.1 point

We will never know if it was offside or not as the still that was shown was not the correct image that should have been used , however at the end of the day we should have done better . Given how poor we are upfront in the main striking dept , its a miracle imho that IF we win our games in hand we will only be 2 behind , PC has worked wonders with a squad that cant finish chances are are down to the bare bones in midfield .1 point

But the rules state offside is irrelevant, if he is even offside. If he was clearly offside, why did it take over half an hour for this line to be trotted out and a dubious still to be shown? The narrative is moved on from "no penalty" to " no penalty as he's offside". If VAR had NOT released the still and the offside narrative, this would have blown over, but by changing the narrative they have dug a hole for themselves that they'll struggle to get out off.1 point
-
The offside didn't matter because they decided it wasn't a penalty, rightly or wrongly. Only if the penalty was given would they then check the build-up, which would have ruled it out because it was offside.1 point
-
This doesn't have anything to do with what's happens in the stadium IMO. It a symptom of what's gone on beyond the game. Refs getting windows smashed and abused in public, Celtic fans hiring Private Investigators to follow refs, Celtic FC asking particular refs to relieved of their duties. No wonder refs are intimated.1 point

Have we seen an actual still frame of when the ball is played forward in the Sima penalty incident. I've seen a pic with lines but I've also listened to several pod casts disputing the validity of the pic as it taken after the ball is struck. We need evidence as this whole situation stinks. I've also read many comments supporting the ref, stating that he couldn't see what happened. Has anyone actually looked at his position. He's about 10 foot away and looking directly at the incident.1 point

By not releasing the audio, the SFA are admitting what we all know. I don't know what more the club can do. Maybe worth releasing a statement claiming we've been cheated, await a summons for brining the game into disrepute then ask the SFA to prove that we're lying? Either way, we know, they know and now everyone knows we've been shafted / cheated.1 point
