Big game in more ways than one. Improvement We have to show the right attitude and some determination, as well as concentration and organisation when defending. If we don't, we'll get humped,.... it would also suggest that for whatever reason, Gio isn't getting through to the players and ramp up the pressure on him. Point(s) To have any chance of not finishing bottom of the group we need to beat Napoli. If we are objective about this, then we are finishing bottom of what has turned out to be our most difficult ever CL Group of the eleven we have been in. Unfortunately, it co-incides with our squad generally going stale, injuries and summer recruitment not giving much short term benefit. Finance A win would see the evening's revenue figure, from the gate and hospitality, approximately double. Even a draw would bring in a hefty wedge. Players There have been so many players off it recently, that there hasn't really been a negative focus on individuals. Attention tonight will be on McGregor and Morelos (if he starts). Not had a lot of gametime, asking a lot of them to make an impression at this level. Napoli 7 CL Group stage matches undefeated (Ajax were at 7 before last night) Not beaten in any game since April 24th (League/Empoli, A) Have only won 1 CL away match in their last 10, (Salzburg) They have played only one Scottish side in a competitive match, Hibs (1967), managed by Bob Shankly. The Italians won the first leg in Naples, 4-1 (same score as against Liverpool last week). Scottish sides had never previously beat Italian opposition over two legs in 7 attempts, it looked all over..... ......but in the second leg, Hibs opened the scoring after only 5 minutes past a young Dino Zoff, who would go on to pick the ball out of the net on four more occasions. Hibs went through 6-4. So, when Napoli win at home 4-1 and travel to Scotland for their next match,........😀3 points

I remember years ago getting the call that my wife's grandmother was ready to pass on to the other side and the whole family rushed up to the nursing home. It was a false alarm. This happened 4 or 5 times until the inevitable eventually happened. With every game that passes I feel the same about gio. It is only a matter of time till its his turn to go. He ain't cutting it.2 points

As I said before, send Ridvan and Borna out on the left flank and lets see what happens. For the love of the game I cannot understand why Kent in this mode is kept on the field week after week.2 points

At this rate if his performances continue like this he’ll end up back at Dundee2 points

I’d go as far to say if it wasn’t for the tribal/religious/cultural ties for fans in Scotland to Rangers and them then many fans would have an EPL team to back and the SPFL would basically be another Irish league by now.2 points

I can’t remember being less interested in a Rangers European tie. Just not up for this one at all. Worrying.2 points

used to be 5 cities was the piece of trivia. Milan, Madrid, Belgrade, Glasgow and the one that caught everyone out Dundee. A few cities have joined the list.2 points

@JohnMcand @Scott7... Belgrade. Partizan made the final in '66 and Crvena Zvezda won it in 1991. Ignore me, I now notice you were looking at countries with two cities with two semi-finalists.2 points

The owner of the Phoenix Suns looks like just the kind of guy we'd want owning the club... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/basketball/62899194 The Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver has been suspended for a year and fined $10m after an NBA investigation into claims of racism and misogyny. The NBA found Sarver "engaged in conduct that clearly violated common workplace standards". It found evidence of "racially insensitive language, unequal treatment of female employees and sex-related statements and conduct".2 points

A stat following on from above post. Younger readers will be amazed to read that BOTH Dundee clubs have not only played in the European Cup (once each). Sit down, but have BOTH reached the semi final of said European Cup. BOTH beaten by Italians (AC Milan & Roma) We got to one old EC semi-final in about 13 attempts (Eintracht, 1960). Not good enough. So does that mean Scotland have more cities than England that have two clubs who reached a EC semi-final ? Glasgow, Dundee London2 points

I don’t think it was a shocking display, I think it was most likely reffed pretty well, just that we had some misfortune really.1 point

Not long in from game all I can say is bring back Scottish referees an absolutely shocking display. Thought the team played well and believe we would have got at least a point till the referee capitulated.1 point

The players who came on showed no grit or desire the fight in the team actually dropped when they came on considering they had fresh legs they are useful when we are 3 nil up against the likes of Ross county but way out of their depth at this level, Tillman and Matondo lose The ball to often to be playing in these games for us The team in first half and up to the sending off showed fight and it was a decent performance not outstanding but they did the basics at this level which all you ask so all in all shit result good fight up till sending off and recruitment needs to take a hard look at the level of players they are responsible for bringing in.1 point

They did benefit. They got another pot at goal despite it being their player who infringed.1 point

Weird way to make a point after saying he was happy with the transfer dealings.1 point

Holy shit, that team selection. Is that the state of the squad? Jesus. It feels like a team from the last decade. It probably is that actually.1 point

If that lineup doesn’t scream ‘Our transfer business in the summer was poor’ then I don’t know what does.1 point

All stitched up, agreed. But I won't be taking the option of tuning into the big leagues but I guess I'm in the age bracket that they ain't very concerned about.1 point

No, @JohnMc is right. Had it only been the European Cup era, London wouldn't have been included as only Spurs had reached a EC semi-final. I missed the most obvious of the lot in Manchester 👎 Need to get the man who really knows about European football on the case in the future @Fat Eck1 point

Agree, perhaps history is repeating and the board gave him the same line Gerrard got before he got unhappy and left. If i were a player I'd also be disappointed that having made the Cl and seen some big money departures there were no further reinforcements.1 point

Manchester. Both United and City have made the final. Can't think of many other countries that have 2 cities with 2 semi finalists. Neither Torino nor Lazio have reached the last 4, so just Milan with 2 clubs, Espanyol haven't so just Madrid in Spain, Boavista haven't so just Lisbon from Portugal. Can't think what German cities have 2 strong sides, Berlin certainly hasn't had 2 semi finalists and 1860 Munich haven't reached the semi final.1 point

I did a business deal with him during his 3i days and didn't have any issues. I'd known him for a few years before that too and always found him to be good guy, and was surprised at his involvement here. I guess different people have different perceptions.1 point

Goalscorers that night Duncan, Quinn, Cormack, Stanton and Colin Stein. Stein had scored their solitary goal in Italy. He would also score their only goal in a 2-1 aggregate defeat to an excellent Leeds team. Leeds would then knock us out in the Quarters, 2-0 agg. Dundee in the semi's, 2-1 agg. Before lifting the Inter Cities Fairs Cup against Ferencvaros. Not much in the way of air miles for Leeds to win that trophy.1 point

Hibs had Pat Stanton, Peter Cormack and a fellow, Colin Stein, playing for them that night. Also Father Pat Quinn and Alex Scott’s brother Jim. @compowill remember them well.1 point

History has taught us, by the time we find out its usually too late. No one is coming out of this well. This seems to be a bit of a public spat between majority shareholders being played out to the detriment of the club. One wonders why the clubs journey seems to have stalled all of a sudden post PSV. I wouldn't say the board have taken thier foot off the gas, I'd say they have stopped paying for gas and the car isn't going to get very far any time soon. Dave King seems desperate to sell his shares. Normally I'd ask why? Shares are an investment. He or his estate could hold onto these shares for some time and make a great profit selling them much later in the future. Does King know something that makes him so desperate to sell? Paul Murray seems to be a bit of a never has been. A fairly successful city guy, never really had the financial means to get a seat at the top table but always wants to be there or there abouts. Is it telling he has sided with King and is facilitating his selling of shares? How will that help his aims in getting involved with the club? Perhaps he will try to represent the buyer on the board. It seems this current wealthy fan ownership, call them white knights, call them the 3(or 7, or 8 or 9 etc) bears have hit a common problem. Running a business by committee isn't always successful when everyone has different ideas. But then look where it got us being ran by an egotistical individual. Who knows where we go from here.1 point

Having read this whole thread I think most of the Bluenoses who have the contributed to it have made fair assumptions regarding Gio’s statements. But as we are not in the know concerning his contract, and the possibility of a non disclosure in it, we don’t know if he is free to speak his mind, so they are only assumptions. Thanks to the European success we know Gio is no fool tactically. Is he responsible for the lack of form/effort from the majority of players, or are they inconsistent players. As we have seen their form/effort go up and down before Gio came in I will assume the players are just inconsistent. I support Gio as he is our manager, and I don’t see that changing soon. Changing managers & coaching staff again would only set us back. Imo we are far off being anywhere near the standard of my favourite Gers team, and much more hard work is needed.1 point

As well as we being on UEFA's "watch list" for sailing very close to the wind in terms of FFP (or whatever they're calling it now), its prudent for the Board to be wary of inflation and its unknown impact on our short term cost base. Other financial unknowns (at least to us) are the particulars of the settlement with Ashley, the capital needed for New Edmiston House, any new/significant maintenance costs for Ibrox and Auchenhowie, new contracts for senior players, amortisation of previous transfers as well as previous losses which we have racked up... and thats before you get to the shitshow that is the SPFL's TV deal renegotiations which continue to hold us back financially and will do so over an even longer period if they gerrymander it through. Despite all of that, I was disappointed we didn't manage to make at least one more signing before the deadline. My gut feel was there should have been scope for it, but I guess we will need to see what the accounts say to get a clearer picture. We seem to continually shoot ourselves in the foot from a communication point of view though. The Board should know we are hyper sensitive on financial matters and read the room by providing more timely information rather than waiting till the pitchforks are drawn.1 point
